Chapter 3 - The Secret Her Husband Died Trying to Protect

The rain did not stop that night.

It continued tapping against the hospital window like a reminder that some storms were not meant to pass quickly.

Luca Romano sat in the corner of Emma Carter’s hospital room, the old envelope resting in his hand.

He had read Daniel Carter’s final message three times.

The words had not changed.

They had only become heavier.

The person who ordered my death is the same person who will try to finish what they started.

Most people would have called it a warning.

Luca saw it differently.

It was a challenge.

Daniel Carter had known he was being hunted.

He had known someone powerful wanted him silent.

And before he disappeared, he had prepared a way for the truth to survive.

The question was simple.

Who was the truth meant for?

And why had it found Luca?

Across the room, Sophie slept in the visitor chair.

She was curled beneath a hospital blanket, her pink jacket folded beside her. Even asleep, one of her small hands held the three dollar bills Luca had returned to her.

She had refused to put them away.

“They are important,” she had told him.

Luca thought about that.

Three dollars.

A child’s entire fortune.

A payment offered to a man everyone else feared.

It should have meant nothing.

But somehow, it meant everything.

Emma watched him from the bed.

“You’re still here.”

Luca looked up.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

It was a simple question.

One he did not expect.

Most people asked what he wanted.

What he planned.

What he would do.

Nobody asked why.

He looked toward Sophie.

“She trusted me.”

Emma followed his gaze.

“She doesn’t know who you are.”

Luca’s expression remained calm.

“Maybe that’s why.”

Emma was quiet.

She understood.

Sophie did not see the rumors.

She did not see the fear.

She only saw a man who might help.

And somehow, that made the responsibility heavier.

“You should leave before this becomes dangerous,” Emma whispered.

Luca looked back at her.

“Emma.”

His voice was lower now.

“You already know it’s dangerous.”

Her eyes moved toward the envelope.

“You read Daniel’s letter.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know.”

“Know what?”

“That whoever killed my husband won’t stop.”

Luca stood.

“Tell me everything.”

Emma looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“Three years ago, Daniel started changing.”

Luca listened.

“Not in a bad way. He was always serious. Always working. But he became careful.”

“How?”

“He checked the locks twice before sleeping. He stopped discussing work at home. He changed his passwords constantly.”

“Did he tell you why?”

“No.”

“Why didn’t you ask?”

Emma smiled sadly.

“Because I knew him.”

She looked down.

“When Daniel loved someone, he tried to protect them by carrying everything alone.”

Luca understood that.

Too well.

“What was he investigating?”

Emma took a deep breath.

“He worked for a financial auditing company. They reviewed large corporations, hospitals, charities…”

She paused.

“And government contracts.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“Money.”

“Yes.”

“Follow the money, and you find the truth.”

Emma looked at him.

“That’s exactly what Daniel used to say.”

Luca walked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights blurred through the rain.

“How did Kenneth Pike become involved?”

Emma’s expression changed.

“Daniel found something.”

“What?”

“I don’t know everything.”

Luca looked back.

“But you know something.”

Emma hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Daniel found evidence that money was being moved through several organizations.”

“What organizations?”

“A medical foundation.”

Luca froze.

The same type of foundation connected to hospital funding.

Emma continued.

“He discovered that certain patients were being denied treatment while donations were redirected somewhere else.”

A cold silence filled the room.

Luca had heard many forms of corruption.

But there was something especially cruel about using sick people as numbers on a spreadsheet.

“Your husband found proof?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Emma looked at the envelope.

“I don’t know.”

“Daniel didn’t tell you?”

“He tried.”

She swallowed.

“But someone was listening.”

Luca turned.

“What do you mean?”

Emma’s face became pale.

“One night, Daniel came home after midnight.”

She closed her eyes.

“He was terrified.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

That surprised Luca.

A man investigating criminals had been afraid.

Not for himself.

For his family.

“He told me to pack a bag.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

Emma looked at Sophie.

“I was angry. I thought he was overreacting.”

Her voice cracked.

“I told him he was letting his work destroy our family.”

The regret in her voice was obvious.

“What happened?”

“He hugged me.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“He told me he was sorry.”

“For what?”

“For bringing danger into our lives.”

Luca remained silent.

“He kissed Sophie goodnight.”

Emma looked at her sleeping daughter.

“And the next morning, he was dead.”

The room felt smaller.

Luca had heard hundreds of stories.

Some from victims.

Some from enemies.

Some from people who lied.

But Emma was not lying.

He could feel it.

“What did the police say?”

“Car accident.”

“Do you believe that?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was afraid of something.”

She looked at him.

“And Daniel Carter was not a man who scared easily.”

Luca looked at the letter again.

The handwriting was steady.

No panic.

No desperation.

Only preparation.

Daniel had known he might not survive.

“So where is the evidence?” Luca asked.

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she searched through memories.

Then she suddenly opened them.

“There was something.”

“What?”

“A phrase.”

“What phrase?”

“He told me if anything happened, I should remember…”

She stopped.

Luca waited.

“Remember the first place we promised forever.”

The words hung in the air.

“What does that mean?”

Emma looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

Luca thought.

A location.

A memory.

A hidden message.

People who hid things rarely chose random places.

They chose places with meaning.

“Where did you and Daniel first meet?”

Emma stared.

Then slowly answered.

“A library.”

“Which one?”

“The old Westbridge Library.”

Luca nodded.

“Where did he propose?”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“The same place.”

“Interesting.”

Emma looked at him.

“You think he hid something there?”

“I think your husband knew someone would come looking.”

Luca looked toward the door.

“And I think he prepared for that person.”

Before Emma could respond, a noise came from outside.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

The same kind as before.

Luca immediately moved.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

He placed himself between the door and Sophie.

Emma noticed.

“You think they followed you?”

Luca did not answer.

The handle moved.

The door opened slightly.

A nurse stepped inside.

But Luca did not relax.

Something was wrong.

The nurse smiled.

“Sorry to interrupt.”

Luca studied her.

“Can I help you?”

“I need to check Mrs. Carter’s medication.”

Emma frowned.

“I already received my medication.”

The nurse paused.

Only for a second.

But Luca noticed.

The nurse looked toward the envelope.

Not Emma.

Not the patient.

The envelope.

That was enough.

Luca stepped forward.

“Who sent you?”

The nurse’s expression changed.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“I’m just doing my job.”

“No.”

Luca’s voice became colder.

“You’re looking for something.”

The nurse backed away.

Then reached into her pocket.

Emma gasped.

But Luca was faster.

He grabbed her wrist before she could pull anything out.

The woman struggled.

Not like a nurse.

Like someone trained.

Within seconds, Luca had her against the wall.

The fake badge fell to the floor.

Marcus entered immediately after hearing the noise.

“Boss?”

Luca looked at the woman.

“Check her.”

Marcus searched her.

He found a small device.

A recording transmitter.

Emma covered her mouth.

“They were listening.”

Luca looked at the device.

Then at Daniel’s letter.

Everything connected.

The hospital.

The paperwork.

Kenneth Pike.

The visitors.

They were not trying to deny Emma’s surgery.

That was only the surface.

They were searching.

Searching for something Daniel had left behind.

Something they believed Emma had.

Luca released the woman to his guards.

Then he looked at Emma.

“Your husband didn’t just discover corruption.”

Emma stared at him.

“What?”

“He discovered something important enough that people are still hunting for it three years later.”

He picked up the envelope.

“And they think the key is with you.”

Emma looked terrified.

“I don’t have anything.”

“I believe you.”

“Then what do we do?”

Luca looked at Sophie.

The little girl slowly opened her eyes.

“Are you leaving?”

The question stopped him.

Luca walked over.

“No.”

Sophie looked relieved.

“Good.”

She held up the three dollars.

“I knew you were nice.”

For the first time in years, Luca almost smiled.

But then his phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Luca Romano.”

His expression changed.

“Who is this?”

“You should walk away from the Carter family.”

Luca looked at Emma.

Then Sophie.

The voice continued.

“Daniel Carter died because he refused to listen.”

Silence.

Then Luca replied:

“No.”

A pause.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.”

Luca looked at the little girl holding three dollars.

“Yes.”

His voice became colder.

“I think I do.”

The caller laughed softly.

“You’re making the same mistake Daniel made.”

“What mistake?”

The answer came quietly.

“Believing you can save people.”

The call ended.

Luca stared at the phone.

Then at the city outside.

For years, people had feared him because they believed he had no weakness.

They were wrong.

His weakness had just walked into the rain carrying three dollars.

And now he had something more dangerous than revenge.

A reason.

A reason to destroy whoever thought they could hurt an innocent family and walk away.

May you like

Because Daniel Carter’s secret was no longer hidden.

And Luca Romano was going to find it.
