Chapter 6 - The Person Behind The Photograph

The hospital door opened slowly, and a woman whispered: "Daniel..." When I turned around, I found my mother's old assistant holding my father's missing journal. But one sentence was written across the first page: "Your mother knew everything." I finally realized the secret that destroyed my marriage began inside my own family.
I turned around.
The woman standing at the door looked like she hadn't slept in days.
She was holding a worn leather notebook.
A notebook I recognized.
Not because I had seen it before.
Because I had spent years searching for it.
My father's journal.
My heart stopped.
"Where did you get that?"
The woman looked at Emily.
Then at me.
Her hands were shaking.
"Your father gave this to me before he died."
I couldn't move.
"Who are you?"
She stepped into the room.
"My name is Rachel Morgan."
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way Emily reacted told me everything.
Emily looked terrified.
"Rachel..."
Rachel looked at her.
"You weren't supposed to wake up yet."
The words made the room colder.
I stepped between them.
"What does that mean?"
Rachel lowered her eyes.
"It means someone is still watching."
I looked at the door.
Then the hallway.
The same fear Emily had shown.
The same fear Victor had shown.
Everyone seemed to know something except me.
I was tired of being the last person to know the truth about my own life.
"Start talking."
Rachel looked at the journal.
Then handed it to me.
"Your father knew he was in danger."
I took it.
The leather cover was old.
Scratched.
Worn from years of being hidden.
"Why didn't I know about this?"
Rachel hesitated.
"Because your father didn't trust anyone around you."
The sentence hurt.
Even though I knew she wasn't blaming me.
"My own father didn't trust me?"
"No."
She shook her head.
"He didn't trust the people around you."
I opened the journal.
The first page was covered in handwriting.
My father's handwriting.
The same handwriting I remembered from birthday cards.
From notes he left on the kitchen counter.
From the last letter he wrote before he died.
But this wasn't a letter.
It was a warning.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then the truth has already started coming out.
My hands tightened.
The next sentence made my chest feel heavy.
I was wrong about the person I trusted most.
I looked at Rachel.
"Victor?"
She didn't answer.
That was an answer.
I kept reading.
The person who betrayed me is not the only one responsible. There is someone closer. Someone I never expected.
Someone closer.
My mind searched through every person in my life.
Employees.
Friends.
Family.
Then one name appeared.
A name I didn't want to consider.
My mother.
I stopped reading.
Rachel noticed.
"You saw it."
I looked up.
"Saw what?"
"The name your father was afraid to write."
My stomach tightened.
"What are you talking about?"
Rachel sat down.
"Your father didn't die because of the company."
I stared at her.
"Then why?"
She looked at Emily.
"Because he found out the truth about your mother."
Silence.
Emily looked away.
Like she had known this moment would come.
I shook my head.
"No."
Rachel looked at me.
"Daniel."
"No."
I stepped back.
"My mother loved my father."
"Yes."
"She raised me."
"Yes."
"She would never hurt him."
Rachel's expression softened.
"I didn't say she killed him."
That stopped me.
"What did you say?"
"I said your father discovered something about her."
I looked at the journal again.
"What?"
Rachel took a deep breath.
"Your mother had been moving money from the company for years."
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
"That's insane."
"I know what it sounds like."
"She had everything."
Rachel nodded.
"That was why your father couldn't understand it."
Emily whispered:
"Daniel..."
I looked at her.
"You knew?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I knew part of it."
"Part?"
"I found the records."
The room became silent.
"The records your father hid."
I looked at Emily.
"You found this before our wedding."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her voice broke.
"Because Victor convinced me you already knew."
My face changed.
"What?"
"He told me your father had warned you."
I stared at her.
"He lied."
She nodded.
"Yes."
Everything returned.
The messages.
The distance.
The divorce.
Victor had been moving pieces around us.
Making us believe things that weren't real.
Rachel opened her bag.
She pulled out another document.
"This is what your father wanted you to see."
I took it.
A company transfer record.
A signature.
My mother's signature.
And beside it...
Another signature.
Victor's.
My breathing stopped.
"They worked together?"
Rachel shook her head.
"Not at first."
"What does that mean?"
"Victor discovered what your mother was doing."
"And?"
"He used it."
I looked at her.
"Used it how?"
Rachel looked toward Emily.
"By threatening to expose her."
Emily whispered:
"He controlled both sides."
I felt sick.
Victor wasn't protecting me.
He wasn't protecting Emily.
He was protecting himself.
"He created the divorce."
Rachel nodded.
"He needed Emily away from you."
"Why?"
She didn't answer immediately.
That scared me.
"Because your father left something behind."
"What?"
"A key."
I looked confused.
"A key?"
Rachel nodded.
"A key to the account that contains all the evidence."
"Where is it?"
She looked at Emily.
Emily's face changed.
"No."
Rachel looked at her.
"Emily..."
"No."
Emily grabbed my hand.
"Daniel, don't."
"Don't what?"
She looked at me.
"Don't open it."
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because the person who has been trying to find it already knows where it is."
The room became silent.
Then my phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A new message.
From Victor.
Only one sentence.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
You finally found Rachel.
Another message arrived.
This time, it included a picture.
A live photo.
Taken from outside the hospital room.
The picture showed me.
Emily.
Rachel.
Together.
Watching us.
The message below appeared.
Now ask her why she was the last person to see your father alive.
I slowly looked up at Rachel.
Her face had changed.
May you like
Because she knew exactly what Victor was talking about.
Then the hospital lights suddenly went out.
