Chapter 6 - The Day I Turned His Lie Against Him

"Genevieve will never know that I was the one who..."

The video stopped.

The screen froze.

The woman’s face remained visible for only a second before the hospital monitor went black again.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in that room knew exactly what we had just seen.

The woman in the video was Claire.

My best friend.

The person who held my hand when I cried.

The person who helped me choose my wedding flowers.

The person who sat beside me after the attack and promised she would find whoever did this to me.

She had been there.

Not after.

Not by accident.

Before.

My mind refused to accept it.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

Not because I didn't believe it.

Because I did.

And that was worse.

Claire was the last person I wanted to suspect.

Because suspecting Ethan had been painful.

But suspecting Claire felt like losing the last piece of my old life.

Sabrina looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

I turned toward her.

"Don't."

She stopped.

"Don't apologize for something you didn't do."

My voice was shaking.

"I spent years believing I knew the people around me."

I looked at the frozen screen.

"I was wrong every single time."

Olivia stepped closer.

"Genevieve, we need to move."

I looked at her.

"Where?"

"Somewhere Ethan can't reach."

I almost smiled.

"Does a place like that exist?"

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

Ethan Walker had spent years building a world where he controlled everything.

Money.

Information.

People.

Maybe even my own memories.

Daniel walked toward the door.

"We need to leave before he sends someone."

I looked at him.

"You knew Claire was involved."

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

"You knew."

Daniel looked away.

"Not completely."

"That's not an answer."

He sighed.

"I suspected."

The anger inside me rose.

"You all suspected."

My voice became louder.

"My father suspected."

"Sabrina suspected."

"You suspected."

"Olivia knew something."

"And everyone decided I was safer not knowing."

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

They all made the same choice.

They protected me by keeping me in the dark.

And the darkness was exactly where Ethan wanted me.

I grabbed the memory drive from Olivia.

"No more secrets."

She looked at me.

"Genevieve..."

"No."

I held the drive tightly.

"No more people deciding what I can handle."

The room went quiet.

"I was the one attacked."

"I was the one betrayed."

"I was the one who lost everything."

I looked at every person standing there.

"So I get to know the truth."

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

We left the hospital through a private exit twenty minutes later.

Olivia had arranged a car.

No cameras.

No security.

No hospital records.

For the first time in days, I was outside.

But freedom didn't feel the way I imagined.

The city looked exactly the same.

People walked on sidewalks.

Cars passed by.

Everyone continued living normal lives.

While mine had been destroyed in one night.

I sat in the back seat staring out the window.

"Where are we going?"

Olivia looked at me through the mirror.

"Your father's old house."

I froze.

"My father's house was sold."

"That's what everyone thinks."

I turned toward her.

"What?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she drove.

The further we went, the more familiar the streets became.

Memories returned.

My father taking me for ice cream.

My mother planting flowers outside.

Family dinners.

A life before Ethan.

A life before betrayal.

When we arrived, the house was hidden behind tall trees.

Old.

Empty.

Forgotten.

But still standing.

Daniel unlocked the front door.

The moment I stepped inside, my chest tightened.

Everything felt frozen in time.

The furniture.

The paintings.

The photographs.

My father's presence was everywhere.

I walked slowly through the hallway.

Then I saw it.

A picture frame.

My father and me.

I picked it up.

There was something strange.

The frame was heavier than it should be.

I turned it over.

A small hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a key.

And a note.

My hands trembled as I unfolded it.

Genevieve,

If Ethan ever finds out about this place, it means I failed.

But if you are reading this...

you finally know the truth.

I stopped.

My eyes filled.

My father knew this day might come.

I continued reading.

The person you trust most will be the person who hurts you first.

But the person you fear most may not be your enemy.

I looked at Sabrina.

She looked confused.

Even she didn't know.

Below the message was one final sentence.

Find the room beneath the house.

I looked up.

"There's a room beneath this house?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Your father built it."

"Why?"

"Because he knew Ethan was coming."

The key in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

We searched the house.

Behind an old bookshelf in my father's office, we found a hidden lock.

The key fit perfectly.

The bookshelf moved.

A staircase appeared.

Leading underground.

Nobody spoke.

We went down.

The room below was small.

But filled with files.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Evidence.

Everything my father had collected.

Everything Ethan tried to erase.

Olivia picked up one folder.

"This is it."

"What?"

"The original investigation."

I opened it.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Transactions.

Then I saw Ethan's name.

Not once.

Hundreds of times.

But there was something else.

A photograph.

Ethan.

Claire.

Sabrina.

And another person.

Someone standing beside them.

Someone I recognized immediately.

My breath stopped.

Because that person was the reason Ethan entered my life.

The reason he chose me.

The reason my father died.

I looked closer.

A handwritten note was attached to the picture.

My father's handwriting.

Only six words.

The person behind everything is...

I couldn't finish reading.

Because upstairs, above us, the front door opened.

Footsteps entered the house.

Slow.

Calm.

Like whoever had arrived knew exactly where we were.

Olivia turned off the light.

Daniel whispered:

"Nobody move."

The footsteps came closer.

Closer.

Then stopped directly above the hidden room.

A voice spoke from the hallway.

A voice I knew.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

"Genevieve..."

The secret door handle slowly began to turn.

May you like

And the person outside whispered:

"I know you're down there."
