Chapter 11 - The Sister Who Was Erased

"I finally found my brother."
The words echoed through the house.
Nobody moved.
The woman standing at the entrance looked at me with tears in her eyes.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Something else.
Recognition.
Like she had spent her entire life searching for a face she had only seen in dreams.
I stared at her.
My mind refused to accept another impossible truth.
A mother who was alive.
A father who wasn't my father.
A sister who was supposed to be dead.
And now this woman was standing in front of me.
Calling me her brother.
"Who are you?"
My voice came out colder than I expected.
The woman took a step forward.
Then stopped.
"I know this is a lot."
A strange sentence.
Because everyone kept saying that.
I know this is a lot.
I know this hurts.
I know you don't understand.
But nobody seemed to understand that my entire life had been turned upside down in one night.
"My name is Clara Cross."
The room went silent.
Cross.
The same last name from the birth certificate.
The same last name as Daniel.
I looked at Richard.
His face had completely changed.
He looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
"You knew."
I didn't ask.
I already knew.
Richard looked away.
Clara noticed.
"You never told him."
Her voice was full of disappointment.
Richard said nothing.
"Of course you didn't."
She stepped into the room.
"I spent twenty-nine years wondering why my brother disappeared."
My heart stopped.
"Disappeared?"
She looked at me.
"That's what they told me."
I frowned.
"They?"
Clara looked toward Richard.
"And him."
The anger returned instantly.
I turned to my father.
"What did you do?"
Richard shook his head.
"Lucas, listen to me."
"No."
I raised my hand.
"No more."
My voice shook.
"I have listened my entire life."
I pointed around the room.
"To lies."
"To excuses."
"To people telling me they were protecting me."
I looked directly at Richard.
"But nobody protected me."
The room was silent.
Clara looked down.
"I know what that feels like."
I looked at her.
"Because they took you too?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
The answer hit me harder than I expected.
Because suddenly, she wasn't just another secret.
She was someone who had lost years too.
"Tell me everything."
Clara looked at Richard.
He closed his eyes.
Like he already knew the truth was finally escaping.
She took a deep breath.
"When our mother gave birth, there were two babies."
She looked at me.
"You and me."
I nodded slowly.
"I was born first."
She smiled sadly.
"Three minutes."
I almost laughed.
Three minutes.
After everything.
A tiny detail.
But somehow it made her feel real.
"My mother wanted to raise both of us."
She looked at the old photograph.
"But someone had other plans."
"Victor?"
She nodded.
"He was involved."
My jaw tightened.
"How?"
Clara looked at Richard.
"Because Victor wasn't working alone."
The room became cold.
I already knew what was coming.
But I still asked.
"With who?"
Clara looked at my father.
"Richard."
I stared.
"No."
Richard stepped forward.
"Lucas."
I shook my head.
"No."
Because admitting it meant accepting something I wasn't ready for.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who held me when my mother died.
Could also be the reason my family disappeared.
"I didn't know what Victor was planning."
Richard's voice broke.
"I thought I was saving you."
I looked at him.
"You keep saying that."
He lowered his eyes.
"Because it's true."
Clara laughed quietly.
But there was no happiness in it.
"You always say that."
Richard looked at her.
"I was trying to keep you safe."
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"You were trying to keep the Carter name alive."
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Clara.
"What happened to you?"
Her expression changed.
The pain returned.
"I was taken."
My hands tightened.
"By Victor?"
She nodded.
"But not because he wanted me."
"Then why?"
She looked at Richard.
"Because I was evidence."
My father looked away.
"Evidence of what?"
Clara answered.
"That Richard wasn't your biological father."
I froze.
"Why would that matter?"
She looked at me.
"Because Daniel Cross knew the truth."
The room went silent.
"Daniel knew Richard wasn't your father?"
She nodded.
"He knew before you were born."
I thought about the phone call.
The warning.
The photograph.
Everything.
"Then why didn't he come back?"
Clara looked down.
"Because he thought we were both dead."
My chest tightened.
"Both?"
She nodded.
"Your mother and me."
I looked at her.
"Wait."
My voice lowered.
"You were the baby they said died?"
Clara nodded.
"Yes."
A thousand questions filled my head.
But one stayed above all others.
"Why?"
She looked toward the window.
"Because someone needed everyone to believe I never existed."
I looked at Richard.
"Who signed the death record?"
He didn't answer.
Clara did.
"Richard."
The silence after that was unbearable.
I stepped back.
My father looked like he wanted to explain.
But there were no words left.
Not anymore.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
From Daniel.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Do not trust Clara."
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Clara.
She noticed my expression.
"What happened?"
I didn't answer.
Because another message arrived.
This time with a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Taken inside the house.
A photograph of Clara.
Standing beside Victor.
Only hours earlier.
My hands started shaking.
I looked at her.
"Where were you tonight?"
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Panic.
"Lucas..."
I stepped back.
"Answer me."
She looked at the phone.
Then at Richard.
Then toward the window.
And whispered:
May you like
"Because I wasn't the one who found you..."
The lights in the house suddenly went out.
