Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Door

The storage room door opened slowly.
Daniel Carter didn’t move.
Neither did Emma.
For one frozen second, the only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the old refrigerator near the shelves.
Then the door stopped.
A hand appeared around the edge.
Daniel stepped forward immediately.
"Who’s there?"
No answer.
The hand disappeared.
The door slammed shut.
Daniel rushed toward it and pulled it open.
The hallway was empty.
Only the sound of distant conversations from the dining room remained.
Emma grabbed his arm.
"Don’t."
Daniel turned.
Her face was pale.
"What do you mean, don’t?"
Emma looked terrified.
"That’s what Sarah did."
Daniel stared at her.
"What?"
"She chased answers."
Emma swallowed.
"And every time she got closer to the truth, someone tried to scare her away."
Daniel looked down the hallway again.
For years, he had believed his sister was the person who ran away.
The person who gave up.
But now every piece of information was changing the story.
Sarah hadn’t disappeared because she didn’t care.
She disappeared because she knew something.
Something dangerous.
Daniel closed the storage room door.
Then he lowered his voice.
"Tell me everything."
Emma looked at him.
"I already told you too much."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"You told me pieces. I need the whole story."
Emma looked uncertain.
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to leave.
Then she looked at the medical brace beside her.
At the restaurant uniform she was still wearing.
At the place where she had spent months being judged.
And something inside her changed.
"Seven years ago, after the accident, Sarah visited me every day."
Daniel listened.
"She came to the hospital when nobody else did. She sat beside my bed. She helped me through every surgery."
Emma smiled sadly.
"She was the only person who didn’t look at me like I was broken."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
He had never known that.
Not once.
"Why didn’t she tell me?"
Emma looked at him.
"Because you wouldn’t have listened."
The answer hurt because it was true.
Daniel remembered those days.
He remembered being angry.
He remembered refusing Sarah’s calls.
He remembered telling his parents that he didn’t want to hear excuses.
"I was angry," he admitted.
Emma nodded.
"Sarah knew."
Daniel looked back at her.
"What happened after?"
Emma took a breath.
"Three weeks after my final surgery, Sarah came to my apartment."
"What did she say?"
"She said she found something in the police report."
Daniel leaned closer.
"What?"
Emma hesitated.
"Something that proved the accident wasn’t just an accident."
The room went silent.
Daniel felt his heart speed up.
"What do you mean?"
Emma walked toward the shelf.
She pulled out a small envelope hidden behind a stack of paper towels.
Daniel watched as she held it.
"I kept this because I thought one day she would come back."
She handed it to him.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A picture of the road where the accident happened.
At first, it looked normal.
A rainy street.
A damaged car.
Police lights.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A second vehicle.
Parked near the accident scene.
A black SUV.
Its license plate was visible.
Daniel looked closer.
He recognized it.
His expression changed.
"No."
Emma watched him.
"You know that car?"
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he did.
The black SUV belonged to someone he knew.
Someone who had been around his family for years.
Someone who had attended his restaurant opening.
Someone who had comforted him after Sarah disappeared.
"Daniel."
He looked up.
"Who owns this car?"
Daniel’s fingers tightened around the photo.
"Richard Hale."
Emma’s face changed.
"You know him?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Richard was my father’s business partner."
The name hung in the air.
Richard Hale.
A man everyone trusted.
A man who had helped Daniel rebuild his restaurant.
A man who had always acted like family.
But now Daniel remembered something.
The night Sarah disappeared, Richard had been the last person who called him.
He had told Daniel:
"Let her go. Some people can’t handle their mistakes."
At the time, Daniel believed him.
Now he wasn’t sure.
"Why would Richard be there?" Daniel whispered.
Emma looked at him.
"Because Sarah thought he caused the accident."
Daniel looked shocked.
"That’s impossible."
"That’s what she thought too at first."
Emma sat down.
"Sarah found something strange. The brakes on her car had been damaged before the accident."
Daniel felt cold.
"Someone sabotaged the car?"
Emma nodded.
"And Sarah believed Richard knew about it."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He said it quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
"Richard wouldn’t do that."
Emma looked at him.
"That’s exactly why Sarah was afraid."
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Because suddenly he remembered something.
The week before the accident.
Sarah had called him.
She had sounded nervous.
She had said:
"I think someone close to us is lying."
Daniel had ignored her.
He had told her she was being paranoid.
He had told her she always looked for problems.
A painful memory returned.
Sarah’s final words before she disappeared.
"One day you’ll realize I was trying to protect you."
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had forgotten.
Or maybe he had forced himself to forget.
A knock interrupted them.
Three slow knocks.
Both Daniel and Emma froze.
The storage room door.
Daniel looked toward it.
Nobody spoke.
Then another knock.
This time louder.
Emma whispered:
"He found us."
Daniel stood between her and the door.
"Stay behind me."
The handle moved.
Slowly.
Daniel reached for the metal shelf beside him.
Not because he thought it would protect him.
Because he needed something to hold onto.
The door opened.
But nobody entered.
A folded piece of paper slid across the floor.
Then the door closed again.
Daniel waited.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Then he picked up the paper.
Emma watched his face.
"What does it say?"
Daniel unfolded it.
His hands started shaking.
There were only two lines.
The first line was a warning.
The second line was a name.
Daniel read it silently.
Then he looked at Emma.
"No."
"What?"
He handed her the paper.
Emma read it.
Her face lost all color.
Because the name written underneath the warning was not Richard Hale.
It was someone neither of them expected.
Someone who had been standing beside Daniel the entire time.
The paper fell from Emma’s hands.
May you like
And from the hallway outside, a familiar voice whispered:
"Daniel... we need to talk."
