Chapter 7 - The Father I Never Knew

The phone kept ringing.

Dad.

The name on my screen felt like a stranger's name.

Because the man I had called Dad my entire life was standing in the room with me.

And the man calling me was someone else.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Someone I had never known existed.

Nobody spoke.

My mother looked at the phone.

Then at me.

Her face told me she already knew.

She knew who was calling.

She knew why.

I answered.

But I couldn't say anything.

For several seconds, neither could he.

Then a man's voice came through.

A voice older than the one in my memories.

A voice carrying years of regret.

"Emily?"

My eyes filled with tears.

Not because I missed him.

How could I miss someone I never knew?

I cried because a stranger had just said my name like he had been waiting his entire life to say it.

"Who are you?"

The silence on the other end was painful.

Then he answered.

"My name is Michael Ross."

My heart stopped.

Ross.

My last name before marriage.

The name I had given up when I became Emily Whitaker.

The name that belonged to a life I thought was simple.

"Where are you?"

My voice was barely a whisper.

"Close."

I looked at Andrew.

He immediately understood.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Emily, don't."

I turned away from him.

"Why?"

Andrew looked at the phone.

"Because whoever this man is, he has been hiding for twenty years."

I tightened my grip.

"And everyone else has been hiding too."

Nobody could argue.

Because that was the truth.

Michael spoke again.

"I know you're angry."

I almost laughed.

Angry.

That word was too small.

"My entire life is different from what I thought it was."

"I know."

"You knew about me?"

A pause.

"Every day."

The answer hurt.

Not because he had watched me.

Because he had been alive.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every moment when I wondered why my family looked incomplete.

He was somewhere.

Alive.

"You let me believe you were dead."

His voice broke.

"I didn't have a choice."

"Everyone says that."

I looked at my mother.

At Andrew.

At the people who had made decisions about my life.

"Everyone always says they didn't have a choice."

Michael was quiet.

Then he said:

"I wanted to come back."

"Why didn't you?"

Another silence.

Then:

"Because the people who came after me would have found you."

My stomach tightened.

"The Bennetts?"

"Yes."

The room became colder.

Michael continued.

"Claire Bennett isn't the person you need to fear most."

I closed my eyes.

I was tired of hearing that.

Every secret led to another secret.

Every answer created another question.

"Then who?"

His voice lowered.

"Her father."

Andrew immediately looked toward the window.

My mother whispered:

"No."

Michael heard her.

"She's there, isn't she?"

Nobody answered.

"She knows the truth."

My mother started crying.

"Michael, please."

The pain in her voice was different.

Not fear.

Regret.

Michael continued.

"Emily needs to know everything."

I sat down.

"Then tell me."

Nobody stopped me.

Not my mother.

Not Andrew.

Not even the man who had raised me.

I needed the truth.

All of it.

Michael took a deep breath.

"Your mother and I discovered the Bennett family's illegal operations when you were a baby."

I listened.

"We found evidence that they had been laundering money through several companies. One of those companies was connected to Daniel's father."

My eyes widened.

"Daniel's father?"

"Yes."

The pieces started connecting.

The Whitakers.

The Bennetts.

The partnership.

The marriage.

Everything.

"Your father—Thomas—was working with me."

I looked at the phone.

Thomas.

The man who raised me.

The man I called Dad.

"He helped you?"

"Yes."

Michael's voice softened.

"He loved you like his own daughter."

My chest tightened.

Despite everything.

Despite the lies.

I knew that was true.

Thomas had always loved me.

But love did not erase betrayal.

"What happened?"

Michael was silent.

Then:

"The night we planned to expose them, they found out."

My mother covered her face.

"I was supposed to take you and your mother somewhere safe."

He stopped.

"What happened?"

"They found us."

The room went still.

"I was attacked."

I swallowed.

"And they told everyone I died."

Michael's voice became quieter.

"They made sure your mother believed I was gone."

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

"You thought he was dead."

She nodded.

"I searched for him."

Her voice broke.

"For years."

I felt something inside me crack.

Because suddenly my mother was not the woman who lied to me.

She was a woman who had been living with a wound she never allowed herself to show.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

My mother looked at me.

"Because every time I looked at you, I saw the same eyes."

Her tears fell.

"Your father's eyes."

I couldn't speak.

The front door suddenly shook.

Everyone turned.

Andrew moved instantly.

Someone was outside.

Again.

But this time, there was no fear in his face.

Only anger.

"Stay here."

He walked toward the door.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

Emily, please answer me.

I ignored it.

Then another message appeared.

I know who came to your mother's house.

I stared at the screen.

A third message came.

And this time, it was a photograph.

Daniel standing outside a building.

Beside him was Claire.

But they weren't fighting.

They weren't arguing.

They were looking at something together.

A file.

A document.

Something important.

I looked closer.

The building behind them.

My breath disappeared.

It was the hospital from the video.

The same hospital where I was born.

My phone rang again.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Why are you there?"

He didn't ask how I knew.

He just sighed.

"Because I finally found the last piece of the truth."

My heart raced.

"What truth?"

His voice became serious.

"The truth about why your mother disappeared."

The front door shook again.

Andrew reached for the handle.

Daniel continued.

"Emily, you need to know something."

"What?"

A pause.

Then:

"The man who raised you didn't just hide your father from you."

I held my breath.

"He hid what happened the night your real father disappeared."

The door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

May you like

"Because the person who betrayed Michael Ross was someone you trusted your entire life."

The door slowly opened.
