Chapter 8 - What Emma Drew

The aircraft was sealed immediately.
Nobody approached seat 1A.
Bomb technicians were called.
Ethan hated the word even though nobody had yet established there was an explosive.
Adrian had said "something."
Nothing more.
Vanessa went pale when she realized she had sat directly above whatever Daniel placed there.
For the first time, the stolen seat frightened her for a reason that had nothing to do with status.
Two hours later, technicians removed a small black package.
No explosive.
Inside was a solid-state drive.
And a handwritten note.
FOR ETHAN.
Vanessa sat down.
"He wanted you to have it."
"Maybe."
Ethan no longer assumed anything.
The drive was isolated from the network and examined.
Encrypted.
Emma watched from the secured office.
Then she tugged Ethan's sleeve.
"Dad, that's the box."
"What box?"
"The one I drew."
She flipped backward through her sketchbook.
There it was.
A small rectangle beneath seat 1A.
Ethan stared.
"When did you see it?"
"When my pencil rolled under the chair."
"Before Vanessa sat down?"
Emma nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I thought it belonged to the airplane."
Ethan kissed the top of her head.
"You didn't do anything wrong."
Those words had become the center of the day.
The drive contained one unencrypted file.
A photograph of Laura.
She stood beside Adrian Cole.
Date: three years earlier.
Seattle.
Ethan's knees weakened.
Laura had known Adrian personally.
The encrypted portion required two keys.
One had apparently been hidden in Laura's lost suitcase.
The second was unknown.
Then Vanessa noticed something.
"The bracelet."
Everyone looked at her.
"What?"
"My father gave Daniel a bracelet-sized security token years ago. Sinclair used hardware keys before we moved to biometric authentication."
"Where is it?"
"I don't know."
Vanessa touched her diamond bracelet unconsciously.
Then froze.
She removed it.
Inside the clasp was a tiny metal insert she had never noticed.
Marcus stared.
"Don't touch it."
A technician examined the bracelet.
It contained a hardware key.
Vanessa looked horrified.
"Daniel gave me this bracelet."
"When?"
"My promotion. Four years ago."
Daniel had hidden an encryption key in plain sight.
The drive opened.
Hundreds of records appeared.
Corporate travel modifications.
Hidden passenger histories.
Unauthorized upgrades.
Expense manipulation.
Evidence stretching back six years.
Sinclair Global employees.
Aurelia employees.
Outside clients.
Then a folder labeled L.W.
Ethan opened it.
Laura had discovered the scheme.
But she had also discovered something else.
Owen Mercer had not willingly created it.
Daniel had blackmailed him.
Mercer's wife needed an expensive medical treatment.
Daniel paid.
In return, Mercer altered records.
When Adrian discovered the activity, Mercer tried to stop.
Daniel threatened him.
Laura planned to expose everything.
Adrian staged his death after receiving threats.
Mercer was fired.
Daniel survived untouched.
And Charles Sinclair buried the investigation to protect his company.
Vanessa covered her face.
"My father knew."
"Some of it," Ethan said.
"He let Daniel stay."
"Yes."
She began crying.
Not dramatically.
Silently.
Ethan felt no satisfaction.
The truth did not become cleaner because someone deserved consequences.
Marcus opened another file.
ACCIDENT.
Ethan's heart stopped.
Laura's police report.
Photos.
Vehicle telemetry.
A note from Adrian.
NO EVIDENCE OF SABOTAGE.
Ethan read it twice.
Laura's death had been investigated privately by Adrian.
The crash was caused by a distracted truck driver who ran a red light.
No conspiracy.
No murder.
The relief hurt almost as much as the fear had.
Laura had not been killed because of the investigation.
She had simply been taken from them by a terrible accident.
Ethan sat down.
For three hours he had begun rewriting the worst day of his life.
Now reality returned.
Random.
Cruel.
Ordinary.
Emma approached.
"Dad?"
He pulled her close.
"Mom wasn't hurt because of this."
Emma didn't fully understand.
She hugged him anyway.
Marcus continued reviewing.
The drive proved Daniel had maintained the scheme after Laura's death.
Why bring the drive to Ethan now?
Why hide it beneath 1A?
The answer was in a text file.
D.P. WANTS IMMUNITY.
Daniel had been trying to trade evidence.
Adrian did not trust him.
Neither did Mercer.
Three guilty or compromised men had turned on one another.
Flight 217 had become their meeting point because Ethan's unexpected reservation created an opportunity.
Daniel knew Ethan would be at Monday's audit.
He intended Ethan to find the drive.
Mercer intended to expose Daniel.
Adrian intended to expose everyone.
Vanessa's seat demand accidentally disrupted the plan.
Then Robert's falsification created a manifest vulnerability Mercer exploited to force the flight to stop.
Marcus leaned back.
"So Mercer changed the passenger count deliberately."
"To ground the aircraft," Ethan said.
"He could've called security."
"He probably believed nobody would listen."
Noah looked ashamed.
Given what happened with Ethan's seat, it was difficult to argue.
Then a new file appeared.
It had been scheduled to unlock automatically.
Video.
Daniel Price appeared.
He looked exhausted.
"If this file opened, then Ethan Walker has the drive."
Vanessa stepped closer.
Daniel continued.
"I did things I cannot justify. I told myself I was protecting companies, jobs, people. Eventually I was only protecting myself."
He looked into the camera.
"Adrian has the final ledger."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Where?"
Daniel answered as if hearing him.
"Gate Twelve. Above the old international lounge."
Marcus looked up.
That section had been closed for renovation.
Daniel continued.
"But Adrian isn't the only person looking for it."
The recording ended.
At that exact moment, the airport lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Security radios erupted.
A restricted door had opened near Gate Twelve.
Ethan stood.
Marcus checked the access alert.
One badge had been used.
The badge belonged to Claire Donovan.
Everyone turned toward her.
Claire stared at the screen.
"My badge is in my pocket."
She reached for it.
May you like
Her pocket was empty.
Then, from the hallway outside, they heard someone running...
