Chapter 5 - The Truth Beneath the Name

The first thing I saw was my own name written on a document that should not have existed.
Not Elena Marlowe.
My old name.
The one I buried years ago.
The one Cassian promised nobody would ever use against me.
My fingers trembled as I held the paper.
The abandoned hotel disappeared around me.
The broken windows.
The attackers.
The livestream.
Everything faded.
Because suddenly, the secret was no longer about someone trying to destroy Cassian.
It was about the possibility that my entire life with him had been built on something I never knew.
I looked at Cassian.
"Tell me this isn't true."
He didn't answer.
And that silence hurt more than any lie.
The person standing on the staircase watched us carefully.
They weren't smiling anymore.
They weren't angry.
They looked almost sorry.
Almost.
"I never wanted you to find out this way, Elena."
My eyes moved back to the document.
The first sentence was still burned into my mind.
Before Cassian Voss became the man everyone fears...
I looked up.
"What does this mean?"
Cassian stepped forward.
"Elena."
His voice was low.
A warning.
A plea.
I had spent years believing I knew everything about him.
The dangerous parts.
The painful parts.
The things he didn't talk about.
But I had never imagined there was an entire version of him that existed before me.
A version he had hidden.
"How long were you planning to keep this from me?"
Cassian looked away.
That was the answer.
Too long.
The person on the stairs spoke again.
"He didn't hide one mistake."
They walked down another step.
"He hid an entire life."
Mara immediately moved between us.
"Enough."
The person stopped.
"You still protect him?"
Mara's expression changed.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
A bitter laugh escaped.
"I know exactly what I'm talking about."
Cassian's eyes became colder.
"Leave."
The person looked at him.
"You still think you can control every room you enter."
They pointed toward me.
"But not this one."
My heart tightened.
Because they were right about one thing.
Cassian could control enemies.
Business deals.
Entire organizations.
But he couldn't control what I felt.
Not anymore.
I looked at him.
"Who were you before I met you?"
The question hung between us.
Cassian didn't answer immediately.
Then he said something I never expected.
"Someone I hated."
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
Cassian slowly walked toward the broken window.
"When my father died, I inherited nothing."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"I inherited his enemies."
The photograph in his hand shook slightly.
"My family was destroyed from the inside."
I listened.
Because this was the first time Cassian had ever opened that door.
The door he kept locked for everyone.
Including me.
"My uncle Lorenzo wanted everything my father built."
Cassian continued.
"He believed I was too young. Too emotional. Too weak."
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"So he tried to remove me."
I felt my chest tighten.
"What happened?"
Cassian looked at me.
"I survived."
Two words.
But they carried years of pain.
"I disappeared."
The person behind us remained silent.
Even they listened.
"I created another identity. Another network. Another life."
Cassian's eyes lowered.
"Nobody knew where I was."
I slowly looked at the document.
"Except someone did."
Cassian nodded.
"Yes."
The truth started forming.
The attack.
The livestream.
The photographs.
The betrayal.
Someone wasn't trying to destroy the current Cassian.
They were trying to expose the old one.
The person from his past.
The person he buried.
"But why involve me?"
My voice cracked.
That was the question hurting me most.
Not the secret.
Not the lies.
Me.
Why me?
Cassian walked toward me.
"Because they knew the only thing I couldn't lose."
I looked at him.
He stopped.
"you."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The person on the stairs looked away.
Like even they understood that.
But then they said something that destroyed the moment.
"That's exactly why they chose her."
Cassian turned.
"What did you say?"
"They didn't choose Elena because she's your weakness."
A pause.
"They chose her because she's the only person who can destroy you."
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
The person slowly removed a small drive from their pocket.
"This."
They held it up.
"Contains everything."
Cassian's expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
The person smiled slightly.
"From the same place Lorenzo hid the truth."
Cassian stepped forward.
"Give it to me."
"No."
The person looked at me.
"She deserves to see it first."
Mara moved.
But Cassian stopped her.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
His eyes stayed on the drive.
Then on me.
"If she wants the truth..."
He swallowed.
"...she gets the truth."
I don't know what hurt more.
The secrets.
Or the fact that he was finally willing to let me see them.
The person connected the drive to a small laptop they carried.
The screen flickered.
A video file appeared.
Created twelve years earlier.
My heart started beating faster.
Cassian stood beside me.
But he looked like a man preparing to face a ghost.
The video opened.
The screen showed a younger Cassian.
Different.
No expensive suit.
No cold expression.
No empire.
Just a young man standing in front of a house.
A house I recognized.
My childhood home.
I stopped breathing.
"No..."
Cassian looked at me.
"Elena..."
I stared at the screen.
The video continued.
A younger version of myself appeared.
A little girl.
Holding my mother's hand.
I felt dizzy.
Because I remembered that day.
The day my family disappeared from my life.
The day I was told never to ask questions.
The day everything changed.
The person beside me whispered:
"Now you understand."
I looked at Cassian.
"You knew me before."
His silence answered.
My heart shattered.
"You knew who I was."
Cassian closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The room became completely silent.
All the lies.
All the secrets.
Everything led to this moment.
"Why?"
My voice barely came out.
Cassian looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw him completely broken.
"Because I was there the night your family was destroyed."
I stepped back.
The words didn't make sense.
They couldn't.
The man I loved.
The man who protected me.
The man who saved me tonight.
Had been there on the worst night of my life.
Before I could speak, the laptop screen suddenly changed.
A new file appeared.
One that none of them had opened.
The title was simple.
But it made Cassian's face lose all color.
May you like
"Elena's Father Was Never Dead."
And then the video started playing.
