Chapter 1 - The Woman He Claimed In Silence

A young woman dropped her champagne glass on the ballroom floor and whispered: "Why is the mafia boss holding her?"

When Adrian Moretti pulled the unknown woman onto his lap, he discovered a torn invitation card hidden inside her purse. But three words were written on the back: "Protect her tonight."

Adrian suddenly realized this was not a random choice.

The first thing I noticed was the silence.

Not the ordinary silence that happened when music ended or when people waited for a speech.

This was the kind of silence that made hundreds of people stop breathing.

I was standing in the middle of the Grand Monarch Ballroom, surrounded by the richest and most powerful people in the city, when Adrian Moretti looked at me like he had already made a decision that nobody could change.

I still remembered the way every camera turned toward us.

The way every conversation disappeared.

The way women who had spent years trying to get his attention suddenly looked at me with disbelief.

Because Adrian Moretti was not a man people touched.

He was not a man people questioned.

And he was definitely not a man who publicly protected someone.

But that night, he did something nobody expected.

He reached out.

And he pulled me onto his lap.

I froze.

My fingers tightened around the champagne glass I was holding.

"Adrian..."

My voice was barely a whisper.

I expected anger.

I expected embarrassment.

I expected him to explain why he had just changed my entire life in front of everyone.

Instead, he looked at the crowd surrounding us.

His hand rested calmly around my waist.

Not possessive.

Protective.

The message was clear.

Nobody was allowed to hurt me.

A woman wearing a silver gown covered her mouth in shock.

A businessman near the orchestra stopped talking.

Even people who had spent years around Adrian looked confused.

Because everyone knew one rule about Adrian Moretti.

He never showed weakness.

And everyone believed caring about someone was his greatest weakness.

I was the last person who expected to become that person.

Just three hours earlier, I had entered the ballroom believing I was invisible.

I was not from a wealthy family.

I did not have powerful connections.

I was not someone invited because people wanted my company.

I was there because I worked as a fashion designer for one of the luxury brands sponsoring the event.

I had spent years creating beautiful dresses for women who never knew my name.

I was always behind the scenes.

Always watching.

Always forgotten.

Until Adrian saw me.

The first time we met was not romantic.

It was dangerous.

I had accidentally walked into a private hallway while searching for the designer room.

That hallway belonged to Adrian.

Two guards immediately stopped me.

I remember their expressions.

Fear.

Not toward me.

Toward what would happen if Adrian found out someone entered his private area.

Then he appeared.

Black suit.

Cold eyes.

A presence that made the entire hallway feel smaller.

"Who are you?"

His voice was calm.

But everyone around him became nervous.

I should have been afraid.

Everyone else was.

But something about his expression made me answer honestly.

"My name is Sofia Bennett. I was looking for the designer room."

He studied me.

Not my dress.

Not my appearance.

Me.

That was the first strange thing about Adrian Moretti.

He looked like a man who had spent his entire life surrounded by lies.

But somehow, he knew when someone was telling the truth.

"You are lost," he finally said.

"Yes."

"And you are not afraid of me."

I looked at him.

"I don't know you well enough to be afraid."

For the first time, something changed in his expression.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

Then he walked away.

I thought that was the end.

I was wrong.

Because Adrian Moretti had remembered me.

And three hours later, he changed everything.

After he pulled me onto his lap, the music continued.

The orchestra continued playing.

But nobody was listening.

A man approached us.

Victor Hale.

One of the oldest business partners connected to Adrian's organization.

He was in his fifties.

Always confident.

Always impossible to surprise.

Until that moment.

"Adrian," Victor said carefully.

The ballroom became even quieter.

"You never do this."

Adrian looked at him.

"Do what?"

Victor glanced at me.

"Bring someone into your world."

I felt every eye on me.

I wanted to disappear.

But Adrian's hand tightened slightly.

A quiet reminder.

Stay.

Victor lowered his voice.

"You don't know what people will think."

Adrian looked around the room.

Then he looked back at me.

"People have thought whatever they wanted about me for years."

His voice was cold.

"But tonight, they will understand one thing."

Everyone waited.

"She is not someone they can disrespect."

My heart stopped.

Because I had spent my entire life being overlooked.

And now the most feared man in the city had just told everyone I mattered.

But I still did not understand why.

Later that night, after the guests returned to their conversations, Adrian asked me to follow him.

I expected answers.

Instead, he took me to a private office overlooking the ballroom.

A small envelope was waiting on the desk.

My name was written on it.

Sofia Bennett.

I stared at it.

"I don't understand."

Adrian did not answer.

He watched me open it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

A photograph of me.

But I had never seen it before.

My hands started shaking.

Because behind the photo was a message.

Six words.

"You were never supposed to survive."

I looked at Adrian.

For the first time that night, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

He reached for the photograph.

Then his phone rang.

Adrian answered.

His face changed immediately.

"What do you mean she was found?"

I stood frozen.

Found?

Who was looking for me?

He ended the call slowly.

Then he looked at the office door.

Someone was outside.

Someone who should not have been there.

The handle moved.

May you like

The door opened slightly.

And a voice whispered Adrian's name from the other side...
