Chapter 4 - The Secret Buried Beneath The Vale Name

The video froze on the screen.

The woman’s final words remained visible.

Because the person who destroyed my life is standing inside your house.

Nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Adrian.

Not Claire.

The only sound in the room was the quiet hum of the computer.

I looked at my husband.

The man who had spent years convincing me he had no secrets.

The man who had just watched a video from his missing sister.

And the man who looked terrified.

"Who is she talking about?"

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Adrian stared at the frozen screen.

"I don't know."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"You don't know?"

He looked at me.

"Emma..."

"No."

I stood up.

"You brought me into this room. You showed me the box. You let me watch that video. And now you are telling me you don't know?"

His silence answered for him.

Claire stepped forward.

"Adrian does know something."

He looked at her sharply.

"Claire."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You cannot protect him anymore."

The tension between them told me something important.

They were not just hiding the same secret.

They were hiding different pieces of it.

I looked at Claire.

"Start talking."

She glanced at Adrian.

Then at me.

"Eight years ago, Adrian's sister, Lily's mother, discovered something about the Vale family."

"What?"

Claire hesitated.

"The company wasn't built the way Adrian told everyone."

I looked at the documents scattered across the desk.

The ownership papers.

The hidden contracts.

The things I had discovered only hours earlier.

"What did she find?"

Claire lowered her voice.

"She found out that Vale International was created using money that was never supposed to belong to the family."

Adrian closed his eyes.

I turned toward him.

"Is that true?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

"Adrian."

Finally, he spoke.

"My father controlled everything."

I waited.

"He had connections. Powerful people. People who could make problems disappear."

"That doesn't answer my question."

His jaw tightened.

"My father used company funds before the company existed."

I stared at him.

"And your sister found out."

He nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Claire continued.

"She wanted to expose him."

The room became colder.

"But she disappeared."

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the part nobody wanted to explain.

I looked at the USB drive.

The video.

The missing woman.

The child.

Everything was connected.

"Where is Lily?"

Adrian looked away.

"I don't know."

"Where is your sister?"

Another silence.

This one hurt more.

Because I realized something.

Adrian had spent years searching for answers.

But he had also spent years avoiding them.

"Did you ever tell the police?"

His expression changed.

"No."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because my father stopped me."

I felt something break inside me.

Not sadness.

Disappointment.

The kind that comes when you finally see someone clearly.

"You let him control you."

Adrian looked down.

"I was twenty-nine."

"You were an adult."

"I was scared."

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn't fix anything.

Because fear had consequences.

And someone else paid the price.

Before I could respond, the computer screen suddenly went black.

The video disappeared.

I turned around.

"What happened?"

Adrian looked at the screen.

"I don't know."

Claire walked closer.

"The file was deleted."

My stomach tightened.

"No."

I checked the USB drive.

The folder was empty.

Someone had erased everything.

Someone had accessed it remotely.

Adrian immediately grabbed his phone.

"Security."

He called.

No answer.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Then his phone received a notification.

He looked at it.

And his face changed.

"What?"

I stepped closer.

"What is it?"

He turned the phone toward me.

A message.

From the security system.

Main gate accessed manually.

I frowned.

"Who entered?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because another message appeared.

Guest identity confirmed.

Then a name appeared.

I watched his fingers tighten around the phone.

"Who is it?"

He whispered.

"Someone who should be dead."

The room went silent.

Claire stepped back.

"No."

Adrian looked toward the front door.

A memory crossed his face.

A moment from eight years ago.

A moment he had tried to bury.

"Adrian," I said.

"Who?"

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him, I saw pure fear.

"My father."

I froze.

"Your father is dead."

He nodded.

"That's what everyone believes."

The sound of footsteps came from downstairs.

Slow.

Calm.

Like whoever was walking through my house already owned it.

Claire's face turned pale.

"He's here."

I looked at Adrian.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

Because the footsteps stopped directly outside the office.

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Adrian stepped in front of me.

Protecting me.

Or protecting himself.

I couldn't tell anymore.

The lock clicked.

The door slowly opened.

And a voice from the hallway said:

"Adrian."

A voice I had never heard before.

But one that made my husband lose all color in his face.

"Your mother was right."

May you like

The door opened wider.

"And Emma finally knows the truth..."
