Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much

“Someone who shouldn’t be alive.”
Leo’s words stayed in the room long after he stopped speaking.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to breathe.
The security monitors continued flashing in front of us, filling the dark room with cold blue light.
ACCESS ATTEMPT DETECTED.
Again.
And again.
Like someone on the other side was patiently waiting for us to react.
I looked at Leo.
Three years of marriage.
Three years of sleeping beside him.
Three years of believing I knew every important part of his life.
And yet, in one night, I discovered I had been living beside an entire world of secrets.
“Who?” I whispered.
Leo didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
“Leo.”
This time my voice was sharper.
“Who is trying to access your system?”
His jaw tightened.
Maya stepped closer to the monitor.
“Is this a name?”
Leo finally moved.
He typed several commands.
The screen changed.
A security profile appeared.
AUTHORIZED USER.
Then a name.
I watched his face.
Because before I even saw the name, I knew it mattered.
Leo Rossi did not react to ordinary threats.
He didn’t flinch at enemies.
He didn’t panic when people tried to hurt him.
But now?
Now he looked like he was seeing a ghost.
“Leo.”
He closed his eyes briefly.
Then whispered:
“Adrian.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way he said it meant everything.
Maya’s expression changed immediately.
“You’re sure?”
Leo nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Impossible.”
“I know.”
I looked between them.
“Who is Adrian?”
Neither answered.
That was when my patience disappeared.
“No.”
Both of them looked at me.
“I am done standing in rooms where everyone knows the truth except me.”
“Clara—”
“No, Leo.”
I stepped closer.
“You locked me inside a bedroom.”
I pointed toward the security screens.
“You hid a threat against me.”
I looked at Maya.
“And now both of you recognize a name that apparently changes everything.”
My voice lowered.
“I deserve to know.”
Leo looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said:
“You do.”
It was the first time that night he admitted it without arguing.
That scared me more.
Because whatever came next was something he had been trying to avoid.
“Adrian Vale,” Leo said quietly.
I waited.
Nothing.
No memory.
No recognition.
“He was my closest friend.”
The room became silent.
“Was?”
Leo looked at the screen.
“He died six years ago.”
I felt a chill.
“Died how?”
Leo’s expression hardened.
“Car accident.”
“Do you believe that?”
A pause.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
I stared at him.
“You thought your best friend was murdered?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
His eyes met mine.
“I didn’t want that world near you.”
I almost smiled.
A sad, empty smile.
“That world was already in my house.”
He looked away.
Because he knew I was right.
Maya crossed her arms.
“Adrian wasn’t just a friend.”
Leo said nothing.
I looked at her.
“What else?”
She glanced at Leo.
“Tell her.”
For once, Leo didn’t resist.
“Adrian was the only person who knew everything about Rossi Harbor Logistics.”
I frowned.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“The business?”
“More than the business.”
The way he said it made my stomach tighten.
“Leo.”
He looked exhausted.
“My family’s company was not built as cleanly as I wanted people to believe.”
I already knew the rumors.
Everyone did.
But hearing it from him was different.
“There were people before me,” he continued.
“People who used fear instead of negotiation.”
“And Adrian?”
“He helped me change it.”
I studied his face.
“You trusted him.”
“Yes.”
“More than anyone?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt.
I didn’t know why.
Maybe because I realized there was a part of Leo’s life that belonged completely to someone else.
A part I could never touch.
“What happened between you?”
Leo looked at the screen.
“The week before Adrian died, he discovered someone inside the company was selling information.”
“To competitors?”
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“To people who wanted control.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“And he found out who?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Leo didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Leo.”
His eyes lifted to mine.
“That’s the problem.”
“What?”
“He never told me.”
I frowned.
“But you said he discovered them.”
“He did.”
“Then why didn’t he tell you?”
Leo looked at the security screen.
“Because before he could…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“He died.”
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavy.
Then the monitor changed.
A new file opened by itself.
Everyone turned.
A video.
Timestamp.
Six years earlier.
Leo went completely still.
“No.”
Maya looked at him.
“What?”
“That file was deleted.”
The video started.
A man appeared on the screen.
I didn’t know him.
But I knew immediately this was Adrian.
He looked younger than Leo.
Less guarded.
He sat in a dark office, facing the camera.
His expression was serious.
Almost afraid.
“If you’re watching this…”
He paused.
“Then something happened.”
Leo stepped closer.
The room disappeared around him.
Because he wasn’t looking at a screen.
He was looking at a dead friend.
Adrian continued.
“Leo, if this reaches you, do not trust the people closest to you.”
My eyes moved to Leo.
The same words.
The same warning.
The person closest.
Adrian continued.
“I found the person who has been leaking information.”
The video glitched.
Then returned.
“And it’s not who you think.”
Leo’s face changed.
Like he already knew what was coming.
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
“The person responsible has access to your home.”
My breath caught.
Home.
Not company.
Not business.
Home.
The video continued.
“They know your wife.”
My heart stopped.
My wife.
Those words echoed.
Leo looked at me.
For the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Guilt.
Deep, painful guilt.
Adrian continued.
“They will use Clara to get to you.”
The room went completely silent.
I felt Leo’s eyes on me.
But I couldn’t look at him.
Because suddenly I understood.
The dress.
The gala.
The locked door.
The fear.
It had never been random.
Someone had planned this.
Someone had been watching me.
The video froze.
Then a final message appeared.
FILE TERMINATED.
Maya stared.
“How did this activate?”
Leo didn’t answer.
He walked toward the computer.
His fingers moved quickly.
Then stopped.
“What?”
I asked.
He looked at the screen.
“The file was accessed from inside the house.”
My blood went cold.
Again.
Inside.
Always inside.
Maya looked around.
“Who has been in this room?”
Leo didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
Security officers checked the hallway.
Nothing.
No movement.
No forced entry.
No obvious sign of an intruder.
Then one of the officers returned.
“Mr. Rossi.”
Leo turned.
“What?”
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“We found something.”
“What?”
The man held out a small object.
A USB drive.
I recognized it immediately.
Because it wasn’t hidden somewhere complicated.
It was sitting on the desk.
In plain sight.
Like someone wanted us to find it.
Leo took it.
His expression changed.
“Where was this?”
The officer hesitated.
“Your private office.”
Leo stared.
“My office?”
“Yes.”
Maya looked at him.
“Who has access?”
Leo didn’t answer.
Because suddenly everyone knew.
The person who had access wasn’t a stranger.
The person wasn’t breaking into the Rossi estate.
They were already part of it.
I looked at Leo.
“Open it.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
The answer surprised me.
“Why?”
“Because if this is what I think it is…”
He looked at me.
“…then whoever left it wanted us to find it.”
I stared at the USB drive.
A message from someone who should have been dead.
A warning from a friend who had trusted no one.
A threat hidden inside my husband’s home.
And a question I couldn’t stop asking myself.
If Adrian had warned Leo about someone close…
Why did Leo still refuse to say the one name he was afraid of?
Because I was beginning to understand something.
The enemy inside the Rossi empire wasn’t hiding from Leo.
They were hiding behind him.
May you like
And somehow…
They had been waiting for me to discover the truth.
