Chapter 6 - The Fall Of Daniel Whitaker

The message was still on my screen.
The baby belongs to us.
Four words.
Four words that made every breath feel heavier.
I stared at the photograph attached below it.
My mother's house.
Taken from outside.
A picture of the exact place where I was standing.
Someone was watching us.
Someone knew.
My mother grabbed my arm.
"Emily."
Her voice was shaking.
"We have to leave."
For once, I didn't argue.
For once, I didn't ask for more time.
Because I finally understood something.
The people who had spent my entire life hiding the truth from me were not doing it because they wanted power.
They were doing it because they were afraid.
And now I was afraid too.
Andrew moved quickly toward the back door.
"We need to go now."
My mother looked at him.
"You said they couldn't find us."
Andrew's face tightened.
"I was wrong."
Those three words frightened me more than anything else.
Because Andrew Bennett did not look like a man who was used to being wrong.
He looked like someone who had spent years planning every possible outcome.
And now something had happened that he never expected.
Me.
Finding out.
I grabbed my phone.
The last thing I wanted to do was call Daniel.
But I needed answers.
Not from the man I married.
From the man who knew exactly why he married me.
I called him again.
This time he answered immediately.
"Emily."
His voice sounded different.
Not confident.
Not controlled.
Afraid.
"Where are you?"
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
"I need you to listen."
"No."
My voice was cold.
"You listen."
I looked around the room.
At my mother.
At Andrew.
At the people who had kept pieces of my life hidden.
"You married me because my father asked you to."
Silence.
"Tell me I am wrong."
Nothing.
"Daniel."
Finally, he spoke.
"I never wanted to hurt you."
I closed my eyes.
That wasn't an answer.
"I didn't ask that."
My voice cracked.
"I asked if you married me because my father told you to."
A long pause.
Then:
"Yes."
The word hit harder than I expected.
I had imagined many explanations.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
A secret affair.
A lie.
But not this.
Not that my entire marriage started with a plan.
I sat down.
My legs suddenly felt weak.
"Why?"
Daniel breathed heavily.
"Because your father knew the Bennetts were looking for you."
"And you agreed?"
"I thought I could protect you."
I laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
"You keep saying that."
"Emily."
"No."
I stood again.
"You don't get to use that word anymore."
There was silence.
Because he knew exactly what I meant.
Protect.
Everyone had used that word.
My parents.
Daniel.
Andrew.
Everyone had decided they knew what was best for me.
Nobody asked what I wanted.
Nobody trusted me with the truth.
"You knew Claire."
Daniel didn't respond.
"You knew who she was before I ever met her."
"Yes."
"Did you love her?"
Another pause.
"No."
I believed him.
And somehow that hurt more.
Because the affair was not about love.
It was about something worse.
A connection.
A secret.
A purpose.
"Then why?"
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"Because Claire was trying to get close to you."
I froze.
"What?"
"She didn't start working at my firm because of me."
The room went silent.
"She started because of you."
I looked at Andrew.
He looked away.
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
"Because your son is connected to everything."
I placed a hand over my stomach.
The baby.
Our son.
The child who was supposed to be the beginning of our family.
Not the center of some hidden war.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel didn't answer.
"Daniel."
"I need you to understand something."
His voice became urgent.
"The baby was never the reason they found you."
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"They already knew where you were."
A chill moved through me.
"Then why are they after my baby?"
Daniel whispered:
"Because your son is the only thing left that proves what happened twenty years ago."
The call went silent.
I didn't know what to say.
Because suddenly my pregnancy was no longer just about becoming a mother.
It was connected to a past I never knew existed.
A past everyone had been fighting to bury.
Then I heard something on Daniel's side.
A door opening.
A voice.
A woman's voice.
Claire.
My entire body froze.
"Daniel?"
He didn't answer.
"Is Claire with you?"
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
"Yes."
My heart sank.
Even after everything.
Even after the lies.
She was still there.
"Why?"
Daniel's voice broke.
"Because she came to warn me."
I almost laughed.
"Warn you?"
"Emily, listen to me."
"No."
I felt anger replacing fear.
"You chose her."
"I didn't."
"You sat across from her in that restaurant."
"I know."
"You touched her hand."
"I know."
"You lied to my face."
His voice became quiet.
"I know."
For the first time, Daniel sounded like he finally understood the damage he had caused.
Not the damage to his reputation.
Not his company.
Me.
"I thought I could control everything."
He swallowed.
"I thought I could keep you safe without telling you the truth."
I looked at my mother.
Then Andrew.
"You were never keeping me safe."
My voice trembled.
"You were keeping me unaware."
Nobody spoke.
Because it was true.
A loud noise came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Andrew moved toward the window.
Then stopped.
His expression changed.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
That scared me.
I walked toward him.
Outside, the black SUV was still parked.
But now there was another car.
A dark sedan.
Someone had arrived.
Andrew stepped away from the window.
"We have to leave."
My mother grabbed her bag.
"Who is it?"
Andrew looked at me.
"The person Daniel was supposed to protect you from."
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Daniel.
I opened it.
Emily, I need you to trust me one last time.
Before I could respond, another message arrived.
From Claire.
Don't trust Daniel.
My hands went cold.
Then a third message appeared.
From an unknown number.
This one had no words.
Only a video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a hospital room.
A younger version of my mother.
Crying.
Holding a newborn baby.
My baby photo.
But then the camera moved.
A man stepped into the frame.
I stopped breathing.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it my entire life.
In family photographs.
At birthdays.
At holidays.
The man everyone told me was my father.
But the voice in the video said something that made my world collapse.
"Emily can never know that the man raising her is not her real father."
The video froze.
And then a final message appeared.
Your real father is alive.
I looked up.
My mother was already crying.
Andrew was staring at the screen.
May you like
And my phone started ringing from a number saved in my contacts as—
Dad.
