Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Silence

The first thing I noticed after Cassian arrived was that nobody laughed anymore.
The same men who had spent the last hour treating my pain like entertainment suddenly couldn't look me in the eyes.
The phone recording the livestream was still pointed at us.
The comments were still moving.
But the atmosphere had changed.
Because they finally understood something I had known from the beginning.
Cassian Voss did not need to raise his voice to be dangerous.
He only needed to stand there.
The man reaching inside his jacket slowly froze when Cassian looked at him.
"Take your hand out."
Cassian's voice was quiet.
Almost gentle.
That made it worse.
The attacker swallowed and slowly pulled his empty hand away.
Cassian didn't even look surprised.
He had already predicted every move before it happened.
That was how he survived.
That was how he built everything.
He studied people.
Their fears.
Their weaknesses.
Their mistakes.
And tonight, everyone in that abandoned hotel had made the biggest mistake of their lives.
They thought I was powerless.
They thought the woman sitting on the floor with her hair falling around her was just someone they could break.
They never understood that I was the person who knew the man standing in front of them better than anyone.
I knew the man behind the reputation.
The world knew Cassian Voss as a ruthless businessman.
A man who could destroy companies with a single phone call.
A man whose enemies disappeared from negotiations before they even began.
But I knew the truth.
Cassian was the man who remembered how I liked my coffee.
The man who secretly repaired the old necklace my mother gave me.
The man who stayed awake beside my hospital bed when I was sick and pretended he wasn't afraid.
They saw a monster.
I saw my husband.
And watching him stare at the people who hurt me made my heart ache more than the pain in my wrists.
Because I knew what came next.
Cassian wasn't angry because they embarrassed him.
He was angry because they touched me.
"Who ordered this?" he asked.
Nobody answered.
Adrian forced a smile.
"You think we're scared because you walked in wearing a nice suit?"
Cassian turned his eyes toward him.
The smile disappeared from Adrian's face.
"You made a mistake."
Adrian laughed nervously.
"Is that supposed to scare me?"
Cassian stepped closer.
"No."
He looked at the phone recording everything.
"It's supposed to warn you."
A strange silence filled the room.
Then Cassian reached down and picked up the livestream phone.
The screen showed my face.
My damaged hair.
My tied hands.
Thousands of comments.
Thousands of people watching.
His jaw tightened.
For the first time that night, I saw him lose control.
Not completely.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
"How long?"
Adrian looked confused.
"What?"
"How long was she on this stream?"
Nobody answered.
Cassian looked at the phone screen.
"Three hours."
His voice became colder.
"Three hours and nobody stopped it."
I lowered my eyes.
I hated that he saw me like this.
Not because I was ashamed.
Because I knew what it did to him.
"Cassian..."
He immediately turned toward me.
The coldness disappeared.
"I'm here."
Two words.
Simple.
But they were the only words I needed.
He crouched down and carefully cut through the cord around my wrists with a small knife he carried.
His hands were steady.
Mine weren't.
When the rope fell away, I realized how badly my fingers were shaking.
Cassian noticed.
Of course he noticed.
He always noticed everything.
He removed his jacket and placed it around my shoulders.
The warmth almost made me cry.
Not because I was weak.
Because for the first time that night, I felt safe.
But before I could say anything, a woman's voice echoed through the hotel.
"Cassian."
Everyone turned.
A woman stood near the entrance.
She was dressed in a dark coat, her face pale.
I recognized her.
Mara.
Cassian's private investigator.
She never appeared unless something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Cassian stood.
"What happened?"
Mara looked at me.
Then at the men surrounding us.
Then back at Cassian.
"We found the person who leaked the location."
The room went silent.
Adrian's expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Mara continued.
"And it wasn't one of them."
Cassian stared at her.
"Who was it?"
Mara hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
Because Mara was never afraid of delivering bad news.
Never.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.
"The person who sent them the information knew your security system."
Cassian took the envelope.
"Impossible."
Mara shook her head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"Not impossible."
My stomach tightened.
I felt Cassian's hand move toward mine.
A silent reminder that I wasn't alone.
Mara continued.
"They knew your private schedule."
She paused.
"They knew Elena would be alone."
The room became colder.
Because suddenly this wasn't just an attack.
It was planned.
Someone had studied us.
Someone close enough to know our lives.
Cassian opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Shock.
Real shock.
"What is it?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Cassian."
Still nothing.
Mara looked away.
Like she already knew what was coming.
I slowly stood despite the pain.
"What are you hiding from me?"
Cassian looked at the photograph again.
Then he looked at me.
And for the first time since he walked through that door...
I saw fear in his eyes.
Not for himself.
For me.
"Elena..."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
The photograph slipped slightly from his hand.
Because written on the back was a name neither of us had heard in years.
A name that should have been impossible.
May you like
A name that meant someone from Cassian's past had returned.
And then the lights inside the abandoned hotel suddenly went out.
