Chapter 5 - The Girl In The Hidden Recording

The video opened.

Emily stopped breathing.

The screen showed her living room.

The same living room she was standing in right now.

But the timestamp was different.

Five days earlier.

The camera angle was impossible.

It wasn't from the hidden cameras Sarah had discovered.

It was from inside the closet.

Emily watched silently.

The video showed Lily walking slowly into the hallway.

Her small hands were holding her stuffed rabbit.

She looked afraid.

Then the closet door opened.

A voice called her name.

"Lily."

The little girl looked up.

"Are you there?"

Emily's hands tightened around the phone.

Because Lily didn't scream.

She didn't run.

She walked closer.

Like she already knew the person inside.

Sarah watched the screen beside her.

Her face became pale.

"Turn it off."

Emily didn't move.

"No."

"Emily."

"No."

Her voice became colder.

"I need to see."

The video continued.

Lily stood in front of the closet.

A shadow moved behind the door.

Then Lily whispered:

"Mommy is coming home soon."

Emily felt her heart stop.

The person inside answered:

"I know."

Lily hugged her rabbit.

"She won't be angry?"

A pause.

Then the voice said:

"She will be hurt."

Emily looked at Sarah.

"Who is that?"

Sarah didn't answer.

The video continued.

The person inside the closet reached out.

Only a hand appeared.

A woman's hand.

Emily stared.

The person touched Lily's hair.

And said:

"You have to remember everything."

The video suddenly glitched.

The image became distorted.

Then one final frame appeared.

A woman's face.

Emily dropped the phone.

Because she knew her.

Not from the past.

Not from a photograph.

From her own memories.

The woman in the video was someone she had spent years believing had betrayed her.

Someone who disappeared after Emily's first deployment.

Someone Daniel told her never to contact again.

Her own sister.

Rachel.

Emily stepped back.

"No..."

Sarah looked at her.

"You know her."

Emily couldn't answer.

Rachel Carter.

Her younger sister.

The person who had been missing for six years.

The person everyone believed had left the country.

The person Daniel claimed had abandoned the family.

But she was inside their house.

Talking to Lily.

Hiding in the closet.

Emily turned toward Sarah.

"Tell me everything."

Sarah remained quiet.

"Now."

Sarah looked toward Lily.

The little girl was sitting on the couch, watching them.

Emily lowered her voice.

"Lily cannot hear this."

Sarah nodded.

She followed Emily into the kitchen.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Sarah finally said:

"Rachel didn't leave."

Emily stared.

"What?"

"She disappeared because she found something."

"What?"

Sarah looked uncomfortable.

"About Daniel."

Emily felt anger rise again.

"Everyone keeps saying his name like he's the center of this."

"He is."

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"The man I married would never do this."

Sarah looked at her sadly.

"That's what makes him dangerous."

Emily didn't like the answer.

Because deep down...

A part of her was afraid Sarah was right.

"Why was Rachel hiding in my house?"

Sarah took a breath.

"Because she found out Daniel was being watched."

Emily frowned.

"By who?"

Sarah looked at the hallway.

"By the people who wanted Lily."

Emily froze.

"What do you mean wanted Lily?"

Sarah didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation scared Emily more than the words.

"Sarah."

"The night before your deployment, Daniel received a package."

Emily remembered.

A package.

She had seen it.

She remembered asking him about it.

He said it was work-related.

She believed him.

"What was inside?"

Sarah whispered:

"A file."

"About what?"

"Lily."

Emily felt her stomach drop.

"My daughter?"

Sarah nodded.

"Daniel discovered that someone had been tracking her since she was born."

Emily stepped backward.

"Why?"

Sarah looked down.

"Because of who her mother is."

Emily stared.

"Me?"

Sarah nodded.

"You were the reason."

The kitchen became silent.

Emily thought about every strange moment.

Every unexplained phone call.

Every time Daniel changed the subject.

Every time someone asked about her military background.

She had always assumed it was coincidence.

Now it felt like a pattern.

Her phone buzzed.

A new message.

Daniel.

Emily opened it.

A photo appeared.

Her heart stopped.

It showed Sarah.

Standing in the hallway.

Taken moments ago.

Daniel had sent it.

Then another message appeared.

"She is manipulating you."

Another.

"Ask her why Rachel trusted her."

Emily looked at Sarah.

Sarah's face changed.

"You need to leave."

Emily looked confused.

"What?"

"Right now."

"Why?"

Sarah walked toward the window.

Then pointed outside.

Emily looked.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

The engine was running.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching the house.

"Who is that?"

Sarah whispered:

"The reason I stayed hidden."

Emily reached for her phone.

"Call the police."

Sarah grabbed her arm.

"No."

Emily looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because they already know."

A cold feeling moved through Emily.

"What does that mean?"

Sarah released her hand.

"The police report from the night Rachel disappeared..."

Emily waited.

"...was filed by Daniel."

Emily went silent.

"That's impossible."

Sarah shook her head.

"It's true."

Emily grabbed the table.

"Daniel told me Rachel ran away."

"Because he needed you to believe that."

"No."

Emily stepped back.

"No, he loved me."

Sarah's eyes softened.

"Maybe he did."

That answer hurt more than an accusation.

"Then why?"

Sarah looked toward the closet.

"Because sometimes people do terrible things when they think they are protecting someone."

Emily looked at Lily.

Her daughter.

The child everyone kept trying to protect.

The child everyone kept lying to.

A sound came from the hallway.

Both women turned.

The closet door was open.

Emily slowly walked closer.

Inside was darkness.

But something was lying on the floor.

A small notebook.

Emily picked it up.

The cover had Lily's name written on it.

Her hands shook as she opened the first page.

Inside were drawings.

A house.

A family.

A closet.

And a woman standing inside.

Emily turned the page.

A sentence was written in a child's handwriting.

"Daddy said Mommy cannot know the truth."

Emily felt the world shift.

Another page.

Another sentence.

"Daddy said if Mommy finds Rachel, they will come back."

Emily stopped.

She looked at Sarah.

"Who is they?"

Sarah didn't answer.

Because her eyes were fixed on the final page.

Emily slowly turned it.

There was only one sentence.

Written much more recently.

Not by Lily.

Not by Daniel.

By someone else.

"I know you found the closet."

Emily's phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Sarah looked terrified.

"Don't answer."

Emily stared at the screen.

The call continued.

Then a voicemail notification appeared.

One new message.

Emily pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

A voice she recognized immediately.

Daniel.

But he wasn't calling from the cruise.

He wasn't afraid.

He sounded calm.

Too calm.

"Emily..."

A pause.

Then:

"If you are hearing this, it means Sarah failed to keep you away from the truth."

Emily looked at Sarah.

Daniel continued.

"And it means Rachel finally told you what happened."

Emily's face changed.

Because Daniel knew.

He knew everything.

Then the final sentence came.

The sentence that made Sarah step backward.

"Open the closet again, Emily."

A pause.

"Because the person you think is missing..."

The audio stopped.

May you like

And behind Emily...

the closet door slowly opened by itself.
