Chapter 12 - The Passenger They Could Not Erase

The recording cut out.

File corruption.

Marcus tried recovery.

Nothing.

The name was missing.

For a moment Ethan almost laughed.

After an entire day of digital manipulation, the final truth had been defeated by a damaged video file.

Then Emma pointed at the waveform.

"There's still sound after Mom stops."

The technicians isolated it.

Background audio.

Laura had been recording in a hotel.

A television played behind her.

Then another voice entered the room.

Male.

Laura said, "You shouldn't be here."

The man answered.

Too faint.

Technicians amplified it.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"I know him."

Ethan looked at her.

"Who?"

Vanessa stared at the speaker.

"My father."

Charles Sinclair.

The room went quiet.

But the recording continued.

And what they heard changed the meaning completely.

Charles wasn't threatening Laura.

He was warning her.

"Daniel knows you're investigating him."

Laura replied, "Then help me expose him."

"I can't."

"You mean you won't."

"If this becomes public, thousands of employees could lose their jobs."

"That's what Daniel told you."

Charles said nothing.

Laura's voice hardened.

"You're not protecting employees, Charles. You're protecting yourself."

He admitted it.

He had discovered Daniel's scheme.

Instead of reporting it, he concealed it.

Not because Daniel controlled him.

Because scandal frightened him more than corruption.

Daniel was protecting Charles because Charles's approval allowed Daniel to keep operating.

The missing mastermind was not a secret criminal genius.

He was a respected businessman who had chosen silence again and again.

Ethan understood why Laura left him out of the ledger.

She lacked evidence that Charles directed the illegal modifications.

Now the recording established knowledge and concealment.

Vanessa sat down.

"My father."

Nobody offered false comfort.

Later that afternoon, Charles surrendered.

Daniel remained in custody.

Mercer cooperated.

Adrian and Rachel entered witness protection while investigators determined their roles.

The immediate danger was ending.

But another battle had begun.

Aurelia's board called Ethan.

They wanted a statement.

They wanted containment.

They wanted the word "isolated."

Ethan refused.

"This wasn't isolated."

A board member argued that public disclosure could destroy confidence in the airline.

Ethan looked through the glass at Emma.

"Then earn it back."

They asked him to delay publication until after Monday's audit.

"No."

They warned him about stock prices.

"No."

They mentioned lawsuits.

"No."

Finally one director said, "Ethan, think about what this will do to Aurelia."

Ethan answered, "I'm thinking about what Aurelia did to passengers when employees decided powerful clients mattered more."

Silence.

The meeting ended.

Marcus smiled faintly.

"That won't make you popular."

"I didn't buy 1A to be popular."

The story was already exploding online.

Video showed Vanessa pointing at Ethan.

Another clip captured Emma asking whether they had done something wrong.

Millions watched.

Ethan hated that part most.

His daughter's pain had become content.

He asked news organizations not to identify Emma.

Some complied.

Others didn't.

Vanessa released a statement accepting responsibility for her conduct without excuses.

She did not mention the investigation beyond confirming cooperation.

Then she did something Ethan didn't expect.

She asked to speak with Emma.

Ethan left the decision to his daughter.

Emma said yes.

Vanessa sat across from her.

"I said something cruel to your dad."

"I know."

"I thought having money made me more important."

Emma considered this.

"Does it?"

"No."

"Did you know that before?"

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I think I knew it. I just didn't behave like I knew it."

Emma nodded thoughtfully.

"Mom said knowing something and doing it are different."

Ethan turned away for a second.

Laura again.

Everywhere.

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"Your mom sounds smart."

"She was."

Emma opened her sketchbook.

She tore out the drawing of Vanessa sitting in 1A.

Vanessa looked confused.

Emma handed it to her.

"So you remember."

Vanessa accepted it.

"I will."

That evening, Aurelia arranged another flight.

Ethan declined.

Emma had endured enough.

They would stay overnight and travel the next day if she wanted.

As they prepared to leave, Marcus approached.

"There's another issue."

Ethan almost laughed.

"Of course there is."

"The board reviewed the access logs."

"And?"

"Someone at headquarters attempted to delete Laura's archive thirty minutes ago."

Ethan stopped.

"Daniel is in custody."

"Charles doesn't have access."

"Mercer?"

"Also in custody."

"Then who?"

Marcus showed him the login.

It belonged to a senior Aurelia executive.

A man who had spoken during Ethan's board call less than an hour earlier.

Ethan recognized the name.

He had known him for fifteen years.

Marcus whispered, "He knows we found the archive."

Then Ethan's phone buzzed.

A message from that same executive appeared.

COME TO HEADQUARTERS BEFORE YOU DESTROY THIS COMPANY.

Below it was another sentence.

COME ALONE, OR I RELEASE EMMA'S RECORDS.

May you like

Ethan stared at the screen.

And then a file containing his daughter's private information began uploading...
