Chapter 7 - The Face Behind The Betrayal

The hidden room went silent.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The only sound was the slow turning of the door handle above us.

Someone was inside the house.

Someone who knew exactly where we were.

Olivia raised her weapon.

Daniel stepped closer to the stairs.

Sabrina looked at me with fear in her eyes.

But I wasn't afraid anymore.

Not the way I used to be.

A week ago, I was a woman planning her wedding.

A woman who believed love meant safety.

A woman who trusted every person closest to her.

Now I was standing in a secret room beneath my father's house, holding evidence that could destroy the man who tried to destroy me.

I had already lost everything.

There was nothing left for Ethan to take.

The hidden door above us opened.

Footsteps moved across the floor.

Slow.

Careful.

The person wasn't searching.

They already knew.

"They're coming down," Daniel whispered.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from above.

"Genevieve."

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not Ethan.

Not Claire.

Someone else.

Someone who had been part of my life long before this nightmare began.

Olivia looked at me.

"You know who that is?"

I couldn't answer.

Because my mind was already trying to deny it.

The secret door opened.

A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

The emergency light from the hallway revealed her face.

My breath disappeared.

"Mom?"

The woman standing there looked older.

Tired.

Broken.

But there was no mistake.

It was my mother.

The woman I buried five years ago.

The woman everyone told me had died with my father.

The woman I had mourned.

The woman I thought I had lost forever.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"Genevieve."

I stepped backward.

"No."

My voice cracked.

"No, this isn't possible."

My mother slowly walked down the stairs.

"I wanted to tell you."

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn't process anything anymore.

"You wanted to tell me?"

I looked around the hidden room.

"After five years?"

She stopped.

"I was trying to protect you."

The anger inside me exploded.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

My voice echoed through the room.

"Everyone says they were protecting me."

I pointed toward the files.

"The truth is, everyone was protecting themselves."

My mother looked down.

And that reaction hurt more than any answer.

Because she knew I was right.

"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"

She closed her eyes.

"Because Ethan believed I was dead too."

The room became quiet.

"What?"

My mother looked at Daniel.

Then Sabrina.

Then me.

"Ethan was responsible for what happened to your father."

I already knew that.

But hearing it from her made it real.

"He tried to kill me too."

My hands tightened.

"Why?"

"Because I found out the truth."

She walked toward the files.

"Your father and I discovered Ethan wasn't working alone."

My heart sank.

"Claire?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Sabrina?"

Again, she shook her head.

"No."

I felt a cold feeling move through me.

"Then who?"

My mother looked at the photograph in my hand.

The one with Ethan, Claire, Sabrina, and the unknown person.

"The person behind Ethan was someone who had access to everything."

She touched the photograph.

"Someone who knew your family."

Someone who knew my family.

My mind raced.

A person close enough to manipulate everything.

Close enough to know my father's secrets.

Close enough to know my life.

Then my mother said:

"The person who introduced Ethan to you..."

She stopped.

My stomach tightened.

"...was your uncle."

The room went completely silent.

My uncle.

My father's brother.

The man who comforted me after my father's death.

The man who helped manage the family company.

The man who told me Ethan was the perfect person for me.

"No."

My mother nodded.

"Yes."

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Because he knew.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

My mother continued.

"Your uncle didn't want your father's money."

"Then what did he want?"

She looked at the files.

"Control."

I opened another folder.

Inside were financial records.

Transfers.

Contracts.

And one document that made my hands shake.

A marriage agreement.

Between Ethan and Sabrina.

But the date was wrong.

It was signed before Ethan ever met me.

Before my engagement.

Before the attack.

The entire wedding was a lie.

I wasn't the bride.

I was the obstacle.

My mother saw the paper.

"That's why he chose you."

I looked up.

"Why?"

"Because your father left everything to you."

The room went quiet.

I stared at her.

"What?"

"Your father's final will."

Daniel handed me another file.

I opened it.

The words blurred.

My father had left the company.

The properties.

The entire family fortune.

To me.

Not my uncle.

Not Ethan.

Me.

But there was something else.

A condition.

I read it carefully.

If Genevieve is ever placed under pressure to transfer ownership, all assets will immediately be frozen until an independent investigation is completed.

I looked at Daniel.

"So Ethan couldn't take anything from me."

"No."

"Unless..."

My mother finished the sentence.

"Unless he made you disappear."

The truth finally connected.

The attack wasn't about my face.

It wasn't about Sabrina.

It wasn't even about the wedding.

It was about ownership.

Ethan wanted me gone.

Because I was the only thing standing between him and everything my father built.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked at me.

I didn't have my phone.

The sound came from the old computer in the corner of the room.

A notification appeared.

One new file.

Uploaded remotely.

The screen turned on.

A video began playing.

Ethan appeared.

This time, he wasn't angry.

He was smiling.

"Genevieve."

I stared at the screen.

"I knew you would find the room."

Olivia stepped closer.

"How is he accessing this?"

Nobody answered.

Ethan continued.

"You always were your father's daughter."

He leaned closer to the camera.

"But there is one thing you still don't know."

My breathing slowed.

"What?"

Ethan smiled.

"Your father didn't hide the evidence from me."

A pause.

"He hid it from you."

The screen changed.

A new document appeared.

My father's signature.

My name.

And a date.

The date was three days before my father's death.

Ethan's voice continued.

"Ask your mother what happened that night."

I turned slowly.

My mother's face had gone pale.

Because she knew exactly what he was talking about.

"Mom?"

She didn't answer.

"Mom, what happened?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered the words that made everyone freeze.

"I was the one who called Ethan that night..."

The lights suddenly went out.

The computer screen disappeared.

May you like

And from somewhere above us, a second voice whispered:

"She was the reason your father died."
