Chapter 6 - The Marriage Built On A Lie

The envelope sat on the desk between us.

Nobody touched it.

Not Adrian.

Not Richard.

Not Claire.

Not me.

It was strange how something so small could make an entire room feel dangerous.

Seven years of my life were inside that envelope.

Seven years of memories.

Promises.

Photographs.

Every moment I thought I understood.

And now I was standing there wondering if any of it had been real.

I looked at Adrian.

"Open it."

His face changed.

"Emma."

"Open it."

Richard smiled.

"Interesting."

He leaned against the desk.

"Even now, she still wants the truth."

I ignored him.

My eyes stayed on my husband.

The man who had held me when I cried.

The man who told me I was the only person who believed in him.

The man who might have chosen me for a reason I never knew.

"Did you marry me because of this?"

My voice was quiet.

Adrian looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

"I asked you a question."

He swallowed.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Almost desperately.

"No, Emma. It wasn't like that."

"Then tell me what it was like."

He couldn't.

Richard watched him struggle.

"Your son was always emotional."

Adrian turned sharply.

"Stop."

Richard laughed.

"Why? Because she deserves to know?"

Claire looked at Richard.

"You are enjoying this."

Richard didn't deny it.

"Truth is painful."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"This isn't truth."

She looked at me.

"This is revenge."

The room became silent.

I looked at Claire.

"What do you mean?"

She hesitated.

Then walked closer.

"Richard didn't come here to tell you the truth."

She looked at him.

"He came here because he knows you are the only person who can take everything away from him."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Careful."

Claire ignored him.

"Emma, you need to understand something."

I waited.

"Your marriage was never supposed to happen."

The words hit harder than I expected.

I looked at Adrian.

"Explain."

He closed his eyes.

And finally sat down.

Like he had been carrying the weight for years.

"My father discovered your company records before we met."

I frowned.

"My company?"

He nodded.

"Your family's investment firm."

I stared at him.

The one my grandfather created.

The one I had inherited after his death.

The one Adrian always said was impressive.

"You knew about it."

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"And you approached me because of that?"

He looked at me.

"At first."

The honesty hurt.

More than a lie.

More than an excuse.

Because it meant he was finally telling the truth.

I stepped away.

"At first."

Adrian stood.

"Emma, listen."

"No."

I raised my hand.

"You don't get to explain your way out of this."

He stopped.

For years, I had listened.

Now it was his turn.

Richard smiled.

"Finally."

I looked at him.

"Don't pretend you are the hero."

His smile faded.

"Excuse me?"

"You are the reason all of this happened."

The room became tense.

Richard stepped closer.

"You have no idea who you are speaking to."

I looked directly at him.

"I know exactly who I am speaking to."

I pointed at the envelope.

"The man who spent years hiding behind his family name."

Then at Adrian.

"The man who destroyed his own marriage."

Then at Claire.

"The woman who lost everything because powerful people thought they could control the truth."

Nobody spoke.

Because for the first time, nobody had an answer.

I picked up the envelope.

The paper felt old.

The seal was still intact.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

One page.

Handwritten.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Adrian's.

My hands became cold.

I read the first line.

Emma, if you are reading this, it means I failed to tell you the truth myself.

I stopped.

Adrian looked down.

I continued.

The first time I met you, I knew exactly who you were.

My heart sank.

I knew your family name. I knew your company. I knew the power you had.

I looked at Adrian.

He couldn't meet my eyes.

The next sentence hurt even more.

But I did not know the woman you would become to me.

I kept reading.

My father told me to get close to you. He told me to gain your trust. He told me to marry you if necessary.

My breathing became slower.

Everything around me disappeared.

I agreed.

Three words.

Three words that destroyed seven years.

I lowered the letter.

Nobody moved.

Adrian whispered:

"Emma..."

I looked at him.

"You agreed."

His eyes filled with regret.

"Yes."

The honesty broke something inside me.

Not because I didn't expect it.

Because a small part of me still hoped I was wrong.

"You were supposed to use me."

He shook his head.

"At the beginning."

I laughed quietly.

The sound surprised even me.

"At the beginning."

I repeated his words.

"And when did it change?"

He looked at me.

"Before I realized it."

I stared at him.

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"I know it doesn't."

Richard interrupted.

"Because love doesn't erase betrayal."

I turned toward him.

"You don't get to talk about love."

His expression darkened.

I continued reading the letter.

The final paragraph was different.

The handwriting looked rushed.

Like Adrian wrote it while afraid.

But there is something you need to know. My father never wanted me to love you. He never wanted you to become my wife. He wanted something else from you. Something hidden in your family history.

I looked up.

"What?"

Adrian looked terrified.

"Emma, don't read that part."

Too late.

I continued.

Your grandfather left something behind. Something Richard has spent years searching for.

My fingers tightened.

"What did my grandfather leave?"

Nobody answered.

Then Claire whispered:

"The original ownership documents."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She nodded.

"Before Vale International existed, your grandfather funded the first company Adrian's father created."

I looked at Adrian.

"Your empire started with my family's money."

He closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Richard stepped forward.

"And that is why she was chosen."

I turned toward him.

"Chosen?"

His face remained cold.

"Your grandfather protected something before he died."

"What?"

Richard smiled slightly.

"Something that can destroy every person in this room."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I looked at Adrian.

"Did you know?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

"You knew."

"I knew there was something."

"But you married me anyway."

His eyes filled with guilt.

"I fell in love with you."

I looked away.

"That doesn't change how it started."

Before anyone could speak, the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone moved.

A chair scraped against the floor.

Then the security alarm began.

Claire grabbed my arm.

"Someone is inside."

Adrian immediately moved toward me.

Richard looked toward the hallway.

For the first time tonight, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

"What did you do?" Adrian asked.

Richard didn't answer.

A phone vibrated.

Everyone froze.

It wasn't Adrian's.

It wasn't mine.

It was Richard's.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

I watched him read the message.

Then slowly raise his eyes toward me.

"What?"

He said my name.

Quietly.

Like he had just seen a ghost.

"Emma..."

I stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

Richard turned the phone around.

May you like

The message contained only one sentence.

The woman you buried is waiting downstairs.
