Chapter 9 - The Truth That Was Waiting Before I Met Him

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

I stared at the photograph in my hands.

The room around me disappeared.

The voices.

The security officers.

The tension between Leo and Victoria.

Everything faded into the background.

Because the woman in the picture was me.

Not the Clara Rossi everyone knew.

Not the wife of a powerful man.

Not the woman wearing expensive dresses and living behind security walls.

Just me.

Six years younger.

Standing beside Adrian Vale.

Smiling.

A smile I barely recognized.

On the back of the photograph were the words:

You have always been part of this.

My fingers tightened around the picture.

“No.”

The word came out as a whisper.

Because my mind rejected what my eyes were seeing.

I had never met Adrian.

That was what I believed.

That was what Leo believed.

That was what everyone believed.

But the photograph said otherwise.

Leo stepped closer.

“Clara.”

I looked up.

His face was different.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You knew?”

The question came out before I could stop it.

Leo froze.

“No.”

I searched his eyes.

And for once, I believed him.

Because Leo was many things.

A liar when he thought he was protecting someone.

A man who kept secrets because he believed he had to.

But this?

This shocked him as much as me.

“Then why is there a picture of me with Adrian?”

Nobody answered.

Victoria watched silently.

Almost patiently.

Like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.

“You really don’t remember.”

I turned toward her.

“What?”

She tilted her head.

“Adrian told me you wouldn’t.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria walked slowly around the desk.

“Six years ago, before Leo became your husband, before this house, before the Rossi name was part of your life…”

She looked at the photograph.

“You were involved in something much bigger than you knew.”

I looked at Leo.

He immediately shook his head.

“Don’t listen to her.”

Victoria smiled.

“Still protecting her.”

Leo’s expression hardened.

“Stop.”

“No.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You spent years hiding the truth from her.”

She looked at me.

“I’m just the person finally telling her.”

I hated that part of me wondered if she was right.

Because everyone had been protecting me.

Leo.

Adrian.

Even people I thought were my enemies.

Everyone decided what I could handle.

Everyone decided what I should know.

And I was tired of being the last person to understand my own life.

“What happened six years ago?”

Silence.

Then Leo spoke.

“I don’t know everything.”

I looked at him.

That surprised me.

“You don’t?”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“But I know enough.”

“Then tell me.”

His jaw tightened.

“It started before I met you.”

“Where?”

“New York.”

The answer confused me.

“I lived in Chicago.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Leo looked at the photograph.

“Because Adrian was investigating someone.”

“Who?”

His eyes moved toward Victoria.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

The first real emotion she had shown all night.

“Victoria.”

The room went quiet.

Leo continued.

“Adrian discovered that someone had been moving money through multiple companies connected to Rossi Harbor Logistics.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“And you believed him?”

“Yes.”

“You always did.”

Leo ignored her.

“He followed the money.”

“And found what?”

Leo looked at me.

“He found a connection to you.”

My heart stopped.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It didn’t make sense to Adrian either.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You weren’t the target.”

Everyone looked at her.

“You were the key.”

I felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at the photograph.

“Your father.”

The room became silent.

I hadn’t heard that word connected to this story.

Not once.

“My father?”

Leo looked at me carefully.

“Clara…”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“Don’t.”

Because suddenly, something inside me was breaking.

My father had died when I was young.

At least that was what I had always been told.

My family history had always been simple.

Painful.

But simple.

Victoria continued.

“Your father worked with people who handled Rossi family finances before Leo took control.”

I stared.

“No.”

“He found evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Her expression turned serious.

“The original crime that built the Rossi empire.”

Nobody spoke.

Even Leo looked stunned.

“My father?”

Victoria nodded.

“He wanted to expose it.”

“And?”

“He disappeared.”

The room felt colder.

My knees felt weak.

“No.”

I looked at Leo.

“Did you know this?”

His silence hurt.

Not because he was guilty.

Because he was searching for answers too.

“I knew your father was connected to Adrian’s investigation.”

I swallowed.

“But you didn’t tell me.”

“I didn’t know if it was true.”

“You could have asked me.”

“You didn’t remember.”

The words stopped me.

“What?”

Leo looked devastated.

“Adrian discovered something before he died.”

A pause.

“He believed someone had erased parts of your memory.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

Maya, who had been silent until then, stepped closer.

“Clara.”

Her voice was gentle.

“Do you remember the accident?”

I frowned.

“What accident?”

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

“What accident?”

Leo looked at me.

“Six years ago.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Exactly.”

The room became silent.

Because suddenly the impossible started making sense.

The photograph.

Adrian.

The missing pieces.

The feeling that something about my own life was unfamiliar.

Victoria whispered:

“Someone didn’t just hide the truth from you.”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“They removed it.”

I felt dizzy.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

“No.”

Leo immediately moved toward me.

“Clara.”

I pulled away.

Not because I didn’t want him.

Because I didn’t know what was real anymore.

“My entire life…”

My voice shook.

“My memories…”

Leo looked at me with pain in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Those words hurt.

Because Leo Rossi was apologizing.

Not defending.

Not explaining.

Just apologizing.

“What happened to Adrian?”

Leo looked down.

“He tried to find the truth.”

“And?”

“He got too close.”

I looked at the photograph.

The smiling faces.

Three people who knew something I didn’t.

Then I noticed something.

A detail I hadn’t seen before.

A building in the background.

A sign.

A location.

I recognized it.

My breath stopped.

“I know that place.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

I pointed at the photograph.

“That building.”

Leo stepped closer.

“Where is it?”

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Then something happened.

A memory.

Not a thought.

Not an idea.

A memory.

A red door.

Rain.

A man shouting.

Adrian’s voice.

My own voice crying.

I grabbed my head.

Images flashed.

A conversation.

A folder.

A promise.

“Clara!”

Leo caught me before I fell.

I heard him calling my name.

But I was somewhere else.

Six years ago.

Before the wedding.

Before the mansion.

Before everything.

Adrian standing in front of me.

Handing me something.

Saying:

“Never trust anyone who tells you they’re protecting you.”

I opened my eyes.

Leo was holding me.

And suddenly, the irony was impossible to ignore.

The first person who protected me had been Adrian.

The second was Leo.

And both had hidden the truth.

I looked at Leo.

“Adrian knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew I would forget.”

“Yes.”

“Then why leave the message?”

Leo’s eyes filled with something I had never seen.

Regret.

“Because he knew one day you would remember.”

I looked back at Victoria.

She was no longer smiling.

Because something had changed.

She wasn’t in control anymore.

The truth was.

I looked at the photograph one more time.

Then at Leo.

“I want everything.”

He nodded.

“You’ll have it.”

“No more secrets.”

“No more.”

“Even if it hurts?”

His answer came immediately.

“Especially then.”

For the first time that night, I believed him.

Not because he was my husband.

Not because I loved him.

Because finally…

He stopped trying to protect me from the truth.

The security alarm continued in the background.

Victoria stood surrounded by guards.

The enemy inside the Rossi empire had been exposed.

But I knew one thing.

This was never just about Leo’s company.

Never just about Adrian.

Never just about a betrayal.

This was about my life.

My memories.

My past.

And the truth that someone had spent six years trying to bury.

I looked at Leo.

The man who had locked me inside a room.

The man who had opened every door afterward.

And I realized something.

A locked door had once made me believe he was my enemy.

But the real enemy had been the person who convinced me I didn’t need to know what was behind it.

Because the truth was finally here.

May you like

And this time…

Nobody could lock it away from me again.
