Chapter 6 - The Choice Between Love and Betrayal

The USB drive sat on the table between us like a weapon.
Nobody touched it.
Not Leo.
Not Maya.
Not even the security officers standing nearby.
Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.
Whatever was inside that drive had been left there for a reason.
It wasn’t an accident.
It wasn’t forgotten.
Someone wanted us to find it.
The question was why.
I looked at Leo.
The man who had spent the entire night trying to protect me from a danger I didn’t understand.
The man who had locked me away.
The man who had lied to me.
And somehow…
The man who looked more afraid of what I would discover than what might happen to him.
“Open it.”
My voice broke the silence.
Leo immediately shook his head.
“No.”
I stared at him.
“No?”
“Clara.”
“You don’t get to say no anymore.”
The words came out colder than I expected.
But they were true.
Not because I wanted to punish him.
Because I was exhausted.
Exhausted from being the last person to know what was happening in my own life.
Leo looked at me.
“I’m trying to keep you safe.”
“And I’m trying to understand why my safety requires everyone else knowing the truth except me.”
His expression tightened.
“Because information can be dangerous.”
I stepped closer.
“So can ignorance.”
That stopped him.
Maya watched the two of us silently.
She had always been good at reading people.
And right now, I knew she was reading Leo.
Not as a businessman.
Not as a powerful figure.
As a husband.
A husband who had made a decision without asking the person most affected by it.
Finally, Maya spoke.
“Leo.”
He looked at her.
“If Adrian left that drive, he wanted Clara to see it.”
Leo’s eyes darkened.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
“Because if he wanted only you to have it, he would have hidden it somewhere only you could access.”
She pointed toward the table.
“But he left it in your private office.”
A pause.
“Where she would eventually find it.”
Leo looked away.
Because deep down, he knew she was right.
Adrian had always understood him.
Maybe better than anyone.
The thought bothered me.
Not because I was jealous of a dead man.
Because I realized someone else had spent years knowing my husband in ways I never had.
“Open it,” Maya repeated.
Leo remained silent.
Then he picked up the drive.
For a moment, his fingers tightened around it.
Almost like he was afraid.
Not of the file.
Of the consequences.
He connected it to the secure computer.
The screen went black.
Then a password request appeared.
Leo typed.
Denied.
He frowned.
Tried again.
Denied.
“That’s impossible.”
Maya leaned closer.
“What?”
“Adrian used this system.”
“Maybe he changed it.”
“No.”
Leo stared at the screen.
“He knew I would try.”
The words unsettled me.
“He expected you to fail?”
Leo didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at me.
“He expected me to need help.”
The screen suddenly changed.
A new message appeared.
VERIFY THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST.
Everyone went silent.
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Leo didn’t move.
Maya looked at him.
“Adrian’s security questions were always personal.”
Leo nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“Personal how?”
Leo stared at the message.
Then said:
“He didn’t trust passwords.”
A pause.
“He trusted memories.”
The computer displayed three questions.
Question one:
What was the first thing Clara Rossi said to you when you met?
I froze.
The room became strangely quiet.
Because the answer was something only Leo and I knew.
Our first meeting.
Three years before our wedding.
A charity event.
I had spilled champagne on his suit.
Everyone around me had been terrified.
But Leo had laughed.
A real laugh.
The first one I ever heard.
“You remember?”
I looked at him.
His eyes softened.
“You asked if I was going to send you a bill.”
Despite everything, I almost smiled.
“And you said?”
“That you owed me dinner instead.”
The computer beeped.
Correct.
Question two appeared.
What did Clara fear admitting to you?
My smile disappeared.
That wasn’t a memory.
That was something deeper.
Something private.
Leo looked at me.
I looked away.
Because I knew.
And he knew.
The answer was not something I had ever said directly.
“I’ll answer.”
Leo frowned.
“Clara.”
“No.”
I stepped toward the computer.
“I’m tired of hiding from my own story.”
I typed.
That she was afraid she would lose herself by loving someone like you.
The screen paused.
Then:
Correct.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth was suddenly sitting in front of all of us.
Even Leo.
Especially Leo.
The final question appeared.
And this one changed everything.
Who does Clara trust more than herself?
I stared.
My first thought was obvious.
Maya.
But something stopped me.
Because Adrian wasn’t asking who protected me.
He was asking who I trusted.
And suddenly I remembered something.
A conversation from months ago.
Someone asking questions.
Too many questions.
Where I was going.
Who I was meeting.
What I planned to wear.
At the time, I thought it was kindness.
Concern.
Friendship.
Now…
I wasn’t sure.
Leo watched my face.
“Clara?”
I whispered the name.
And the entire room changed.
Because everyone knew it.
Everyone understood.
The answer.
The person.
The betrayal.
I typed.
The computer accepted.
Correct.
A folder opened.
Inside were dozens of files.
Photos.
Documents.
Security records.
My name appeared on several of them.
CLARA ROSSI.
My hands went cold.
Leo immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
But I clicked.
The first file opened.
A photograph.
Me leaving a restaurant.
Another.
Me entering a store.
Another.
Me standing outside our house.
Dates.
Times.
Locations.
Someone had been tracking me.
Not for days.
Not for weeks.
Months.
I looked at Leo.
“You knew?”
His face changed.
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
“I knew someone was monitoring you.”
“Not who.”
“No.”
“Not how long.”
“No.”
I laughed softly.
It hurt.
“Three years.”
Leo looked at me.
“What?”
“I’ve been married to you for three years.”
My voice shook.
“And the entire time, I was surrounded by people watching me.”
His expression broke.
“I was trying to find them.”
“But you never told me.”
“Because I was afraid.”
The confession surprised me.
Leo Rossi admitting fear.
“What were you afraid of?”
His answer was quiet.
“That if I told you the truth, you would look at everyone differently.”
I stared at him.
“I already do.”
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t take them back.
The next file opened automatically.
A video.
A woman appeared.
I knew her immediately.
My heart stopped.
Because she was smiling.
The same smile I had seen hundreds of times.
The same voice that had told me:
“You deserve happiness, Clara.”
The same person who had helped me choose the crimson dress.
The same person who knew about the gala.
The same person who knew everything about my life.
Maya whispered:
“No.”
Leo’s expression became dangerous.
Because he finally saw the truth.
The betrayal wasn’t coming from an enemy.
It wasn’t coming from someone outside.
It was coming from someone I invited into my life.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who knew exactly how to reach me.
The video started.
Her voice filled the room.
“Leo thinks he can protect her.”
She smiled.
“But he still doesn’t understand.”
A pause.
“He never understood that Clara was always the key.”
My blood ran cold.
Leo stepped toward the screen.
The woman continued.
“And when Clara finally learns the truth…”
She looked directly into the camera.
“…she’ll choose me over him.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the question was no longer who betrayed us.
We knew.
The question was worse.
Why?
Why had someone I loved been secretly watching me?
Why had someone I trusted turned my life into a carefully planned game?
I looked at Leo.
And for the first time that night, I didn’t see a powerful man.
I saw a husband who had been fighting a war alone.
But I also saw the man who kept me outside the battle.
A man who loved me.
A man who lied to me.
And now I had to decide something.
Could I forgive the person who tried to protect me by controlling me?
Or was the betrayal too deep to overcome?
Because the truth was finally out.
The enemy was inside the Rossi empire.
But the most painful discovery was this:
May you like
The person who wanted to destroy my life…
was someone I once called family.
