Chapter 3 - The Secret Daniel Tried To Bury

The person outside my mother's house knocked again.
Three slow knocks.
Not rushed.
Not angry.
Almost confident.
Like whoever stood on the other side of that door already knew I was inside.
I held my phone tightly against my ear.
"Dad," I whispered.
My father's breathing was heavy.
"Emily, listen to me carefully."
I looked toward the hallway.
My mother was standing near the kitchen, frozen in place.
She could hear the fear in my voice.
"Do not open that door."
The words should have comforted me.
Instead, they made everything worse.
Because my father had never been afraid easily.
He was the man who walked into hospitals alone when my grandmother was sick.
The man who defended me when teachers misunderstood me as a child.
The man who stood across from Daniel on my wedding day and told me I deserved someone who made me feel safe.
My father was not a man who panicked.
So if he was telling me not to open a door, I knew something was wrong.
Another knock came.
This time louder.
My mother walked toward me.
"Who is it?"
I shook my head.
"I don't know."
My phone was still connected.
My father heard her.
"Emily, take your mother and go to the back room."
"Dad, tell me what is happening."
A pause.
Then he said something that made my heart stop.
"Daniel found you."
I stared at the door.
"No."
"Emily."
"No."
I lowered my voice.
"How would he know where I am?"
My father didn't answer.
And that silence was the answer.
Because Daniel shouldn't have known.
I hadn't told him.
My mother hadn't told him.
Nobody knew.
Except...
The photograph.
The photograph of my father meeting Daniel.
My stomach tightened.
"Dad."
"What?"
"How long have you been talking to Daniel?"
The silence that followed felt heavier than anything else.
I stepped away from the hallway.
My mother looked at me.
She knew immediately.
"Emily?"
I swallowed.
"How long?"
My father finally spoke.
"Since before your wedding."
The room became completely still.
I couldn't hear the rain against the windows.
I couldn't hear my mother's breathing.
I couldn't hear anything except those words.
Since before your wedding.
I closed my eyes.
"No."
"Emily, listen—"
"No."
My voice cracked.
"You knew something about him?"
"It's not what you think."
"Then what is it?"
My father didn't answer.
Because there was no answer that could make that sentence hurt less.
I walked toward the living room window.
I moved the curtain slightly.
A black SUV was parked at the end of the driveway.
My heart dropped.
"He's here."
My father immediately became alert.
"Who?"
"Daniel."
"No."
My father sounded terrified again.
"Emily, that isn't Daniel."
I looked closer.
The driver's seat was empty.
The person standing near the front door wasn't Daniel.
It was someone else.
A man in a dark coat.
Someone I had never seen before.
My mother grabbed my arm.
"What is happening?"
I didn't know.
And that scared me more than anything.
My entire life, I thought I understood the people around me.
I thought Daniel was the biggest lie I had ever discovered.
I thought the worst pain was seeing him with Claire.
But now I was beginning to understand something.
The affair was only the surface.
There was something underneath.
Something everyone else knew except me.
The man outside knocked again.
Then my phone received another message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
Do not trust your father.
My hands started shaking.
Another message appeared.
He has been protecting Daniel's secret for years.
I looked at my father.
The man who had always told me he would protect me.
The man whose warnings about Daniel I had ignored.
The man who was apparently hiding something from me too.
"Emily."
My father's voice was softer now.
"Whatever you are thinking, stop."
I laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I didn't know what else to do.
"You keep saying that."
I looked at the phone.
"Everyone keeps telling me what not to do."
My voice became stronger.
"But nobody tells me the truth."
My father was silent.
Then he said:
"Because the truth can destroy everything."
I stared at the front door.
The words felt familiar.
Daniel had always cared about protecting everything.
His reputation.
His company.
His image.
But now I wondered if my father had been doing the same thing.
Protecting something.
Protecting someone.
Just not me.
The man outside knocked one more time.
Then he spoke.
His voice was calm.
"Emily Ross."
I froze.
Nobody called me that anymore.
Not since I married Daniel.
Not since I became Emily Whitaker.
My mother's face changed.
She recognized the voice.
That scared me.
"Mom?"
She didn't answer.
"Mom, who is that?"
Her eyes filled with fear.
Then she whispered:
"He shouldn't know that name."
I stepped back.
The stranger outside knew my old name.
The name connected to my life before Daniel.
Before the marriage.
Before everything changed.
My father spoke urgently through the phone.
"Emily, get away from the door."
But I was already moving.
Not toward it.
Away.
Because something inside me finally understood.
The person outside wasn't here because Daniel wanted to bring me home.
They were here because someone was afraid I had started asking questions.
I grabbed my mother's hand.
"We're leaving."
She nodded.
For the first time in my life, I saw fear in my mother's eyes.
Not worry.
Not concern.
Fear.
We moved toward the back door.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But then I saw the message attached to the call.
A photo.
A recent photo.
Of me.
Standing outside the restaurant the night I discovered his affair.
My breath stopped.
Someone had been watching me.
Someone had been watching long before I disappeared.
I answered.
"Daniel."
His voice came immediately.
"Emily, you need to listen to me."
I said nothing.
"Claire is not the reason you need to be afraid."
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What did you say?"
"She was never the biggest secret."
The back door was only a few steps away.
My mother reached for the handle.
Daniel continued.
"I should have told you the truth years ago."
My heart raced.
"What truth?"
His voice dropped.
"The night your father warned you about me..."
I froze.
"That wasn't the first time he tried to keep you away from me."
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
And that was when I knew.
She knew.
She knew something.
"Emily," Daniel whispered.
"Who do you think I was protecting you from?"
The back door opened.
But before we could step outside, a voice came from the darkness behind us.
A voice I had heard only once before.
The stranger from the front door.
"Because your father never told you what really happened to your family."
My mother turned around.
May you like
Her face went completely pale.
And then the stranger said the name I hadn't heard in twenty years...
