Chapter 3 - The Voice Behind The Door

"Emily Carter..."

The voice came from the laptop speakers.

Quiet.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

Emily stopped breathing for a moment.

She knew that voice.

Not because she had heard it recently.

Because she had spent years trying to forget it.

She slowly moved closer to the screen.

The video continued.

Daniel stood in front of the hallway closet.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

And behind him...

The closet door was open.

Only slightly.

Just enough for darkness to appear between the frame.

Emily stared.

The closet had been closed when she returned home.

Locked.

Hidden.

But in the video, someone had opened it.

Someone was inside.

"Who is that?" Emily whispered.

Lily stood behind her mother, holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Mommy..."

Emily turned.

The fear in her daughter's eyes was different now.

Not the fear of being alone.

The fear of remembering something.

"Lily."

The little girl looked down.

"Did you see someone in there?"

A long silence followed.

Then Lily slowly nodded.

Emily felt her chest tighten.

"Who?"

Lily squeezed the rabbit tighter.

"I don't know."

"Baby, look at me."

Lily looked up.

"Did you talk to them?"

Another slow nod.

Emily felt every instinct inside her warning her.

She lowered herself until she was at eye level with her daughter.

"What did they say?"

Lily's lips trembled.

"They said they knew you."

Emily froze.

"Me?"

Lily nodded.

"They said..."

The little girl stopped.

"Say it."

Lily looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

"They said you would come home early."

Emily stood up.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Someone knew.

Someone had predicted her return.

Someone had been inside her house.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emily grabbed the laptop and moved it closer.

She replayed the video.

Daniel appeared again.

Walking toward the closet.

Holding the key.

He looked over his shoulder.

Like he was afraid someone was watching him.

Then he whispered:

"I don't know how to fix this."

A voice answered from inside the closet.

A woman's voice.

Emily felt her fingers go cold.

Because it was the same voice she had heard on the phone.

The mysterious woman.

The one who warned her.

The one who knew about Daniel.

The woman inside the closet said:

"You were never supposed to leave Lily alone."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I didn't have a choice."

Emily paused the video.

She stared at the frozen image.

Daniel.

The closet.

The unknown woman.

None of it made sense.

She pressed play again.

The woman's voice continued.

"You promised Emily."

Daniel looked terrified.

"I tried."

"No."

The woman replied.

"You protected yourself."

Emily stopped the video again.

Her mind raced.

What promise?

What did Daniel know?

And why was her name being mentioned like she was part of a plan?

She closed the laptop.

She needed to find answers before whoever was behind this realized she was home.

Emily had spent years in the military learning one thing.

The first person to react emotionally was usually the person who lost.

She couldn't lose.

Not with Lily depending on her.

She grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer.

Then she checked the closet.

The lock was still there.

But now she noticed something she hadn't seen before.

A tiny red light.

A camera.

Someone had installed a hidden camera above the door.

Emily reached up and removed it.

Her hands tightened around the device.

Someone had been monitoring the closet.

But maybe they had been monitoring something else too.

Her.

Her family.

Her home.

She searched the hallway carefully.

Behind a painting.

Another camera.

Near the bookshelf.

Another one.

Emily's stomach dropped.

This wasn't a family secret.

This was surveillance.

Someone had been watching them.

For how long?

She looked at Lily.

"Sweetheart, when did Daddy put these cameras here?"

Lily shook her head.

"He didn't."

Emily looked closer.

"What do you mean?"

Lily pointed toward the closet.

"The person inside did."

Emily went silent.

"The person inside installed the cameras?"

Lily nodded.

"They told Daddy it was the only way to keep me safe."

Emily felt anger rise inside her.

Someone had convinced her husband that locking a child away from the truth was protection.

Someone had controlled him.

But why?

Her phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

Emily opened it.

A photograph.

Her blood turned cold.

It was a picture of her house.

Taken from outside.

Taken moments ago.

She looked toward the front window.

Nobody was there.

Another message appeared.

"Don't open the closet yet."

Emily stared.

Then another message arrived.

"Because the person inside is not the person you think."

She immediately called the number.

This time, someone answered.

The same woman.

"Who are you?"

The woman didn't respond.

"Tell me who you are."

A shaky breath came through the phone.

"Emily..."

The woman sounded like she was crying.

"I wanted to tell you the truth before he came back."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then:

"Daniel."

Emily looked toward the driveway.

"What are you talking about?"

The woman whispered:

"Your husband isn't coming home because he is afraid of what you will find."

Emily tightened her grip on the phone.

"Where is he?"

Silence.

Then the woman said:

"He's already there."

Emily turned.

The front door was still locked.

The house was silent.

But then...

A sound came from behind her.

A slow movement.

From the hallway.

From the closet.

Emily raised the flashlight.

The woman on the phone whispered one final thing.

"Emily... don't turn around."

But it was too late.

May you like

Because the closet door behind her slowly moved.

And the lock clicked open from the inside.
