Chapter 5 - The Truth About Our Son

The knock on the door came again.
Three seconds of silence.
Then another knock.
This time, slower.
Like whoever stood outside knew we were listening.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not my mother.
Not Andrew.
Even my father stopped speaking through the phone.
The entire room felt frozen.
Claire Bennett's message was still on my screen.
Emily, you need to know what your husband did before I ever met him.
I stared at those words.
A part of me wanted to believe it was another manipulation.
Another lie.
Another person trying to use my pain against me.
But something inside me already knew.
Because Claire was afraid.
And people like Claire did not get afraid without a reason.
Andrew looked at the door.
Then at my mother.
"You need to leave."
My mother shook her head.
"No."
Andrew's expression hardened.
"This is exactly what I was trying to prevent."
I looked between them.
"Prevent what?"
Neither answered.
I stepped forward.
"No more."
My voice was louder than I expected.
"No more secrets."
My mother looked at me.
"Emily."
"No."
I wiped my tears.
"I spent my entire life believing I knew my family."
I pointed toward the door.
"I spent months believing I knew my husband."
My voice cracked.
"And every person I trusted knew more than me."
The room stayed silent.
"I am done being the last person to know."
Andrew looked down.
Then he nodded slowly.
"You deserve the truth."
My mother looked terrified.
"Andrew."
He ignored her.
"The night you were born wasn't the night your mother lost you."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
My mother closed her eyes.
And I knew.
There was another piece.
Another thing I had never been told.
Andrew continued.
"When you were six months old, your mother found out something about the Bennett family."
My stomach tightened.
"Claire's family?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at the photograph still sitting on the table.
The younger version of my mother.
The baby.
Me.
"What did she find out?"
Andrew looked at my mother.
She looked away.
"She discovered that the Bennett family had been hiding financial crimes for years."
I blinked.
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Everything."
The answer came from my father.
I almost forgot he was still on the phone.
I held it tighter.
"Dad."
His voice was full of regret.
"I should have told you."
"Yes."
I didn't hesitate.
"You should have."
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
"When your mother discovered what they were doing, she tried to expose them."
"Why didn't she?"
"Because they threatened her."
My mother finally spoke.
"They threatened you."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She walked toward me slowly.
"When I found the documents, I thought I could fight them."
Her voice shook.
"But then they showed me they knew where you were. They knew your school. They knew our home."
She touched my face.
"You were six months old."
I felt my anger weaken.
Not disappear.
But change.
"You left because of me?"
She nodded.
"I left because I wanted you to live."
I looked away.
All my life, I thought my mother had simply been overprotective.
I thought her warnings were excessive.
I thought my father was the paranoid one.
But they had been carrying something much bigger.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
My mother cried quietly.
"Because every time I thought about telling you, I imagined someone finding you again."
"Someone like Claire?"
She nodded.
"Someone like the people behind her."
I sat down.
My head was spinning.
Daniel.
Claire.
My father.
My mother.
Everything was connected.
But one question kept returning.
"Why was Daniel involved?"
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Daniel was not just some man who cheated.
He was connected to something that started before I met him.
Before our wedding.
Before our son.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
From Claire.
I opened it.
A file attachment.
A document.
The title made my breath stop.
Whitaker-Bennett Partnership Agreement.
I looked at Daniel's name.
Then Claire's family name.
"What is this?"
Andrew walked closer.
His face changed when he saw the screen.
"Where did you get that?"
"Claire sent it."
For the first time, Andrew looked surprised.
"She sent it?"
I nodded.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
I opened the file.
The first page was a legal agreement.
Investment partnership.
Private funding.
Confidential terms.
Then I saw the date.
Three years before my wedding.
Three years before Claire started working with Daniel.
My hands went cold.
Because Daniel had lied about something much bigger than an affair.
He didn't meet Claire recently.
He knew her family long before I ever heard her name.
I scrolled down.
And there was one signature.
Daniel Whitaker.
Then another.
Claire Bennett.
Then another.
My father's name.
I dropped the phone.
My mother covered her mouth.
"No."
I looked at her.
"You knew?"
She shook her head quickly.
"No. I didn't know about that."
"But Dad did."
Nobody spoke.
I called my father.
He answered immediately.
"Emily—"
"Did you sign a contract with Daniel and the Bennetts?"
Silence.
That was all I needed.
My chest tightened.
"You did."
My father's voice broke.
"I was trying to protect you."
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
I looked at the people around me.
"Everyone keeps destroying my life and calling it protection."
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
Then Daniel called.
I stared at his name.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the affair.
After finding out he was connected to secrets from my childhood.
I still felt something.
Not love.
Not anymore.
Something closer to disbelief.
I answered.
"What do you want?"
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Emily."
I heard something in the background.
Panic.
Movement.
"You need to come back."
I almost hung up.
Then he said:
"Claire is not who you think she is."
I closed my eyes.
"Funny."
My voice was cold.
"That is exactly what everyone keeps telling me."
"Emily, listen to me."
"No."
I looked at the photograph.
At my mother's younger face.
At the life I thought I understood.
"You knew about my family."
Daniel became quiet.
That silence was confirmation.
"You knew."
"Yes."
The word hurt more than I expected.
"How long?"
A pause.
"Before we met."
I felt my heart sink.
"You married me knowing this?"
"I was trying to protect you."
I almost laughed.
"Stop saying that."
My voice broke.
"Stop pretending you did this for me."
Daniel said nothing.
Because he knew.
Finally.
He knew I could see through him.
"Why did you marry me, Daniel?"
The silence lasted too long.
Then he whispered:
"Because your father asked me to."
I froze.
"What?"
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What did you say?"
Daniel breathed heavily.
"Your father knew the Bennetts were looking for you."
I couldn't move.
"And he thought keeping you close to me was the safest option."
My entire body went cold.
"You weren't my husband because you loved me."
"Emily..."
"You were assigned to me."
"No."
His voice became desperate.
"It wasn't like that."
But it was already too late.
Because suddenly every memory changed.
Every dinner.
Every promise.
Every "I love you."
I didn't know what was real anymore.
Then Daniel said something else.
Something that made everything stop.
"The affair with Claire wasn't the beginning."
I looked toward the door.
My mother covered her face.
Andrew went completely still.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel's voice dropped.
"The reason Claire came into my life wasn't because of me."
A pause.
Then:
"She came because she was looking for your son."
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
My baby.
My unborn child.
"Why?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, I heard a loud crash from his side of the call.
Then his voice changed.
"Emily..."
"What?"
"Lock every door."
My heart started racing.
"Why?"
A whisper.
"Because they know where you are."
The call suddenly went silent.
Then a new message appeared on my phone.
A photo.
Of my mother's house.
Taken from outside.
May you like
And beneath it were four words:
The baby belongs to us.
