Chapter 13 - Vanessa's Last Demand

Marcus killed the connection before the upload completed.

The executive was Harold Vance, Aurelia Atlantic's chief administrative officer.

He had spent fifteen years presenting himself as the cautious adult in every room.

He had also supervised the corporate partnership division when Daniel's scheme began.

The final layer.

Not mastermind.

Facilitator.

Harold had discovered the misconduct and used it.

Certain executives received hidden travel.

Certain negotiations disappeared from internal review.

When Laura's investigation threatened exposure, Harold helped Charles suppress it.

He had never needed to alter records personally.

Other people did that.

His hands stayed clean.

Until tonight.

Threatening Emma changed everything.

Federal investigators obtained a warrant.

Harold was arrested before Ethan reached the hotel.

The threatened records never became public.

For the first time all day, Ethan felt the pressure ease.

Then Vanessa's phone rang.

Her board.

She listened.

"No."

She hung up.

Ethan looked at her.

"What?"

"They want me to say Daniel acted alone."

Ethan gave a humorless smile.

"That was fast."

"They'll reinstate me if I cooperate."

"And?"

"I said no."

The Vanessa Sinclair who had entered Flight 217 would have protected her position.

This Vanessa looked exhausted, stripped of certainty.

"What happens now?" she asked.

"Investigations."

"To my father."

"Yes."

"To me?"

"If evidence leads there."

She nodded.

No special treatment.

That was the point.

No seat purchased by influence.

No record altered because someone mattered more.

No truth changed to protect a contract.

The next morning, Emma decided she wanted to fly.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"If we drive, it'll take forever."

Ethan smiled.

"Fair argument."

Aurelia offered a private charter.

He refused.

They would fly commercially.

Two ordinary tickets.

Together.

Marcus arranged nothing except ensuring their reservation could not be touched.

At the airport, cameras waited.

Ethan disliked it.

Emma held his hand.

Vanessa arrived separately to meet investigators.

Reporters surrounded her.

One shouted, "Do you regret losing the Sinclair contract?"

Vanessa stopped.

"The contract isn't what I regret."

She looked toward Ethan and Emma.

Then continued inside.

No performance.

No dramatic reconciliation.

Just consequences.

At security, Noah was waiting.

He had been cleared to return to work but chose not to.

"I'm resigning."

Ethan frowned.

"Why?"

"I got another offer."

"Where?"

"Passenger safety compliance."

Marcus had recruited him.

Ethan smiled.

"Good."

Noah looked embarrassed.

"I almost stayed quiet."

"But you didn't."

"I want to be the person who speaks sooner next time."

"Then remember how this felt."

Noah nodded.

Claire was also cooperating with investigators.

Robert had been terminated for falsifying Ethan's consent record.

Claire's future remained undecided because she had participated but later provided evidence.

Ethan refused to interfere.

Due process mattered most when anger made shortcuts tempting.

Their replacement flight boarded at noon.

Emma stopped before first class.

Their seats were 4A and 4B.

Not 1A.

Ethan had chosen them intentionally.

"Why not the front?"

Emma asked.

"Because these were available."

She grinned.

"That's how seats work."

"Apparently."

They laughed.

It felt good.

Then an airline employee approached.

"Mr. Walker?"

Ethan stiffened.

"Yes?"

"There's something for you."

A sealed envelope.

No sender.

Security inspected it first.

Safe.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Ethan recognized Adrian Cole's writing from the evidence.

LAURA ASKED ME ONE THING IF SHE COULDN'T FINISH THIS.

Below it:

MAKE SURE ETHAN KNOWS WHY SHE CHOSE 1B.

Ethan stared.

Again.

1B.

The password.

The seat beside him.

He turned the paper over.

Nothing.

Emma leaned against him.

"What does it mean?"

"I don't know."

Marcus called Adrian through investigators.

Adrian agreed to explain.

Laura had met him shortly before her death.

She told him she feared the investigation was consuming her.

She worried Ethan would eventually learn what she had hidden and believe she trusted strangers more than her husband.

She didn't.

She was trying to protect him.

"She said Ethan always chooses the aisle," Adrian explained.

Ethan smiled through sudden tears.

True.

Laura loved windows.

He preferred aisle seats.

"So when I asked where she'd hide the final key, she said, '1B.'"

"Why?"

Adrian paused.

"Because wherever Ethan sits, that's where I sit. Beside him."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Three years of grief entered one breath.

Emma squeezed his hand.

"Mom was talking about us."

"Yeah."

"She wanted us together."

"Always."

Boarding began.

For the first time, Ethan thought perhaps this story might finally be ending.

Then Marcus called.

"Ethan, don't board."

His voice was urgent.

"Why?"

"We found something in Harold Vance's office."

"What?"

"A sealed letter from Laura."

Ethan's heartbeat accelerated.

"What does it say?"

"We haven't opened it."

"Why not?"

"Because it's addressed to you."

Ethan looked at the aircraft door.

Then at Emma.

Marcus continued.

"And Ethan?"

"Yes?"

"The envelope is dated the day Laura died."

Ethan stopped moving.

A courier was already running toward Gate Twelve.

He carried the letter in his hand.

And written across the front were five words:

ETHAN — BEFORE YOU TRUST THEM...
