Chapter 8 - The Door That Finally Opened

The alarm sounded for exactly seventeen seconds.
But seventeen seconds was enough to change everything.
The entire Rossi estate transformed in an instant.
The quiet luxury disappeared.
The soft lights became emergency signals.
The beautiful home I once admired became a fortress preparing for war.
Security officers moved through the halls.
Doors locked.
Cameras turned.
Every person inside the estate became a possible threat.
And for the first time in my life, I understood why Leo lived the way he did.
The constant security.
The locked systems.
The careful planning.
The endless suspicion.
It wasn’t because he enjoyed control.
It was because he had spent years knowing that one wrong decision could destroy everything.
Including me.
Leo stood beside me, holding my hand.
Not tightly.
Not like before.
Not like the night he stopped me from leaving.
This time, he wasn’t holding me back.
He was making sure I knew I wasn’t facing this alone.
“Stay with me,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
A few hours ago, those words would have sounded like an order.
Tonight, they sounded like a request.
“I’m not running.”
His eyes softened slightly.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
I looked toward the hallway.
“You still think I’m the woman who needs to be protected.”
A pause.
Then Leo shook his head.
“No.”
The answer surprised me.
“I think you’re the woman who should have been standing beside me from the beginning.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Because that was the apology I had been waiting for.
Not an excuse.
Not a justification.
An admission.
Maya approached us with her phone in her hand.
“Security found Victoria.”
My body went still.
“Where?”
“The east wing.”
My eyebrows tightened.
“The east wing is restricted.”
Leo’s expression darkened.
“Exactly.”
“How did she get there?”
Nobody answered.
But we all knew.
Someone helped her.
Again.
Leo looked at his security team.
“Find out who authorized access.”
The officers nodded and moved quickly.
I watched them leave.
Then I looked at Leo.
“You still don’t know who else is involved.”
“No.”
“But you have an idea.”
His silence confirmed it.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
His eyes moved to mine.
I had spent years learning him.
And tonight, I finally realized something.
Leo was not difficult to read.
I had just never allowed myself to look closely enough.
“You know something.”
He looked away.
“Leo.”
A long silence.
Then he said:
“There is one possibility.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation scared me more than any name.
“Someone in my family.”
The words hit differently.
Because Victoria was betrayal.
But family?
Family was something deeper.
Something more painful.
“Your family?”
Leo nodded.
“My uncle.”
I remembered the name.
Everyone in Chicago knew the Rossi family had complicated history.
But Leo rarely spoke about relatives.
Not because he didn’t care.
Because he didn’t trust them.
“Why would he do this?”
“Because he believes the company belongs to him.”
“And you?”
Leo gave a humorless smile.
“He believes I stole it.”
Maya looked at him.
“Did he know about Adrian?”
Leo’s expression changed.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because Adrian told me he suspected him.”
The room became quiet.
“Then why didn’t you confront him?”
Leo looked at me.
“Because Adrian died before I could.”
The weight of that sentence stayed between us.
Before anyone could speak, one of the security officers returned.
His face was pale.
“Mr. Rossi.”
Leo immediately knew something was wrong.
“What?”
“We found Ms. Hale.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
The officer looked toward the hallway.
“Your office.”
Leo’s expression changed.
“Is she alone?”
“No.”
A pause.
“She has someone with her.”
Everyone went silent.
“Who?”
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“Your uncle.”
Leo froze.
For the first time all night…
I saw something close to disbelief.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Shock.
“He’s here?”
“Yes.”
“Impossible.”
The officer swallowed.
“He requested a meeting with you thirty minutes ago.”
Maya frowned.
“Thirty minutes?”
Leo looked at the security cameras.
The timeline.
Everything connected.
Victoria hadn’t broken in.
She had been waiting.
She knew exactly when to appear.
She knew Leo would come.
She knew we would find the evidence.
She wanted this confrontation.
“Why would they reveal themselves?”
I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
Because it was the right question.
People like Victoria didn’t make mistakes.
People like Leo’s uncle didn’t take unnecessary risks.
They weren’t exposing themselves.
They were creating a situation.
Leo looked at me.
And I saw it.
The realization.
“They want me to choose.”
“Choose what?”
His expression became cold.
“Between protecting my family name…”
A pause.
“…and protecting you.”
My heart tightened.
“Why?”
“Because that’s what they’ve always believed.”
Leo looked toward the office.
“They think my weakness is that I care.”
I stepped closer.
“And they’re wrong.”
His eyes met mine.
For the first time that night, we were completely aligned.
“Yes.”
A security officer approached.
“Mr. Rossi, they’re requesting you alone.”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Everyone looked at Leo.
He continued:
“She stays with me.”
I knew what that meant.
Not as a possession.
Not as someone hidden behind him.
As an equal.
Maya looked at me.
“You’re sure?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Because I was tired of being protected from the truth.
I was ready to stand inside it.
Together, we walked toward Leo’s office.
The same place where Adrian’s final message had been hidden.
The same place where secrets had been buried.
The door opened.
Victoria was standing near the desk.
She looked exactly the same as always.
Elegant.
Calm.
Beautiful.
That was the most disturbing part.
She didn’t look like a villain.
She looked like my friend.
My stomach twisted.
“Clara.”
She smiled softly.
Like we were meeting for coffee.
Not standing in the middle of a war.
“Leo told you everything?”
I stared at her.
“Not enough.”
Her smile faded slightly.
“Good.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“I always wondered if he would ever trust you.”
Leo stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Victoria ignored him.
“That was always his problem.”
She looked at me.
“He loves you.”
The words felt strange coming from her.
“But he doesn’t respect you enough to tell you the truth.”
My jaw tightened.
“You’re the one who was spying on me.”
Her expression changed.
Not guilt.
Regret.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
I almost laughed.
“By tracking me?”
“By understanding what Leo would do.”
“What does that mean?”
Victoria looked at Leo.
“He was always predictable when it came to you.”
The room became silent.
“Adrian knew it too.”
Leo’s expression darkened.
“Don’t say his name.”
Victoria smiled sadly.
“He was right about you, Leo.”
She looked back at me.
“You changed him.”
I didn’t understand.
“You make him weak.”
The words should have angered me.
Instead, they made me realize something.
Victoria never hated me because I was powerless.
She hated me because I had something she could never have.
Leo’s loyalty.
His love.
His trust.
“He chose me,” I said quietly.
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“He chose wrong.”
Then she reached into her coat.
Every security officer raised their weapons.
Leo moved in front of me.
But Victoria didn’t pull out a weapon.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
Clara.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?”
Victoria looked at me.
“The truth Adrian died trying to give you.”
Nobody moved.
Leo stared at the envelope.
“That’s impossible.”
Victoria smiled.
“No, Leo.”
She placed it on the desk.
“The impossible part was believing you could protect her forever.”
I looked at the envelope.
Another secret.
Another piece of the puzzle.
Another choice.
Victoria stepped back.
And whispered:
“Open it, Clara.”
I looked at Leo.
Then at the envelope.
Three years of marriage.
One night of betrayal.
A lifetime of unanswered questions.
Slowly, I reached forward.
And picked it up.
Because I finally understood something.
The truth had never been something Leo was hiding from me.
The truth was something everyone was afraid I would discover.
I opened the envelope.
And inside was a single photograph.
A photograph that made my entire world stop.
Because standing beside Adrian in that picture…
was me.
Six years earlier.
Before I met Leo.
Before I knew the Rossi family.
Before I knew any of this.
May you like
And on the back of the photograph were seven words.
You have always been part of this.
