Chapter 7 - The Life We Chose

The first thing I did when I saw my father standing outside our home was stop breathing.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I had spent so many years imagining that moment.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined finally getting the answers I deserved.

But I never imagined simply seeing him alive would hurt this much.

The man standing in front of me looked older than the person I remembered.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of regret.

But his eyes were the same.

The eyes of the father who used to carry me when I fell asleep on the couch.

The father who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The father who promised me that nothing bad would ever happen to me.

And then disappeared.

Cassian stood behind me.

Silent.

Giving me the choice.

For the first time in days, maybe years, he wasn't deciding what I should know.

He wasn't protecting me from the truth.

He was letting me face it.

My father looked at me.

"Elena."

Hearing my name from him broke something inside me.

I wanted to run toward him.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to ask why.

Why he left.

Why he let me believe he was dead.

Why he allowed me to grow up thinking I wasn't worth staying for.

Instead, I stood there.

Frozen.

"You were alive."

My voice sounded smaller than I expected.

My father lowered his head.

"Yes."

"All these years?"

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

I felt tears forming.

"Do you know what that did to me?"

His eyes filled with pain.

"Every day."

I looked away.

Because I didn't want him to see how much it hurt.

"I thought you abandoned me."

"I know."

"Then why?"

My father looked at Cassian.

Then back at me.

"Because the people who wanted us gone were watching you."

I shook my head.

"You could have told me."

"I tried."

That surprised me.

"What?"

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small box.

An old wooden box.

The kind my father used to keep important things in.

He handed it to me.

"I sent letters."

I opened it.

Inside were dozens of envelopes.

All with my name.

All unopened.

My hands started shaking.

"Why didn't I get these?"

Cassian answered quietly.

"Because someone intercepted them."

I looked at him.

Another secret.

Another piece of the puzzle.

My father nodded.

"After my disappearance, someone inside our family controlled everything."

He looked at Cassian.

"Lorenzo was not the only person involved."

The room became quiet.

"But the person who betrayed us was someone even closer."

I already knew.

The contract.

The signature.

The truth hidden for decades.

Cassian's father.

The man who had built an empire.

The man who raised Cassian.

The man who taught him power.

My father continued.

"Cassian's father wanted control over both families."

Cassian looked down.

"He created a war between us."

My father nodded.

"He wanted your family's resources and my family's connections."

I understood.

The attack wasn't about revenge.

It was about greed.

Years of manipulation.

Years of people using innocent lives as pieces on a board.

"But Cassian saved me?"

My father looked at him.

"Yes."

Cassian finally spoke.

"I was young."

His voice was quiet.

"I didn't know how to fix everything."

He looked at me.

"But I knew I couldn't let them take you."

My eyes filled.

"The night my family disappeared..."

Cassian nodded.

"I found you."

A memory came back.

A boy.

A dark road.

A hand holding mine.

A voice telling me not to cry.

I had forgotten.

But my heart remembered.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Cassian looked away.

"Because every time I tried, I remembered what my silence had protected."

I waited.

"The people who wanted you gone believed you were just a child who knew nothing."

He swallowed.

"I kept you hidden."

I whispered:

"Even from yourself."

"Yes."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I stepped toward him.

Not because everything was suddenly okay.

It wasn't.

Trust didn't return in one second.

Pain didn't disappear because the truth was finally spoken.

But I understood something.

Cassian's secret was not born from cruelty.

It was born from fear.

The same fear that had controlled all of us.

The fear of losing someone.

Months passed after that night.

The world eventually learned the truth.

The livestream that was meant to destroy me became the evidence that exposed everyone involved.

The men who attacked me were arrested.

The people who helped them were investigated.

The hidden financial records connected to Cassian's father were released.

For years, powerful people had believed they were untouchable.

They were wrong.

But Cassian was different after everything ended.

The man who once carried every burden alone finally allowed others to stand beside him.

Including me.

Especially me.

He never asked me to forget.

He never asked me to forgive quickly.

He simply stayed.

Every day.

And that mattered more than any apology.

One year later, I stood in the garden outside our home.

The same home where I once wondered if I truly belonged.

The same place where I discovered the truth.

But now it felt different.

Peaceful.

My hair had grown back.

The scars from that night had faded.

Not disappeared.

Just faded.

Some things remain part of you.

But they don't have to control you.

Cassian walked toward me.

No suit.

No intimidating expression.

Just my husband.

The man who loved me before the world knew his name.

"You look happy."

I smiled.

"I am."

He stopped beside me.

"Are you sure?"

I looked at him.

Years ago, that question would have hurt.

Now it made me smile.

Because Cassian still needed reassurance.

The strongest man I knew still needed to know he was loved.

"Yes."

I took his hand.

"I'm finally living the life everyone tried to take from me."

His eyes softened.

"And me?"

I squeezed his hand.

"You were the person who helped me find it."

For years, everyone believed the Voss name represented fear.

Power.

Control.

But I learned something different.

A name doesn't decide who you are.

Your choices do.

My father became part of my life again.

Not the way it was before.

But better.

Because this time there were no secrets.

No lies.

Only honesty.

Cassian and I rebuilt everything.

Not the empire.

Not the reputation.

Our family.

The night they tried to destroy me became the night I discovered the truth.

The night I learned that even the darkest secrets could finally come into the light.

And the woman who once sat on a cold marble floor while thousands watched her fall...

stood years later surrounded by the people who loved her.

Not because she was powerful.

Not because of her husband's name.

But because she survived.

Because she chose to keep going.

Because she finally understood that her story was never about what was taken from her.

It was about everything she found afterward.

Cassian wrapped his arms around me as the sun disappeared behind the garden.

For the first time in my life, I didn't wonder what tomorrow would bring.

I wasn't waiting for another betrayal.

Another secret.

Another loss.

I was home.

May you like

And I was loved.

THE END
