Chapter 6 - The Sister Who Came Back

The message remained on Daniel Carter’s phone screen.

"Your sister is inside the restaurant."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

For seven years, Daniel had imagined this moment.

He imagined Sarah walking through the front doors.

He imagined hearing her voice.

He imagined asking all the questions he had carried for so long.

Why did you leave?

Why didn’t you call?

Why did you let me hate you?

But now that the possibility was real, Daniel felt something different.

Fear.

Because if Sarah was really here, then everything he believed about the past was about to disappear completely.

Emma stepped closer.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"She’s here."

Emma nodded slowly.

"I think she wanted you to know."

Daniel looked toward the restaurant entrance.

The dining room was still busy.

Customers were eating.

Servers were moving between tables.

Nobody knew that seven years of secrets were about to walk into the room.

David stood behind him.

"Before you see her, there’s something you need to understand."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

David looked serious.

"Sarah didn’t disappear because she wanted a new life."

Daniel waited.

"She disappeared because she thought staying close to you would get you killed."

The words hit harder than he expected.

Daniel looked away.

For years, he had blamed his sister.

But now every memory was changing.

Every moment he thought proved she abandoned him was becoming proof that she sacrificed herself.

"Where has she been?"

David looked at Evelyn.

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s voice became louder.

"Where has my sister been?"

Evelyn finally spoke.

"She was hiding."

"From who?"

His mother looked at the floor.

"From the same person who has been watching you."

Daniel felt cold.

"Who?"

Before anyone answered, the restaurant lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The music stopped.

The entire dining room became quiet.

Then the front door opened.

Daniel turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Different.

But familiar.

Her dark hair was shorter.

Her face carried years of exhaustion.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

Daniel knew immediately.

Sarah.

His sister.

The person he had spent seven years trying to forget.

The person he had spent seven years hoping would come back.

Neither of them moved.

The restaurant disappeared.

There was only silence between them.

Sarah looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel."

His name sounded strange coming from her.

Like a memory.

Like something lost.

Daniel couldn’t speak.

His throat tightened.

All the anger he had prepared disappeared.

All the questions disappeared.

Only one thing remained.

"You’re alive."

Sarah nodded.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I’m sorry."

Those two words broke something inside him.

Daniel walked forward.

Slowly.

Then faster.

He stopped inches away from her.

"You were alive."

Sarah looked down.

"Yes."

"You let me think you left me."

"I know."

"You let me hate you."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"I know."

Daniel’s voice cracked.

"Why?"

Sarah looked at him.

And for the first time in seven years, he saw the pain she had been carrying.

"Because I knew if you knew the truth, you would come looking for me."

Daniel shook his head.

"I would have helped you."

"No."

Her answer was immediate.

"You would have fought."

Daniel said nothing.

Because she was right.

Sarah stepped closer.

"You always think you can fix everything."

A small, broken smile appeared on her face.

"Even when you’re the person who needs saving."

Daniel looked at her.

"Tell me everything."

Sarah glanced around the restaurant.

At their mother.

At David.

At Emma.

Then she looked back at him.

"Not here."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

Sarah’s expression changed.

Because she was afraid.

"Because he knows I’m here."

Daniel felt the same cold feeling from before.

"Who?"

Sarah looked toward the windows.

"The person who caused the accident."

The restaurant suddenly felt dangerous.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Richard?"

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

Everyone froze.

"Then who?"

Sarah looked directly at him.

"The person you trusted the most."

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Before he could ask another question, every phone in the restaurant rang at the same time.

Customers looked around.

Servers reached into their pockets.

Dozens of screens lit up.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

He opened the message.

His face changed.

Emma noticed.

"What is it?"

Daniel didn’t answer.

Sarah saw his expression.

And she immediately knew.

"Show me."

Daniel handed her the phone.

Sarah read the message.

The color disappeared from her face.

"What does it say?" Evelyn asked.

Sarah slowly lowered the phone.

"It says..."

She stopped.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Say it."

Sarah looked at him.

"The person who has been protecting you..."

A pause.

"The person who helped hide the truth..."

Another pause.

Daniel waited.

Sarah whispered:

"Is standing in this room."

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

Looking at each other.

Trying to understand.

Then Daniel heard footsteps behind him.

Someone moved closer.

Someone who had been silent the entire time.

Someone who knew exactly when Sarah would return.

Daniel turned around.

May you like

And the person standing behind him said:

"She was never supposed to find you again."
