Chapter 4 - The Truth She Buried

"Daniel... we need to talk."

The voice came from behind him.

A voice he had heard thousands of times.

A voice he had trusted.

Daniel slowly turned around.

Standing in the hallway was his mother.

Evelyn Carter.

She looked older than he remembered.

Her silver hair was pulled back neatly, but her eyes carried years of exhaustion.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t surprised.

She looked afraid.

Emma immediately stepped back.

Daniel noticed.

And that scared him more than anything.

Because Emma knew her.

"You knew," Daniel said.

His mother looked at the paper on the floor.

Then at Emma.

Then back at him.

"I was hoping you would never find out this way."

Daniel felt something break inside him.

Not because she was there.

Because of the words.

Never find out.

Not never happen.

Not never misunderstand.

Find out.

"You knew about Sarah."

Evelyn looked down.

A long silence followed.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

"Seven years."

His voice became quieter.

"Seven years you let me believe my sister abandoned us."

His mother closed her eyes.

"I was trying to protect you."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Protect me from what?"

Evelyn looked at Emma.

"From the truth."

The storage room felt frozen.

Emma looked between them.

"Mrs. Carter..."

Evelyn interrupted softly.

"You shouldn't have kept working here."

Emma lowered her eyes.

"I promised Sarah."

"I know."

Daniel looked shocked.

"You know about Emma?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Sarah told me everything."

Daniel stared at his mother.

Everything.

That word hurt.

Because everyone knew something except him.

His own family.

His own sister.

Even Emma.

Everyone had pieces of the story.

And Daniel had been left with a lie.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

His mother's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Sarah made me promise."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the hallway.

"No, that doesn't make sense."

He turned back.

"Sarah would never ask you to lie to me."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You don't know what Sarah was trying to stop."

Daniel felt his anger rise.

"Then tell me."

His mother hesitated.

For years, Daniel had known his mother as someone who always had an answer.

Someone who held the family together.

But now she looked lost.

"I found out the accident wasn't random."

Daniel already knew.

But hearing it from his mother made it real.

"What happened?"

Evelyn looked toward the dining room.

The restaurant continued moving.

Customers eating.

Servers walking.

People laughing.

A normal afternoon.

While Daniel’s entire life was collapsing behind a storage room door.

"Your father had business problems before the accident."

Daniel frowned.

"My father?"

His father had died three years before.

A heart attack.

That was what everyone said.

"Richard Hale was pressuring him."

Daniel stared.

"Richard?"

His mother nodded.

"Your father discovered Richard was moving money from their company."

Daniel felt numb.

Richard Hale.

The man who helped their family after his father died.

The man who gave Daniel advice.

The man who acted like he cared.

"He was stealing?"

Evelyn looked away.

"Your father confronted him."

Daniel whispered:

"And Sarah found out?"

"Yes."

Evelyn continued.

"She found documents. Bank transfers. Evidence."

Daniel remembered the note.

Something I found.

Something I was never supposed to see.

His breathing changed.

"Then the accident..."

His mother nodded slowly.

"Sarah believed Richard tried to stop her from exposing him."

Daniel looked at Emma.

Everything connected.

The accident.

The note.

The fear.

The disappearance.

"But why did Sarah leave?"

Evelyn’s expression changed.

"Because she thought Richard knew where you lived."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

"Sarah believed you were next."

The words hit him harder than anything before.

His sister wasn’t running away.

She was running from danger.

And she was trying to keep him safe.

Daniel leaned against the wall.

All those years.

All those angry thoughts.

All those times he told himself Sarah didn’t care.

She had cared so much that she disappeared.

Emma quietly spoke.

"She kept watching over you."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Emma swallowed.

"Sarah checked on you."

"How?"

"Through me."

Daniel stared.

Emma looked ashamed.

"She asked me to apply here."

The revelation confused him.

"You came here because of Sarah?"

Emma nodded.

"She wanted someone she trusted near you."

Daniel looked around the restaurant.

Suddenly everything felt different.

Every time Emma dropped something.

Every time she disappeared.

Every time she looked exhausted.

She wasn't avoiding work.

She was watching.

Protecting.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Emma’s voice became quiet.

"Because Sarah believed you would do exactly what you're doing now."

"What?"

"Go after Richard."

Daniel looked away.

Because she was right.

If he had known seven years ago, he would have confronted Richard immediately.

He would have demanded answers.

He would have put himself in danger.

Sarah knew him better than he knew himself.

A sound came from the restaurant.

A chair moving.

Then footsteps.

Someone walking toward them.

Evelyn immediately changed.

Her face became serious.

"Someone else is here."

Daniel looked at her.

"Who?"

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked to the storage room entrance and closed the door.

"Nobody can know we talked."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

His mother looked terrified.

"Because the person who has been watching this restaurant isn't Richard."

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

"Then who?"

Evelyn looked at Emma.

Then at him.

"Someone you invited into your life."

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

The hallway outside became quiet.

Too quiet.

His phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Daniel opened it.

His face changed.

The message contained a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Taken inside the restaurant.

It showed Daniel, Emma, and his mother standing together in the storage room.

Someone had been watching them.

Right now.

Daniel looked at the timestamp.

Thirty seconds ago.

His blood ran cold.

Because the camera angle was impossible.

The picture had been taken from inside the storage room.

From behind them.

Emma slowly turned around.

Her voice barely came out.

"Daniel..."

He followed her eyes.

The dark corner behind the shelves moved.

May you like

Someone stepped forward.

And Daniel heard the person say his name.
