Chapter 5 - The Man Who Returned From The Dead

The door opened completely.

A man stood in the hallway.

Older.

Calmer.

More powerful than anyone I had ever seen enter that house.

He wore a dark suit with no tie.

His silver hair was neatly combed back.

His eyes moved through the room slowly.

Not like someone entering a home.

Like someone returning to a place that belonged to him.

Adrian didn't move.

"Father."

The word came out like a warning.

The man smiled.

"After all these years, that's the first thing you say?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Adrian.

Then at the man standing in front of us.

"Your father is dead."

The man looked at me.

And smiled slightly.

"I know."

My stomach tightened.

"Then who are you?"

He stepped inside.

The security door closed behind him.

"My name is Richard Vale."

A silence followed.

Because everyone knew that name.

Adrian's father.

The founder of the Vale family empire.

The man who supposedly died eight years ago.

The man whose funeral had been attended by hundreds of people.

The man whose portrait hung in the Vale headquarters.

A dead man standing in my house.

I looked at Adrian.

His face told me everything.

He wasn't surprised.

He was terrified.

"You knew."

My voice was quiet.

Adrian immediately looked at me.

"Emma—"

"You knew he was alive."

He didn't answer.

That was the only answer I needed.

Richard watched us.

Then he laughed softly.

"Interesting."

He walked farther into the room.

"After everything I taught you, Adrian, you still couldn't control one woman."

My eyes narrowed.

One woman.

Not my wife.

Not Emma.

One woman.

Like I was a problem to solve.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Leave her out of this."

Richard looked at him.

"You still protect her."

His smile disappeared.

"That was always your weakness."

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not fear.

Not anymore.

"You don't get to walk into my house and talk like you own everything."

Richard turned toward me.

For a moment, he looked surprised.

Then amused.

"So this is the woman."

I stared at him.

"What woman?"

"The one who made my son forget who he was."

The room became silent.

I looked at Adrian.

The man who had destroyed himself trying to become powerful.

The man who had hidden everything.

And now I understood.

His father was the reason.

Richard walked toward the desk.

His eyes landed on the documents.

Then the USB drive.

"You found the box."

Adrian immediately moved.

"You knew about it?"

Richard smiled.

"I created it."

My heart sank.

"What?"

Richard picked up one of the documents.

"You really thought your mother kept secrets from me?"

Adrian's expression changed.

"My mother?"

Richard looked at him.

"She knew everything."

The words hit harder than expected.

I looked at Adrian.

"Your mother was involved?"

He looked confused.

"I thought..."

He stopped.

Richard smiled.

"That she died believing your father was a monster?"

Nobody spoke.

Because that was exactly what Adrian believed.

Richard placed the document back on the desk.

"Your mother was smarter than both of us."

"Then why did she hide everything?"

Richard looked at me.

"Because she knew someone would need to find the truth later."

I picked up the photograph of Lily.

The little girl.

The missing woman.

The secret that started everything.

"Who is Lily?"

Richard's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Where did you get that?"

I held the photograph tighter.

"Answer me."

Adrian looked between us.

"Father."

Richard ignored him.

"You should have never found that picture."

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

Not because he threatened me.

Because he sounded like someone who had spent years making sure that picture stayed hidden.

Claire stepped forward.

"Tell her."

Richard looked at her.

"You still have courage?"

Claire didn't move.

"You destroyed enough lives."

Richard smiled.

"Careful."

The single word made her stop.

I noticed.

Everyone was afraid of him.

Even Claire.

Even Adrian.

Everyone except me.

Maybe because I was the only person who had nothing left to lose.

"Who is Lily?"

Richard looked at me.

Then at Adrian.

Finally, he sighed.

"Lily was never supposed to survive."

The room went silent.

My breath caught.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian looked horrified.

"Father."

Richard continued.

"The night my daughter disappeared, Lily was supposed to disappear with her."

I felt sick.

"Your daughter?"

Richard looked at Adrian.

"Your sister."

The missing woman.

The woman from the video.

The mother of Lily.

"She was trying to expose the company."

Richard's voice remained cold.

"She believed the world deserved the truth."

"And she was right."

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Richard looked at me.

"You don't understand what you are involved in."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"I understand perfectly."

I pointed toward the documents.

"My husband built an empire using secrets."

I pointed toward the photograph.

"Your daughter disappeared because she knew too much."

Then I looked directly at him.

"And now you are standing here because you are afraid I will find the rest."

For the first time, Richard's expression changed.

A small crack in his confidence.

Adrian saw it too.

"Emma..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He looked at his father.

Then back at me.

"There is something else."

I waited.

But Adrian didn't continue.

Richard smiled.

"Tell her."

Adrian looked frozen.

"Tell her why you really married her."

The room went completely still.

I looked at my husband.

"What did he mean?"

Adrian's face lost all color.

"Emma, it's not like that."

Richard laughed.

"Of course it isn't."

He walked toward the window.

"Because my son didn't marry you for money."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Then why?"

Nobody answered.

Richard looked back at Adrian.

"You were supposed to use her."

The words felt like a physical удар.

I stared at Adrian.

"No."

He stepped forward.

"Emma, listen to me."

"No."

My voice cracked.

But I refused to cry.

"Tell me he is lying."

Adrian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

I stepped back.

Seven years.

Seven years of memories.

Seven years of believing I was loved.

And now I didn't know which moments were real.

Richard watched me.

Satisfied.

"You see?"

He said quietly.

"Everyone eventually learns who Adrian Vale really is."

Adrian looked at him with anger.

"You don't know what you're doing."

Richard turned.

"No."

He smiled.

"You don't know what you've done."

Then he pulled something from his coat.

A small envelope.

Old.

Sealed.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same kind of envelope Adrian had been holding earlier.

Richard placed it on the desk.

"This belongs to Emma."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His expression became serious.

"Because inside is the reason your entire marriage began."

Nobody moved.

I reached for the envelope.

But before my fingers touched it, Adrian whispered:

"Don't open it."

I stopped.

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His eyes were filled with fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

May you like

Then Richard smiled and said:

"Because once she reads who chose her seven years ago, she will finally know who the real enemy is..."
