Chapter 5 - The Enemy Inside The System

Westbridge Library had not changed.
At least, that was what Luca Romano thought when he stepped through the old wooden doors.
The building stood quietly between two modern skyscrapers, almost forgotten by the city around it. The brick walls were covered with years of weather stains. The large windows reflected the gray morning sky. Inside, the smell of old books and polished wood filled the air.
It was the kind of place where secrets could survive.
A place where people whispered.
A place where memories stayed hidden.
Luca stood near the entrance, looking around.
Most people would have seen an ordinary library.
He saw a crime scene.
Not because there were signs of violence.
Because Daniel Carter had chosen this place.
People like Daniel did not hide things randomly.
They hid things where emotions created blind spots.
A place nobody would think to search.
A place nobody would destroy.
Marcus walked beside him.
“Quiet place.”
Luca nodded.
“Too quiet.”
Marcus looked around.
“You think someone is here?”
“I think someone always is.”
That was the truth Luca had learned from his world.
The absence of danger did not mean safety.
Sometimes it meant someone was better at hiding.
They walked deeper into the library.
The old wooden floors creaked beneath their steps.
Near the back wall was a small reading area.
A large window overlooked the street.
And beside it stood a familiar object.
A wooden bench.
Luca stopped.
Marcus noticed.
“What?”
Luca looked at the bench.
“This was in the photograph.”
The photograph from Daniel’s file.
Daniel and Rachel standing nearby.
Documents in their hands.
The beginning of something that had eventually cost Daniel his life.
Luca approached slowly.
His eyes moved over every detail.
Scratches on the wood.
Old carvings.
A small metal plaque attached beneath the seat.
Nothing obvious.
Nothing suspicious.
But Daniel had been careful.
Luca crouched down.
“Help me move it.”
Marcus grabbed the other side.
Together, they shifted the heavy bench away from the wall.
Behind it was nothing.
For a moment, Marcus frowned.
“Maybe we’re wrong.”
Luca did not answer.
He ran his hand along the wall.
Then stopped.
A small section of wood felt different.
Not damaged.
Not loose.
Just different.
He pressed it.
A quiet click echoed.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
Marcus immediately reached for his weapon.
Luca stopped him.
“Relax.”
He removed the box carefully.
No traps.
No alarms.
Just an old metal container covered in dust.
Inside were three items.
A flash drive.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
Luca picked up the note first.
The handwriting was Daniel’s.
If you found this, then they failed to stop the truth.
Luca continued reading.
The people responsible are not outside the system. They are inside it.
His expression changed.
Marcus watched.
“What does it say?”
Luca handed him the note.
Marcus read silently.
Then looked up.
“Inside the system?”
Luca nodded.
“Someone with access.”
“Police?”
“Maybe.”
“Government?”
“Maybe.”
“Hospital?”
Luca looked at the flash drive.
“Yes.”
Marcus became serious.
“So Daniel knew.”
“He knew enough.”
Luca picked up the photograph.
It showed Daniel with Rachel Morgan.
But this time, Luca noticed something else.
A third person was standing behind them.
A man in a gray suit.
Partially hidden.
But recognizable.
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
Kenneth Pike.
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
“That’s him?”
“Yes.”
“He was there when Daniel found the evidence?”
“Looks like it.”
Luca stared at the photograph.
Kenneth Pike had not been cleaning up a problem.
He had been part of creating it.
Back at Saint Catherine Medical Center, Emma received a visitor.
She expected Luca.
Instead, she saw Kenneth Pike.
The same calm smile.
The same expensive suit.
The same expression of someone who believed he was untouchable.
Emma immediately felt cold.
“What are you doing here?”
Kenneth closed the door behind him.
“I wanted to discuss your situation.”
“My situation?”
“Yes.”
He walked closer.
“Your surgery request.”
Emma stared.
“You denied it.”
“I reviewed it.”
“You delayed it.”
“I followed procedure.”
Emma laughed quietly.
A tired, bitter laugh.
“Is that what you call it?”
Kenneth looked at Sophie sleeping in the chair.
His eyes stayed there for a moment too long.
Emma noticed.
“What do you want?”
Kenneth returned his attention to her.
“I want to help you.”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Kenneth looked surprised.
“You should be careful.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“I have been careful for three years.”
Silence.
“Since my husband died.”
Something changed in Kenneth’s face.
Only for a second.
But enough.
Emma saw it.
“You knew Daniel.”
Kenneth smiled.
“Many people knew Daniel.”
“No.”
Emma shook her head.
“You knew what he found.”
Kenneth stepped closer.
“Mrs. Carter, grief can make people believe things.”
“And money can make people hide them.”
His smile disappeared.
The room became colder.
“You think Luca Romano can protect you?”
Emma said nothing.
Kenneth leaned closer.
“He is dangerous.”
“So are you.”
That answer surprised him.
For the first time, Kenneth looked at her differently.
Not like a sick woman.
Not like a victim.
Like a problem.
“You should tell him to stop.”
Emma looked directly into his eyes.
“No.”
Kenneth sighed.
“That’s unfortunate.”
He turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Your husband made the same mistake.”
Emma froze.
“What mistake?”
Kenneth looked back.
“Thinking truth matters more than power.”
Then he left.
At the same time, Luca arrived at an abandoned warehouse near the river.
The flash drive had been encrypted.
But his people had managed to open part of it.
Not everything.
Only enough to reveal a name.
Rachel Morgan.
The missing analyst.
Inside the recovered files were financial transfers.
Thousands of transactions.
Millions of dollars.
And one repeated destination.
A private account connected to a company called Northbridge Solutions.
Luca recognized it.
Everyone did.
A company that officially provided consulting services.
Unofficially?
A place where powerful people solved uncomfortable problems.
Marcus looked at the screen.
“Rachel discovered this?”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel helped her.”
“Yes.”
“Then why is she missing?”
Luca stared at the documents.
“Because she knew too much.”
A sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Not Luca’s.
The old phone sitting on the desk.
Marcus looked confused.
“No one knows we’re here.”
Luca walked toward it.
The phone continued ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
He picked it up.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice answered.
Quiet.
Afraid.
“Is this Luca Romano?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
Then:
“Daniel Carter told me about you.”
Luca froze.
“Who is this?”
“My name is Rachel Morgan.”
Marcus immediately looked at Luca.
The missing woman.
The woman everyone thought was gone.
Luca gripped the phone tighter.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t have much time.”
“Rachel, where are you?”
Her breathing became faster.
“They know I’m alive.”
“Who?”
A pause.
Then the answer came.
“The people who killed Daniel.”
Luca’s expression darkened.
“Tell me where you are.”
“I can’t.”
“Rachel.”
“There’s something you need to know.”
Her voice dropped.
“Daniel didn’t just find corruption.”
Luca waited.
“He found proof that the person controlling everything…”
The line crackled.
“Was someone he trusted.”
The call suddenly cut.
Luca stared at the phone.
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Someone he trusted?”
Luca looked back at Daniel’s files.
At Kenneth Pike’s name.
At the hidden evidence.
Then he realized something.
The enemy was not just inside the system.
It was inside Daniel’s life.
Someone close enough to know his plans.
Close enough to stop him.
Close enough to kill him.
His phone received a message.
One image.
A photograph taken moments earlier.
Luca.
Standing outside the library.
The sender was unknown.
Below the picture were four words.
You are next, Romano.
Luca looked at the screen.
Then slowly deleted the message.
Marcus watched him.
“What now?”
Luca picked up Daniel’s evidence.
“Now we find the person Daniel trusted.”
“And if they try to stop us?”
Luca looked toward the city.
His voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“Then they learn the same lesson everyone else learns.”
Marcus waited.
Luca continued.
“Secrets are dangerous.”
A pause.
“But the people protecting them are even more dangerous.”
And somewhere in Chicago, someone watching from the shadows realized something too late.
They had spent three years trying to bury Daniel Carter’s truth.
But they had forgotten one thing.
May you like
A dead man’s secret was dangerous.
A living man’s anger was worse.
