Chapter 10 - The File Marked 1A

Claire's face collapsed.

"That's my sister."

Nobody moved.

"What?" Ethan asked.

Claire stared at the phone.

"My sister, Rachel."

Rachel Donovan had once worked for Sinclair Global.

Vanessa remembered the name.

"Legal compliance."

Claire nodded.

"She disappeared two years ago."

"Disappeared?"

"She quit. Cut off contact."

Margaret whispered, "She didn't quit."

Rachel had been another whistleblower.

After Laura's death, Rachel tried to continue the investigation.

Daniel discovered her.

Instead of exposing him, Rachel had eventually begun working with Adrian.

Claire had known none of it.

Until now.

Daniel's call disconnected.

Security rushed Gate Twelve.

Ethan stayed with Emma despite every instinct telling him to move.

Ten minutes later, Marcus called.

"We have Daniel."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Rachel?"

"Gone."

"Adrian?"

"Gone."

"Mercer?"

"No sign."

Daniel had surrendered with a second drive.

The final ledger was not there.

Rachel had taken it.

Daniel confessed.

Not because he became noble.

Because the walls had finally closed around him.

He admitted building the original travel manipulation system.

Charles Sinclair had discovered parts of it and concealed them.

Owen Mercer had performed illegal edits under pressure.

Adrian exposed him.

Laura discovered the broader system.

After Laura died, Daniel continued.

Then Adrian faked his death because Daniel threatened him.

Rachel joined Adrian.

Mercer wanted revenge against all of them.

Every person carried a different piece of guilt.

Ethan refused the simple version where one monster explained everything.

Life was rarely that convenient.

The airline announced Flight 217 was canceled.

Passengers would be rebooked.

News had already reached social media.

Videos of Vanessa demanding Ethan's seat spread online.

Nobody yet knew Ethan's role.

That would not last.

A reporter identified Marcus.

Another recognized Vanessa.

The story grew.

Vanessa's board suspended her pending review.

She accepted it without protest.

Robert was suspended.

Claire was removed from duty pending investigation.

Noah was placed on paid leave as a protected witness.

Ethan asked Marcus to make sure Noah was not punished for speaking.

"Already done."

"What about Robert?"

"Investigation."

"Claire?"

"Same."

"No shortcuts."

Marcus nodded.

That mattered to Ethan.

Accountability could not become revenge.

Emma slept against his shoulder while the airport descended into controlled chaos.

Ethan looked at her face.

All of this because he refused to let a false record stand.

No.

That wasn't true.

All of this had existed already.

The seat merely exposed the crack.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Rachel Donovan.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE LEDGER.

Ethan showed Marcus immediately.

"No."

"I wasn't planning to go alone."

"Good."

A second message arrived.

BRING EMMA'S SKETCHBOOK.

Ethan's expression changed.

Why?

He opened the sketchbook.

Page after page of drawings.

Plane.

Passengers.

Vanessa.

Claire.

Robert.

The maintenance worker.

Then he found something he had overlooked.

A man reflected in the airplane window.

Adrian.

Emma had drawn him before anyone knew he was there.

Beside Adrian was a sequence of numbers.

"What are these?"

Emma woke slowly.

"The numbers on his paper."

"You saw his paper?"

"He was holding it."

Ethan showed Marcus.

The sequence resembled a storage reference.

Gate 12.

Locker 18.

Security opened locker 18.

Inside was a paper file.

Not a drive.

Not encrypted.

Physical records.

The cover read:

1A.

Ethan opened it.

The first page was his reservation.

The second was Laura's Flight 608 record.

The third was Emma's birth certificate.

Ethan stopped.

"Why is this here?"

Marcus read over his shoulder.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Then Ethan noticed a handwritten notation.

LW / EW / PROTECTED LINK.

Laura had created a legal trust for Emma shortly before her death.

Ethan knew that.

But the file referenced something else.

A whistleblower archive.

Laura had placed a copy of her evidence inside a trust controlled for Emma.

It would become accessible when Emma turned eighteen.

Unless a triggering event occurred first.

One triggering event was unauthorized modification of Emma's travel identity.

That had happened this morning.

Laura had designed a dead-man switch around her daughter's protected identity.

Ethan stared in disbelief.

Laura had been preparing for the possibility that the corruption survived her.

She had never told him.

Perhaps she intended to.

Perhaps the accident took away the chance.

Marcus whispered, "The system sent the alert when Robert removed Emma's parent association."

That was why everything escalated.

Robert's unethical attempt to accommodate Vanessa accidentally triggered Laura's hidden archive.

Somewhere, an evidence package had been released.

"To whom?" Ethan asked.

Marcus checked.

The answer appeared.

Federal transportation investigators.

Independent counsel.

And Ethan.

His phone chimed.

New secure file.

LAURA WALKER — FINAL ARCHIVE.

Ethan's eyes burned.

He opened it.

One sentence appeared.

ETHAN, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, SOMEONE CHANGED EMMA'S RECORD.

Below it:

DO NOT TRUST THE FIRST LEDGER.

Ethan froze.

Marcus leaned closer.

A second line loaded.

THE REAL LEDGER IS NOT DIGITAL.

Then a third.

I HID IT WHERE EMMA WOULD ALWAYS BE SAFE.

Ethan looked at his sleeping daughter.

His mind raced.

Home?

School?

A trust?

Then Emma opened her eyes.

"Dad?"

He showed her Laura's message without explaining the danger.

"Where did Mom say you'd always be safe?"

Emma thought.

Then her face changed.

"Inside the blue book."

"What blue book?"

"The one Mom made me promise never to throw away."

Ethan knew exactly where it was.

At home.

On Emma's bedroom shelf.

Then his security system sent an alert.

FRONT DOOR OPENED.

Nobody was supposed to be there.

Ethan opened the live camera.

A figure walked through his house.

Then the figure turned toward Emma's bedroom...
