Chapter 4 - The Evidence Hidden Beneath The Betrayal

The hospital door opened.
And standing outside was the person who wasn't supposed to be alive.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
For several seconds, my mind refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
The woman standing in the doorway looked older than the photograph.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was thinner.
But I knew her.
I had seen that face before.
Not in my memories.
Not in my dreams.
On the news.
Five years earlier.
The woman everyone believed had died in a car accident.
The woman my father had spent his final months investigating.
The woman whose name appeared in every hidden file I found after his death.
"Sabrina..."
The name left my mouth as a whisper.
The woman looked at me.
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"I knew you would find out eventually."
Olivia immediately stepped between us.
"Don't move."
Sabrina stopped.
She looked at Olivia.
Then back at me.
"I didn't come here to hurt her."
I almost laughed.
Everyone said that.
Everyone who lied.
Everyone who betrayed me.
They always arrived with the same sentence.
I didn't come here to hurt you.
But somehow, I was always the one bleeding.
"You were with Ethan," I said.
Sabrina looked down.
"Yes."
"You helped him."
A long silence.
Then she answered.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised me.
No excuses.
No fake tears.
No pretending.
Just one word.
Yes.
My anger rose.
"You watched him destroy my life."
"I tried to stop him."
"You tried?"
My voice cracked.
"You were in the picture."
Sabrina looked at the photograph in my hand.
The photograph of her standing beside my father.
The photograph that had brought her back from the dead.
"You don't understand what that picture means."
"Then explain."
She looked toward Olivia.
"Can we close the door first?"
Olivia didn't move.
But after a moment, she locked it.
The room suddenly felt like a courtroom.
Three people.
Three different versions of the truth.
And I was stuck between them.
Sabrina walked closer but kept her distance.
"My real name is not Sabrina Cole."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"That was the name Ethan gave me."
My eyebrows tightened.
"What does that mean?"
She looked at me.
"It means Ethan has been creating identities for people for years."
The words made no sense.
"Ethan?"
She nodded.
"Your fiancé wasn't looking for love when he found you."
My chest tightened.
"He was looking for revenge."
The room became silent.
I thought about every moment I met Ethan.
The first time.
The first conversation.
The first time he told me he felt like he had known me forever.
I thought it was romantic.
Now it felt planned.
"Why me?"
Sabrina looked at the floor.
"Because of your father."
My heart sank.
"My father?"
She nodded.
"Your father discovered what Ethan was doing."
"What was he doing?"
Sabrina looked at Olivia.
Then at me.
"Your father was investigating a company called Whitmore Holdings."
My blood froze.
My family company.
The company my father built.
The company that collapsed after his death.
"The official story was that the company failed because of bad investments," Sabrina continued.
"But your father knew someone inside was stealing money."
"Ethan?"
She nodded.
"He wasn't just your fiancé."
"He was the person who destroyed your family."
I felt like the room was spinning.
"No."
The word came out automatically.
Because accepting it meant accepting that my entire life had been a lie.
"My father would have told me."
Sabrina's expression changed.
"He tried."
She reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
My father's handwriting.
Again.
I stared at it.
"Where did you get that?"
"He gave it to me before he died."
My hands trembled.
"You knew my father?"
Sabrina nodded.
"He found me when I was trying to escape Ethan."
Escape.
That word stood out.
"What did Ethan do to you?"
Sabrina looked away.
"Exactly what he planned to do to you."
The room went cold.
"He destroys people who get in his way."
I looked at the bandages covering my face.
The pain suddenly felt different.
Not physical.
Something deeper.
"He wanted me to disappear."
Sabrina nodded.
"But he made one mistake."
"What?"
"He underestimated you."
I looked at her.
For the first time, I didn't see an enemy.
I saw someone who had also been trapped.
But I wasn't ready to forgive.
Not yet.
"Why did you let him marry me?"
Sabrina closed her eyes.
"Because I thought I could protect you by staying close."
"And did it work?"
Her silence answered.
No.
I turned away.
Everything was too much.
The wedding.
The attack.
Claire.
Ethan.
My father.
A woman who was supposed to be dead.
My life had become a mystery I never wanted to solve.
Olivia stepped forward.
"We need to leave."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because Ethan knows someone accessed his files."
My heart stopped.
"How?"
She looked at the second phone.
"The message you received wasn't meant to help you."
I stared.
"Then what was it?"
"A warning."
"From who?"
Olivia looked at Sabrina.
And Sabrina whispered:
"From Ethan."
A cold wave moved through me.
"No."
Sabrina nodded.
"He wanted you to see the truth."
"Why?"
"Because he knows you will come looking for him."
I didn't understand.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does if you understand Ethan."
Sabrina looked toward the locked door.
"He never destroys people immediately."
She lowered her voice.
"He likes watching them discover the truth slowly."
The monitor beside my bed suddenly flickered.
All three of us looked at it.
The screen turned black.
Then a video appeared.
A camera feed.
My hospital room.
Live.
My stomach dropped.
Someone was watching us.
Olivia grabbed the monitor cable.
"Impossible."
The video continued.
A man appeared on the screen.
Sitting in a dark office.
Smiling.
Ethan.
I felt my entire body freeze.
He looked directly into the camera.
Like he knew I was watching.
Then he spoke.
"Genevieve."
His voice came through the hospital speakers.
"I know you're awake."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Ethan leaned closer to the camera.
"And I know Sabrina is with you."
Sabrina stepped back.
Fear crossed her face.
Then Ethan smiled.
"But there's something neither of you knows."
The screen changed.
A new image appeared.
A document.
A signature.
My father's name.
My eyes widened.
Because below my father's signature was another name.
A name I recognized.
A name that made Olivia whisper:
"No..."
I looked at the screen.
And Ethan's voice returned.
"Your father didn't die trying to expose me."
The video paused.
The hospital room went silent.
Then Ethan said:
"He died because he discovered who was really helping me."
The screen went black.
And at that exact moment, someone knocked on the hospital door.
Three slow knocks.
Olivia reached for her weapon.
Sabrina stopped breathing.
I stared at the handle.
May you like
It slowly began to turn.
And the person outside whispered my name...
