Chapter 6 - The Truth Daniel Buried

The closet door opened completely.

Emily didn't move.

Neither did Sarah.

For a moment, the entire hallway felt frozen.

The darkness inside the closet was empty.

No person.

No movement.

Nothing.

But that made it worse.

Because something had opened it.

Something had wanted them to look inside.

Emily slowly raised the flashlight.

The beam moved across the shelves.

Old boxes.

A broken lamp.

A stack of papers.

Then she saw it.

A small wooden box hidden behind the back wall.

Sarah immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Emily looked at her.

"What?"

Sarah's face turned pale.

"You can't open that."

Emily stared.

"Why?"

Sarah didn't answer.

And that was enough.

Emily reached into the closet.

She pulled the box out.

It was heavier than it looked.

There was no lock.

No label.

Only one thing written on the top.

A date.

The day Emily left for deployment.

Her fingers tightened.

"Daniel made this."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

Emily looked at her.

"Then who?"

Sarah looked away.

"Rachel."

Emily froze.

"My sister?"

Sarah nodded.

"She knew you would eventually find it."

Emily opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A small recorder.

And a letter.

The handwriting was Rachel's.

Emily hadn't seen it in six years.

Her hands shook as she unfolded it.

Emily,

If you are reading this, it means Daniel failed to stop you.

I need you to understand something.

Everything you believed about the last few years was carefully planned.

Emily stopped reading.

Her heartbeat increased.

Sarah watched silently.

The letter continued.

Daniel did not leave Lily alone because he forgot about her.

He left because he was trying to keep someone away from her.

Emily looked up.

"Someone?"

Sarah didn't answer.

Emily continued.

But the person he feared was not the person I feared.

It was someone inside our family.

Emily lowered the letter.

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

The little girl was still sitting on the couch.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emily quickly folded the letter.

She didn't want Lily to hear more.

She took the recorder from the box.

A small red light turned on.

A recording started automatically.

Rachel's voice filled the hallway.

"If you found this, Emily, please listen until the end."

Emily closed her eyes.

Hearing her sister again after years felt impossible.

"I know you think I abandoned you."

A pause.

"I didn't."

Emily felt tears form.

Rachel continued.

"Daniel told you I left because I was unstable."

Sarah looked down.

Emily looked at her.

"Was that true?"

Sarah whispered:

"No."

The recording continued.

"I discovered something about Lily before she was born."

Emily frowned.

Before she was born?

Rachel's voice became quieter.

"Something about Daniel's family."

Emily felt a chill.

"Daniel wasn't the first person to hide this secret."

The recording stopped.

A click.

Emily looked at the recorder.

"That's it?"

Sarah nodded.

"That's all I found."

Emily looked angry.

"Rachel left clues for years and you only found this?"

Sarah looked hurt.

"I tried to help her."

"Then why did she disappear?"

Sarah didn't answer.

Emily stepped closer.

"Tell me."

Sarah took a breath.

"Because she discovered who was following Lily."

"Who?"

Sarah looked toward the front window.

"The same person who is watching this house right now."

Emily immediately turned.

The SUV across the street was gone.

Her expression changed.

"Where did it go?"

Sarah walked closer.

"They moved."

"Who are they?"

Sarah hesitated.

Then said:

"The person Daniel was protecting you from."

Emily shook her head.

"Daniel is not protecting me."

Sarah looked at her.

"Maybe not anymore."

That sentence stayed between them.

Because Emily knew something had changed.

Daniel wasn't simply hiding something.

He was hiding from something.

Her phone rang.

Daniel.

Emily stared at the screen.

Sarah whispered:

"Don't answer."

Emily ignored her.

She picked up.

"Where are you?"

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Emily."

His voice sounded exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Tired.

"You found Sarah."

Emily looked at Sarah.

"How do you know?"

Daniel didn't answer.

"How long have you been watching me?"

A pause.

Then:

"Since you came home."

Emily felt betrayed.

"You put cameras in my house?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

Daniel went silent.

That silence confirmed something.

"Daniel."

His voice became lower.

"I need you to leave."

Emily almost laughed.

"After everything you've done, you're telling me what to do?"

"Emily, please."

The word shocked her.

Daniel never begged.

Not once.

"Why?"

"Because they know you're there."

Emily looked around.

"Who?"

Daniel breathed heavily.

"The people who took Rachel."

Emily froze.

"You told me she left."

"I lied."

The honesty surprised her.

"Why?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because I thought lying would keep you alive."

Emily felt tears burn her eyes.

"You let me hate my sister for six years."

"I know."

"You let me believe she abandoned us."

"I know."

"You let Lily grow up without knowing her aunt."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I know."

Emily closed her eyes.

For a moment, she heard the man she married.

Not the liar.

Not the person hiding secrets.

The man who sounded broken.

"Daniel..."

"Listen to me."

His voice became urgent.

"Get Lily and leave the house."

Emily looked at the hallway.

"Why?"

"Because the person you need to fear isn't outside."

A cold feeling moved through her.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Then she heard something.

A sound.

From his side of the phone.

A door closing.

Emily frowned.

"Where are you?"

Silence.

"Daniel?"

Finally, he whispered:

"I'm not on the cruise."

Emily stopped.

"What?"

"I never was."

The call ended.

Emily stared at the phone.

Sarah stepped closer.

"What did he say?"

Emily looked at her.

"He lied about everything."

Before Sarah could respond, the lights in the house suddenly turned off.

Lily screamed.

Emily immediately moved toward her.

"Stay behind me."

The emergency lights flickered on.

The hallway camera activated.

A small screen above the closet turned on.

A live feed appeared.

Emily saw herself.

Standing in the hallway.

Holding Lily.

Watching the screen.

Someone was controlling it.

Then a message appeared.

White letters on a black screen.

"Emily, you finally came home."

Emily stepped back.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Because another line appeared.

"Now you can meet the person who raised Lily while you were gone."

Emily stared at the screen.

The camera angle changed.

It moved.

Slowly.

Toward the closet.

The feed showed the inside.

A hidden room behind the wall.

A room Emily had never known existed.

May you like

And sitting inside that room...

was Rachel.
