Chapter 6 - The Battle for Emma Carter’s Life

The city had a way of hiding its darkest secrets.

During the day, Chicago looked alive.

People walked through crowded streets carrying coffee cups. Businessmen rushed into glass buildings. Families laughed in restaurants. Children ran through parks without knowing how much danger existed beyond their small worlds.

But Luca Romano knew better.

He knew that beneath every beautiful city was another city.

One built on secrets.

On deals made behind closed doors.

On people who believed money could erase anything.

Including murder.

And now, that hidden world had noticed him.

Luca sat inside his office overlooking the city skyline, the evidence from Daniel Carter spread across the desk.

The flash drive.

The photograph.

Rachel Morgan’s warning.

Kenneth Pike’s name.

Everything pointed in the same direction.

Someone powerful had built a machine.

A machine designed to steal money from people who had no ability to fight back.

And Daniel Carter had tried to break it.

That was why he died.

Not because he was unlucky.

Because he refused to stay silent.

Marcus entered the room.

“We found something.”

Luca looked up.

“Rachel?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Not yet.”

He placed a folder on the desk.

“We traced the Northbridge accounts.”

Luca opened it.

Inside were records of transfers.

Hospital foundations.

Insurance companies.

Private organizations.

All connected through layers of fake companies.

A system designed to make money disappear.

Then Luca saw a name.

His expression changed.

“Victor Hale.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

Victor Hale.

The name belonged to one of Chicago’s most respected businessmen.

A billionaire.

A philanthropist.

A man whose face appeared on charity advertisements across the city.

People loved Victor Hale.

He donated millions.

Built hospitals.

Funded schools.

Created scholarships.

A perfect public image.

But Luca had learned something important in his world.

The cleaner the image…

the more carefully someone was hiding the dirt.

“How long has he been involved?” Luca asked.

Marcus looked through the documents.

“According to Daniel’s files, at least six years.”

Luca leaned back.

Six years.

Six years of stolen money.

Six years of people being denied treatment.

Six years of innocent families suffering while someone became richer.

Then he thought about Emma.

About Sophie.

About the hospital bed.

A seven-year-old girl standing in the rain.

Three dollars in her hand.

Luca closed the folder.

“Get me everything on Victor Hale.”

Marcus nodded.

“And Kenneth Pike?”

“Everything.”

At Saint Catherine Medical Center, Emma Carter received another notice.

This one was different.

Not a delay.

Not a review.

A cancellation.

Her surgery had been removed from the schedule.

The paper shook slightly in her hand.

She stared at the words.

Procedure postponed indefinitely.

Those words meant something.

They meant someone had decided.

Not the doctors.

Not the insurance company.

Someone else.

Someone who had power.

Dr. Nisha Patel entered the room moments later.

She saw the paper.

Her face immediately changed.

“They did it.”

Emma looked up.

“You knew?”

Dr. Patel closed the door.

“I suspected.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone is interfering.”

Emma laughed quietly.

“Someone?”

Her voice became bitter.

“Doctor, someone has been interfering for three years.”

Dr. Patel sat beside her.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked at her.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I’m tired of people being sorry.”

Dr. Patel lowered her eyes.

Emma immediately regretted the words.

She knew the doctor had been fighting for her.

But fear was exhausting.

And exhaustion made people angry.

“I’m sorry,” Emma whispered.

Dr. Patel nodded.

“I understand.”

Then she looked toward Sophie.

The little girl was drawing again.

“What will happen if you don’t get the surgery?”

Emma looked away.

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Dr. Patel already knew.

That evening, Luca arrived at the hospital.

He immediately noticed something was wrong.

Emma’s expression told him.

“What happened?”

She handed him the paper.

Luca read it.

His jaw tightened.

“They canceled it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Emma looked at him.

“You know why.”

For several seconds, Luca said nothing.

Then he folded the paper.

“No.”

Emma frowned.

“No?”

“They wanted you to believe you lost.”

She looked confused.

“What?”

“This is not a medical decision.”

“Then what is it?”

“A message.”

Luca placed the paper on the table.

“They want you afraid.”

Emma stared at him.

“They’re winning.”

The honesty of her words surprised him.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was tired.

Three years of fighting.

Three years of losing.

A person could only carry so much.

Luca stepped closer.

“They made one mistake.”

“What?”

“They thought you were alone.”

Emma looked at him.

“And I’m not?”

Luca looked toward Sophie.

“No.”

Later that night, Luca sat with Sophie in the hospital hallway.

The little girl held a juice box in her hands.

“Are you angry?”

Luca looked at her.

“Why?”

“Your face gets serious when you’re angry.”

He almost smiled.

“You notice a lot.”

“My mom says I notice things because I listen.”

Luca nodded.

“That’s a good skill.”

Sophie looked down.

“Are you going to leave?”

The question surprised him.

“No.”

“Promise?”

Luca was silent.

Promises were dangerous.

He had learned that.

People broke promises.

People died.

People left.

But Sophie was waiting for an answer.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

A moment passed.

Then she asked:

“Are you really a bad person?”

The question was simple.

But it hit harder than any accusation.

Luca looked at the floor.

“What do you think?”

Sophie thought carefully.

“You look scary.”

Luca almost laughed.

“But you gave me back my money.”

A pause.

“And you came when nobody else did.”

She looked at him.

“So maybe you’re not bad.”

Luca looked away.

Because the truth was complicated.

He had done things he was not proud of.

He had hurt people.

He had crossed lines.

But sitting there beside a child who believed he could still be good…

he wondered if people were only the worst thing they had ever done.

The next morning, Luca received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice.

Kenneth Pike.

“Mr. Romano.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“What do you want?”

“I wanted to offer you advice.”

“I don’t need it.”

“You should listen anyway.”

Silence.

“Walk away.”

Luca looked out the hospital window.

“No.”

Kenneth sighed.

“You don’t understand what you’re involving yourself in.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“No, you don’t.”

Kenneth’s voice became colder.

“Daniel Carter thought he could expose people more powerful than him.”

“And?”

“He died.”

The words hung in the air.

Luca’s hand tightened around the phone.

Kenneth continued.

“You are making the same mistake.”

Luca spoke quietly.

“The difference between me and Daniel?”

A pause.

“What?”

“Daniel was trying to save the truth.”

Luca looked toward Emma’s room.

“I’m trying to protect his family.”

Silence.

Then Kenneth said:

“You really think you can win?”

Luca answered:

“Yes.”

Kenneth laughed.

“You’re a criminal pretending to be a hero.”

Luca’s expression did not change.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But at least I know what I am.”

The call ended.

That afternoon, everything changed.

Dr. Patel rushed into Emma’s room.

Her face was pale.

“Emma.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What happened?”

She closed the door.

“I found something.”

Luca immediately stood.

“What?”

Dr. Patel held a document.

“Your surgery wasn’t canceled because of money.”

Emma stared.

“Then why?”

Dr. Patel looked at Luca.

“Because someone requested a medical risk review.”

Luca frowned.

“Who?”

Dr. Patel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Kenneth Pike.”

Silence.

Emma’s face went pale.

“He’s trying to declare her too risky for surgery,” Luca said.

Dr. Patel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Meaning if Emma’s condition became worse…

the hospital could legally deny responsibility.

Luca understood.

This was not just about money anymore.

They were trying to remove the final obstacle.

Emma Carter.

The last person connected to Daniel.

“They’re going to let her die,” Sophie whispered.

Everyone turned.

The little girl had heard.

Emma immediately reached for her.

“Sophie…”

But Luca saw something.

The fear in the child’s eyes.

The same fear Daniel must have felt.

The fear of losing someone you love.

Luca walked toward the window.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

He answered.

“What?”

The response was urgent.

“Boss.”

Luca immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

“We found Rachel.”

Luca froze.

“Where?”

A pause.

Then Marcus said:

“She’s alive.”

Hope appeared for the first time in days.

Then Marcus continued.

“But she’s being held.”

Luca’s expression changed.

“By who?”

The answer came quietly.

“Victor Hale.”

The billionaire.

The philanthropist.

The man everyone trusted.

Luca looked at Emma.

Then Sophie.

Then the hospital room around him.

The battle had changed.

This was no longer about exposing corruption.

It was about survival.

And Luca Romano finally understood the truth.

The enemy was not trying to hide the past.

May you like

They were trying to control the future.

And the future depended on whether Emma Carter lived long enough to reveal it.
