Chapter 4 - The Person Who Was Never Supposed To Return

The closet door moved slowly.

Not opened.

Not forced.

Moved.

Like someone on the other side was carefully deciding whether they wanted Emily to see them.

Emily stood frozen.

The flashlight in her hand pointed directly at the crack between the door and the frame.

Behind her, Lily grabbed her mother's jacket.

"Mommy..."

Emily didn't answer.

Her military training took over.

Observe.

Listen.

Wait.

The person inside the closet knew she was there.

The person inside the closet had a reason to stay hidden.

And the worst part was...

The lock had opened from the inside.

Emily slowly raised one hand, signaling Lily to stay behind her.

The little girl nodded.

The hallway became completely silent.

Then a voice came from inside.

"Emily..."

Her entire body reacted.

Because the voice wasn't unfamiliar.

It wasn't the woman from the phone.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was someone she knew.

Someone she never expected to hear again.

Emily tightened her grip on the flashlight.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

Only a quiet breath.

Then:

"You need to get Lily out of this house."

Emily's eyes narrowed.

"If you know my daughter's name, you can tell me who you are."

The door opened another inch.

Emily stepped back.

"Don't come closer."

The person inside stopped.

Then a woman's hand appeared.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Emily prepared herself.

But when the woman stepped out, Emily forgot how to breathe.

She recognized her.

Not from the past few weeks.

Not from the news.

From years ago.

A memory she had buried.

A person she believed was gone.

The woman looked older.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

But alive.

"Sarah..."

The name escaped Emily's mouth.

The woman looked down.

"You remember me."

Emily couldn't move.

Sarah Miller.

Daniel's former business partner.

The woman who had disappeared five years earlier.

The woman everyone believed had moved away after a personal tragedy.

But Emily knew something else.

Sarah was the last person who had seen Daniel before he changed.

The last person who knew the secrets he refused to discuss.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Sarah looked at her.

"No."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"I was supposed to stay hidden."

Emily looked toward Lily.

Then back at Sarah.

"Why are you in my house?"

Sarah's eyes filled with guilt.

"Because I was protecting your daughter."

Emily laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"You locked yourself in my hallway closet and watched my family for months?"

Sarah looked away.

"I didn't have a choice."

"Everyone says that."

Emily stepped closer.

"Daniel said that."

Sarah's expression changed.

"Daniel told you?"

"He called me from a cruise while my daughter was starving in this house."

Sarah closed her eyes.

For the first time, Emily saw something different.

Not fear.

Pain.

"Emily..."

Sarah looked at Lily.

"He didn't leave her because he didn't care."

Emily's expression hardened.

"Don't defend him."

"I'm not."

Sarah swallowed.

"I'm telling you the truth."

She reached into her jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

Emily immediately stepped forward.

"What is that?"

"The reason Daniel ran."

Sarah handed it to her.

Emily didn't open it.

Not yet.

"Why were you hiding?"

Sarah looked toward the closet.

"Because someone was looking for me."

"Who?"

Sarah didn't answer.

Emily's patience disappeared.

"Who?"

Sarah whispered:

"The person who caused everything."

The hallway felt colder.

Emily opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Her.

Daniel.

Lily.

Taken outside their house.

But Emily had never seen it before.

On the back was a handwritten note.

"She still doesn't know."

Emily frowned.

"Who wrote this?"

Sarah looked at her.

"Daniel."

Emily stared.

"No."

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

Emily turned the photo over again.

Her hands became tense.

Because the handwriting looked exactly like Daniel's.

But the date shocked her.

The photo was taken three weeks before Emily left for deployment.

Before Daniel told her everything was fine.

Before Lily started acting differently.

Before the closet existed.

Emily looked at Sarah.

"What was Daniel hiding from me?"

Sarah hesitated.

Then she said:

"The truth about why you were sent away."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Sarah looked at Lily.

"Your deployment wasn't random."

Emily felt anger rising.

"Be careful."

"I'm serious."

Sarah stepped closer.

"There was a reason Daniel pushed you to accept that assignment."

Emily shook her head.

"Daniel didn't control my career."

"No."

Sarah looked directly into her eyes.

"He controlled what you believed."

A thousand memories rushed through Emily's mind.

The strange conversations before deployment.

Daniel suddenly encouraging her to leave.

The way he avoided talking about their future.

The way he kept saying:

"It will only be a few months."

Emily had thought he was supporting her.

Now she wondered if he was preparing for something.

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

Emily opened it.

Only one sentence.

"I know Sarah is with you."

Her heart stopped.

Another message arrived.

"She will tell you lies."

Then another.

"Ask her what happened the night Lily disappeared."

Emily looked at Sarah.

Sarah's face changed.

Because she had seen the messages.

"You know about that night?"

Emily's voice became quiet.

"What night?"

Sarah didn't answer.

Emily stepped closer.

"What happened to Lily?"

Sarah looked terrified.

"I can't tell you here."

"Why?"

"Because he can hear us."

Emily looked around.

"The cameras?"

Sarah nodded.

"Not just cameras."

Emily stared.

"What else?"

Sarah pointed toward the closet.

"The house."

Emily felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah walked back toward the closet.

Behind the shelves, she removed a hidden panel.

Inside was a small device.

A recording system.

Emily stared.

"Daniel installed this?"

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

"Then who did?"

Sarah looked at Lily.

And her voice became almost silent.

"The same person who was inside this house before you came home."

Emily's eyes widened.

"What person?"

Sarah reached into the hidden compartment.

She pulled out a small black box.

On the top was a name.

A name Emily hadn't heard in years.

A name that made Sarah's hands shake.

Emily read it.

And immediately recognized it.

Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone forever.

Sarah whispered:

"Your husband didn't hide the truth from you."

She looked at Emily.

"He hid the truth from them."

Emily slowly opened the box.

Inside was a phone.

The screen turned on by itself.

One new video file appeared.

Created today.

The title was simple.

No code.

No mystery.

Just one name.

Emily stared.

Because the name on the screen belonged to the person standing directly behind her.

The file opened.

May you like

And the first frame showed Lily's face...

from inside the closet.
