Chapter 3 - The Father Who Was Never Gone

The elevator doors opened.

Mallory stopped breathing.

A man stood inside.

Older than the memory she carried.

Thinner.

His hair was almost completely gray.

But she knew his eyes.

She had spent twelve years trying to forget them.

"Dad..."

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Nobody moved.

Not Adrian.

Not Richard.

Not the security guards.

Not even Daniel.

The man stepped out of the elevator slowly.

His eyes were fixed only on Mallory.

For a moment, the entire world disappeared.

She was no longer inside a luxury hotel surrounded by billionaires and secrets.

She was twelve years old again.

Standing in the doorway of her childhood home.

Watching her father pack a small suitcase.

Hearing him promise he would return.

And then watching him disappear forever.

Except he had not disappeared.

He was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Mallory took one step backward.

"No."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"This isn't possible."

The man looked at her with pain in his eyes.

"I know what you believe."

Mallory shook her head.

"You died."

The man lowered his gaze.

"I needed everyone to believe that."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The older man looked at him.

Then smiled sadly.

"My name is Thomas Reed."

Mallory felt her chest tighten.

Thomas Reed.

Her father.

The same man whose death certificate she had held in her hands.

The same man whose funeral she had attended.

The same man whose absence had shaped her entire life.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"You knew about this?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I knew he was alive."

Mallory turned toward him.

"You knew?"

Her voice cracked.

"You knew my father was alive and you said nothing?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

Nobody answered.

That silence hurt more than any explanation.

Mallory looked back at Thomas.

"What happened?"

Her father took a breath.

"I discovered something I wasn't supposed to find."

Adrian's expression changed.

"The company."

Thomas nodded.

"Your company."

The billionaire became still.

"My company didn't exist twelve years ago."

"Exactly."

Thomas walked closer.

"That's why nobody believed me."

Mallory watched Adrian carefully.

She realized something.

This was not just about her father.

It was connected to him.

To the secrets surrounding him.

To the people sitting around that dinner table.

Richard suddenly spoke.

"This is ridiculous."

Everyone turned.

The lawyer looked annoyed.

"An old man appears after years of being missing, makes accusations, and everyone accepts it?"

Thomas looked at him.

"You haven't changed, Richard."

The lawyer's face hardened.

"You don't know anything about me."

Thomas smiled.

"I know enough."

Adrian looked between them.

"What happened twelve years ago?"

Thomas reached inside his coat.

He removed a small envelope.

The same type of envelope Daniel had brought earlier.

He handed it to Adrian.

"This is why they tried to erase me."

Adrian opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old contracts.

Financial records.

Names.

Lots of names.

Mallory watched his face as he read.

The confusion slowly disappeared.

Then came anger.

"What is this?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"The original ownership structure of Blackwood Technologies."

Adrian looked up.

"I founded that company."

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"You built what they allowed you to build."

Nobody spoke.

Thomas pointed at the documents.

"Before you became the face of the company, there were people controlling everything from behind the scenes."

Adrian looked at Richard.

The lawyer remained silent.

Too silent.

Mallory noticed.

Again.

Every time the truth got close, Richard became quiet.

Thomas continued.

"Your success was never an accident."

Adrian clenched the papers.

"Who controlled it?"

Thomas looked around the room.

Then his eyes stopped on Richard.

"The same person who has been standing beside you all these years."

The room changed.

Mallory felt it.

Everyone knew who he meant.

Richard laughed softly.

"You are making a desperate accusation."

Thomas looked at him.

"Am I?"

He pulled out another photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Adrian picked it up.

His expression changed immediately.

The photograph showed Richard meeting a woman outside an airport.

A woman Mallory did not recognize.

But Adrian did.

"That's impossible."

Thomas watched him.

"You know her."

Adrian looked at the photograph.

"She died."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

A silence followed.

"She disappeared."

Adrian slowly lowered the picture.

"Who is she?"

Thomas looked at him.

"Your mother."

Nobody spoke.

Mallory felt the room spin.

Adrian's mother had died when he was young.

Everyone knew that.

It was one of the few personal details about the billionaire that had ever been public.

But Thomas was saying something impossible.

That she was alive.

Richard suddenly moved toward the door.

Security immediately blocked him.

Adrian looked at him.

"Where are you going?"

Richard stared back.

"You need to understand something."

"What?"

"The truth is not always better than the lie."

Adrian stepped closer.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"The truth is the only thing I want now."

Richard smiled.

A strange, almost sad smile.

"Then you are closer than you think."

Before Adrian could respond, every phone in the room received a notification.

One sound.

At the exact same time.

Mallory looked at her phone.

A message had arrived.

No number.

No name.

Just a video file.

Thomas saw it.

His face changed.

"Don't open that."

Mallory looked at him.

"Why?"

Thomas looked terrified.

"Because whoever sent it wants you to watch it."

Adrian stepped beside her.

"We watch it together."

Mallory pressed play.

The screen showed an old video.

A dark room.

A woman sitting in front of the camera.

Mallory did not know her.

But Adrian immediately froze.

Because he recognized her.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

And spoke.

"If you are watching this, it means Richard failed to stop you."

Adrian's face became pale.

The woman continued.

"My son, if you found this message, you need to know the truth."

Mallory looked at him.

Son.

The woman took a breath.

"I never died."

Adrian stepped backward.

The video continued.

"I was forced to disappear because of what I discovered about the people closest to you."

The screen flickered.

Then the woman's eyes moved toward something off-camera.

Someone was there.

Someone she was afraid of.

Her voice became quieter.

"The person you trust the most is the person who destroyed our family."

The video stopped.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stared at the frozen screen.

Then slowly looked at Richard.

The lawyer's face had lost all emotion.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Thomas whispered:

"Now you understand why I came back."

Mallory looked at her father.

"What happened to my mother?"

Thomas didn't answer.

He looked toward the hotel hallway.

Because someone was walking toward them.

Slow footsteps.

Calm.

Confident.

Someone who was not afraid of security.

The elevator at the end of the hallway opened again.

And a woman's voice called Adrian's name.
