Chapter 1 - The Livestream

A woman’s hair fell onto the black marble floor as she whispered:
"Please stop..."
When Cassian Voss arrived at the abandoned Riverside Hotel, he found a broken livestream phone recording his wife’s humiliation.
But beneath the phone case was a hidden message scratched into the metal:
"She was never the target."
Cassian finally understood this wasn't about revenge.
The first lock of my hair landed on the floor at exactly 9:17 p.m.
I remember the sound more than anything else.
Not the laughter.
Not the camera clicking.
Not the cruel comments flooding the livestream.
Just the quiet sound of my own hair hitting the cold black marble beneath me.
I sat beneath the broken chandelier of the abandoned Riverside Hotel with my wrists tied behind my back. The white cord cut into my skin every time I moved. My black dress, the one Cassian had given me on our anniversary, was covered in dust and dirt.
The woman I had been that morning felt like a stranger.
My name was Elena Marlowe.
And that night, thousands of people watched someone try to erase me.
"Smile for the camera," the man holding the phone said.
His name was Adrian Vale.
I knew him.
Not personally.
But I knew his family.
The Vales had spent years trying to challenge Cassian's influence. They hated that he had built an empire nobody could control. They hated that I was the only person who could make the most feared man in the city look human.
Adrian leaned closer with the electric clippers in his hand.
"Everyone wants to see the great Elena Marlowe fall."
The comments on the livestream moved faster than I could read.
People laughed.
People insulted me.
People demanded more.
I closed my eyes.
I refused to give them tears.
That was the one thing they couldn't take.
My dignity.
The first cut had already taken half of my hair.
The second cut reached the side of my head.
I heard one of the men behind me laughing.
"Imagine Cassian seeing this."
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Because they knew exactly what they were doing.
They didn't just want to hurt me.
They wanted him to suffer.
Cassian Voss had enemies everywhere. Powerful men feared him because he never begged, never surrendered, and never forgot betrayal.
But they had misunderstood one thing.
They thought hurting me would weaken him.
They didn't know I was the reason he still had something worth protecting.
Adrian grabbed another section of my hair.
"This is going viral."
The phone screen reflected in his eyes.
Thousands of viewers.
Thousands of strangers watching my nightmare.
Then something changed.
A sound came from the entrance.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Confident.
The laughter stopped.
Everyone turned.
I didn't need to look.
I knew that walk.
I had heard it a thousand times before.
Cassian.
He stood in the doorway wearing a black suit, his expression completely calm.
That was what scared people most about him.
Not anger.
Not shouting.
Control.
The room became silent.
Adrian lowered the clippers.
"Cassian..."
My husband looked at him.
Then he looked at me.
His eyes moved to my shaved hair.
The rope around my wrists.
The phone recording everything.
For a second, I saw something behind his cold expression.
Pain.
Pure, impossible pain.
But it disappeared instantly.
Cassian walked forward.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
"You had one chance," he said quietly.
Adrian tried to laugh.
"You think you're going to scare us?"
Cassian stopped beside me.
He reached down and carefully touched my face.
Not my hair.
Not the damage.
Me.
"I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner."
Those words almost broke me.
Because Cassian Voss apologized to nobody.
Ever.
The men around us suddenly looked less confident.
They realized too late that the game had changed.
Cassian looked at the livestream phone.
"Turn it off."
Nobody moved.
Then one of the attackers reached for something inside his jacket.
Cassian noticed.
Everyone noticed.
May you like
But nobody knew what he was reaching for.
Until the door behind him suddenly opened, and a familiar voice called his name...
