Chapter 2 - The Name Hidden Inside the Brace

The phone slipped from Daniel Carter’s hand as he stared at the message.

"Ask Emma about Sarah."

Four words.

That was all.

But they felt heavier than any accusation he had ever received.

For seven years, Daniel had avoided that name.

Sarah.

His younger sister.

His only sibling.

The person who had once been the closest person in his life.

Until the night everything changed.

Daniel slowly picked up his phone from the storage room floor.

Emma was still sitting across from him.

She had stopped repairing the brace.

Her hands rested on her knees.

She was watching him carefully.

Not with fear anymore.

With recognition.

"Who sent that?" she asked.

Daniel looked at her.

The question caught him off guard.

"You know?"

Emma looked away.

"I know that name."

The storage room suddenly felt smaller.

The shelves filled with restaurant supplies seemed to disappear.

All Daniel could see was Emma.

And the medical brace in her hands.

"How do you know Sarah?"

Emma took a slow breath.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she carefully closed the brace.

"Because Sarah was the reason I’m still alive."

Daniel froze.

The words didn’t make sense.

His mind rejected them before he could even understand them.

"What did you say?"

Emma looked up.

"Seven years ago, I was in a car accident."

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

Seven years.

The same year Sarah disappeared from his life.

The same year his sister left Chicago without explanation.

The same year their family stopped talking about her.

"My doctor said I would probably never walk normally again," Emma continued. "I had multiple surgeries. I lost my job. I lost my apartment. I lost almost everything."

Daniel listened silently.

"But someone paid for my treatment."

Emma looked at him.

"Someone who didn’t want anyone to know."

Daniel’s heart started beating faster.

"Sarah."

Emma nodded.

"Your sister."

The room went completely quiet.

Daniel stepped back.

"No."

Emma’s expression softened.

"I knew you wouldn’t believe me."

"No," Daniel repeated.

This time louder.

"Sarah never told me about anyone."

Emma looked down.

"That’s because she didn’t want you to know."

Daniel felt anger rise.

The same anger he had carried for years.

"Why?"

Emma hesitated.

"Because she blamed herself."

Those words hit him.

Daniel stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Emma looked at the brace beside her.

"When the accident happened, Sarah was driving."

Daniel stopped breathing.

For seven years, Daniel had believed Sarah left because she was selfish.

Because she couldn’t handle responsibility.

Because she abandoned their family after making a mistake.

That was the story he had created.

The story he had repeated so many times that he stopped questioning it.

But now Emma was telling him something different.

"She was driving?" he whispered.

Emma nodded.

"It was raining. She lost control. My car was hit."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Images came rushing back.

The phone call.

The hospital hallway.

His mother crying.

Sarah standing in the corner, covered in guilt.

Then the argument.

The worst argument they ever had.

"You ruined everything," Daniel had told her.

Sarah had looked at him like he had broken something inside her.

Then she left.

And never came back.

Daniel opened his eyes.

"She told me she wasn't responsible."

Emma’s expression changed.

"Because she was protecting someone."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

Emma didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she reached into her bag.

From inside, she pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

She handed it to him.

Daniel unfolded it.

His hands immediately recognized the handwriting.

Sarah’s handwriting.

The note was short.

Daniel,

I know you hate me right now.

Maybe you should.

But please believe me when I say I never meant for anyone to get hurt.

There is something I found that night.

Something I was never supposed to see.

If I tell you the truth, it will destroy someone you love.

So I have to leave.

I’m sorry.

— Sarah

Daniel read it three times.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

"Where did you get this?"

Emma looked nervous.

"She gave it to me."

"When?"

"Before she disappeared."

Daniel looked up sharply.

"You knew where she went?"

Emma’s eyes filled with sadness.

"I knew where she wanted to go."

"Where?"

Emma hesitated.

"Daniel..."

"No."

His voice became firm.

"Seven years ago, my sister vanished. Everyone told me she ran away. My parents thought she abandoned us. I spent years believing she didn't care."

He stepped closer.

"Now you're telling me you knew something?"

Emma looked down.

"I promised her."

"Promised her what?"

"That I wouldn’t tell anyone unless she came back."

Daniel stared at her.

"And did she?"

Emma said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

Daniel felt his anger changing.

Not disappearing.

Changing.

Because underneath the anger was something much worse.

Fear.

"Emma."

She looked at him.

"Where is Sarah?"

Before she could answer, the restaurant noise returned.

A customer laughing.

A glass breaking.

Footsteps in the hallway.

Reality came rushing back.

Emma quickly stood up.

Daniel noticed the effort it took.

The pain she tried to hide.

Without thinking, he reached out.

She almost lost balance.

He caught her arm.

For a second, they stood there.

The man who had judged her.

The woman who had hidden her pain.

Neither spoke.

Then Daniel quietly said:

"Why did you keep working here?"

Emma looked confused.

"What?"

"You could have left. You could have told everyone. You could have explained."

Emma gave a small, tired smile.

"Because Sarah asked me to."

Daniel’s hand slowly released her arm.

"Why?"

Emma looked toward the restaurant door.

"Because she said your restaurant was the only thing she was proud of."

Daniel felt a sharp pain in his chest.

That made no sense.

Sarah had always loved his restaurant.

She had helped him choose the name.

She had painted the first sign.

She had been there when he opened the doors.

Then she disappeared.

"I don’t understand."

Emma looked at him.

"Sarah wasn’t running away from you."

Daniel waited.

"She was running away from someone else."

The words settled between them.

Someone else.

Not him.

Not their family.

Someone else.

Daniel looked at the old note again.

The handwriting.

The warning.

The fear.

"Who?"

Emma opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Her eyes moved past Daniel.

Toward the storage room doorway.

Her face changed.

Daniel turned around.

A shadow moved outside.

Someone had been standing there.

Listening.

"Who is it?" Daniel asked.

Emma didn’t answer.

Her expression had gone completely pale.

"Daniel..."

The way she said his name made his body tense.

"What?"

Emma slowly pointed toward the hallway.

"He knows I’m here."

Daniel looked confused.

"Who?"

Emma whispered:

"The person Sarah was afraid of."

A second later, the lights in the storage room flickered.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared.

This time from an unknown number.

Daniel opened it.

His blood went cold.

There was only one sentence.

"Stop asking questions, or Emma won’t be the only person who disappears."

Daniel looked up at Emma.

She was already staring at the storage room door.

Because the handle was moving.

May you like

Slowly.

Someone was opening it from the outside.
