Chapter 4 - The Mafia Boss Who Discovered the Truth Was Personal

Luca Romano had spent his entire life learning one important lesson:

Everyone had a price.

Some people wanted money.

Some wanted power.

Some wanted revenge.

And some wanted to be remembered.

But Daniel Carter had been different.

He had not been chasing wealth.

He had not been trying to build an empire.

He had been trying to expose one.

That made him dangerous.

Not because he had weapons.

Not because he had soldiers.

But because he had something powerful people feared more than anything.

The truth.

Luca stood outside Saint Catherine Medical Center, looking up at the hospital windows.

The city moved around him.

Cars passed.

People walked through the rain.

Everyone continued living their ordinary lives, unaware that beneath the surface, powerful people were fighting a silent war.

A war over documents.

Over money.

Over lives.

Marcus stood beside him, holding the fake nurse’s transmitter inside a small evidence bag.

“She wasn’t alone,” Marcus said.

Luca did not look away from the building.

“I know.”

“She had professional training.”

“I know.”

Marcus studied him.

That was the thing about Luca.

When he became quiet, it was usually when things were becoming dangerous.

The old Luca would have already ordered someone to find the person responsible.

The old Luca would have responded with fear.

But something had changed.

A seven-year-old girl had walked into his world and forced him to see something he had spent years ignoring.

Not every battle was about winning.

Some were about protecting.

“What do you want to do?” Marcus asked.

Luca looked at the hospital.

“Find the truth.”

Marcus nodded.

“And after?”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“Then we decide what happens to the people who buried it.”

Inside the hospital room, Emma Carter was staring at Daniel’s letter.

She had read it countless times in her mind over the last three years.

But she had never actually opened it.

She had been afraid.

Not of the words.

Of what the words would mean.

Because once she knew the truth, she could never return to the life she had before.

A life where Daniel’s death was just a tragedy.

A life where she could tell Sophie that sometimes bad things happened for no reason.

Now she knew better.

Sometimes bad things happened because someone chose them.

Sophie sat beside her bed, coloring on a piece of paper a nurse had given her.

“What are you drawing?” Emma asked.

The little girl looked up.

“Us.”

Emma smiled softly.

“Who is that?”

“That’s me.”

“And this?”

“Mommy.”

Emma looked at the third figure.

“And him?”

Sophie smiled.

“Luca.”

Emma’s smile faded slightly.

“Why did you draw him?”

Sophie looked confused.

“Because he helped us.”

Emma touched her daughter’s hand.

“Sophie, you have to understand something.”

“What?”

“Not everyone who looks scary is good.”

Sophie thought about that.

Then answered:

“But not everyone who looks scary is bad.”

Emma froze.

The words were simple.

Childlike.

But they carried a truth adults often forgot.

She looked toward the door.

Luca Romano.

The man everyone feared.

The man who had walked into her life carrying a dangerous reputation.

Yet he was the only person who had listened.

The only person who had not treated her like a problem on a form.

The only person who had looked at Sophie and seen a child.

Not a burden.

Not a complication.

A child.

Two hours later, Luca returned.

This time, he was not wearing his suit jacket.

He had removed the symbol of power.

The expensive watch.

The perfect appearance.

He looked less like a man people feared.

And more like a man searching for answers.

“I found something,” he said.

Emma immediately sat straighter.

“What?”

Luca placed a folder on the table.

“Daniel’s employment records.”

Emma looked confused.

“How?”

“Connections.”

She almost smiled.

Of course.

A man like Luca had connections everywhere.

“What did you find?”

Luca opened the folder.

“Three months before Daniel died, he accessed financial records connected to a medical charity.”

Emma listened carefully.

“The same charity that funded Saint Catherine?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He discovered that money was disappearing.”

“How much?”

Luca looked at the numbers.

“Over twenty million dollars.”

Emma went silent.

Twenty million.

A number too large to feel real.

“They were stealing medical funding?”

“Not exactly.”

Luca turned the page.

“They were moving it.”

“To where?”

“That’s what Daniel was trying to find out.”

Emma looked at the documents.

“Who was involved?”

Luca pointed to several names.

Executives.

Board members.

Financial officers.

Then one name appeared.

Kenneth Pike.

Emma’s face changed.

“He was part of it.”

“Yes.”

“The same man who denied my treatment.”

Luca nodded.

“Because you’re not just a patient.”

Emma looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re a witness.”

The room became silent.

“They didn’t care about the surgery.”

Emma’s breathing slowed.

“They wanted me gone because I was connected to Daniel.”

Luca nodded.

“And Sophie was the reason they couldn’t simply disappear you.”

Emma looked toward her daughter.

A mother’s fear appeared instantly.

“What are they going to do?”

Luca’s voice became firm.

“They won’t get close to her.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“Yes, I can.”

Emma looked at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“I do.”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to watch someone you love become a target.”

Luca was silent.

For a moment, something passed across his face.

Pain.

Hidden.

Old.

Emma noticed.

“You do.”

Luca looked away.

The room became quiet.

Then he finally spoke.

“My younger brother.”

Emma waited.

“He was fourteen.”

The words came slowly.

“Wrong place. Wrong time.”

“What happened?”

Luca looked at the floor.

“I was supposed to protect him.”

Emma understood.

And for the first time, she saw something beyond the reputation.

Beyond the mafia boss.

She saw a man carrying guilt.

“I’m sorry.”

Luca nodded.

“I spent years convincing myself that caring about people made you weak.”

He looked at Sophie.

“I was wrong.”

That night, Luca made a decision.

One he had avoided for years.

He called someone he trusted.

Not an associate.

Not a soldier.

Someone who dealt in information.

“Find everything about Daniel Carter.”

The voice on the other end answered:

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even sealed records?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Luca, this involves hospitals.”

“I know.”

“People higher than you.”

“I know.”

Another pause.

“Then why are you doing this?”

Luca looked through the hospital window.

Sophie was asleep beside Emma’s bed.

Because of her.

Because of three dollars.

Because someone had decided a mother and daughter were acceptable losses.

“Because they chose the wrong family.”

The next morning, Luca received the first report.

It was not good.

Daniel had not been investigating alone.

There was another person.

Someone who had helped him.

Someone who disappeared two weeks before Daniel died.

A woman named Rachel Morgan.

Financial analyst.

Former employee of the foundation.

Last known location:

Chicago.

Status:

Missing.

Luca read the file twice.

Then he noticed something.

A photograph attached to the report.

Rachel standing beside Daniel.

Both holding documents.

Behind them was a building.

A familiar building.

Westbridge Library.

The place where Daniel and Emma had first met.

The place where Daniel had proposed.

The place where he had told Emma:

“If anything ever happens, remember where our story began.”

Luca looked at the photograph.

Then at Marcus.

“Prepare the car.”

“Where?”

“Westbridge Library.”

Marcus nodded.

Then hesitated.

“Boss?”

Luca looked at him.

“What?”

“If Daniel hid something there…”

“Yes?”

“Whoever killed him may already know.”

Luca folded the photograph.

“I know.”

“Then isn’t it a trap?”

Luca opened the car door.

“Probably.”

Marcus frowned.

“And you’re still going?”

Luca looked back toward the hospital.

Toward Emma.

Toward Sophie.

Toward the little girl who had believed a dangerous man could still be good.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Luca answered without hesitation.

“Because Daniel Carter died trying to protect his family.”

He stepped into the car.

“And now I’m going to finish what he started.”

The vehicle disappeared into the city streets.

But Luca did not know that someone was already watching.

From across the road, a man lowered his phone.

The call connected.

“He found the library.”

A voice answered.

“Then we know where he’s going.”

The man smiled.

“Should we stop him?”

A pause.

Then the answer came.

“No.”

“Let him find it.”

“Why?”

“Because when Luca Romano opens Daniel Carter’s secret…”

The voice became colder.

“He’ll finally understand who his real enemy is.”

The call ended.

And somewhere beneath the city…

a hidden war began.
