Chapter 8 - Dante Rossi's Last Secret

Elena read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

"I never knew your mother."

"I know."

"Then why would Luca write this?"

Dante looked exhausted.

The letter explained that years earlier, Dante and Luca's mother, Sofia Rossi, had worked as an accountant for Alexander Vale.

She discovered irregular transfers.

She intended to expose them.

Then she disappeared.

Dante had been told she'd abandoned the family.

Luca never believed it.

Neither, apparently, had Dante.

Elena reached the final paragraph.

A name appeared.

Evelyn Voss.

Her mother.

Elena stopped breathing.

"No."

Dante said nothing.

"My mother knew yours?"

"Apparently."

Elena called her parents.

Her mother answered.

The moment Elena said Sofia Rossi, silence filled the line.

"Mom?"

Evelyn began crying.

Twenty-five years earlier, she had worked briefly with Sofia.

Sofia discovered evidence against Vale and secretly gave Evelyn copies.

Before Evelyn could help her expose him, Sofia disappeared.

Terrified, Evelyn left New York.

She never knew what happened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought it was finished."

Nothing was ever finished when people buried truth.

Elena asked about the copies.

Her mother went quiet.

"I still have them."

Dante closed his eyes.

Those records became the final independent evidence needed to connect Vale's network to crimes stretching back decades.

More importantly for Dante, they contained Sofia's handwritten notes.

She hadn't abandoned her sons.

She had tried to protect them.

Her disappearance was later confirmed to have been connected to Vale's efforts to silence witnesses, and investigators reopened the case.

Dante sat alone after hearing the news.

Elena joined him.

"I spent twenty-five years angry at her."

"You believed what you were told."

"I should have looked."

"You were a child."

"Later."

"Later you became someone who survived by not asking questions."

Dante looked at her.

"That's not a compliment."

"It wasn't meant to be."

He laughed softly.

Then became serious.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Knowing your name."

"Yes."

"For coming into your apartment."

"Definitely."

"For putting you in danger."

"You didn't start this."

"I contributed to the world that made it possible."

Elena appreciated that he didn't excuse himself.

"What happens now?"

"I'm dismantling everything connected to my father's old partnerships."

"Everything?"

"Everything."

"And your legitimate businesses?"

"I'll keep what survives independent audits."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"Rebecca suggested that?"

"Rebecca threatened it."

"Good."

He smiled.

Then Elena asked the question she'd avoided.

"What happens to us?"

Dante looked surprised.

"Was there an us?"

"You put me on your lap in a hotel lounge."

"Under tactical circumstances."

Despite everything, Elena laughed.

Dante smiled.

It changed his entire face.

"I don't know," he said.

It was perhaps the most honest answer he'd given.

"I don't want gratitude confused with affection."

Elena nodded.

"Neither do I."

"And you've been through something traumatic."

"So have you."

"Which makes this an exceptionally bad time."

"Probably."

They sat in silence.

Then Elena said, "Coffee?"

Dante looked at her.

"Coffee."

No promises.

No dramatic kiss.

Just coffee.

For three weeks, life slowly returned.

Vespers remained closed for repairs.

Marcus cooperated fully with investigators and surrendered financial records. He faced consequences for his involvement but received consideration for his assistance.

Tasha moved temporarily to her sister's home.

Luca began rehabilitation.

Dante visited him daily.

Elena stayed with her parents for a week.

Then returned to Manhattan.

She expected her apartment to feel haunted.

Instead, it simply felt small.

Normal.

Hers.

One evening, someone knocked.

Elena checked the peephole.

Dante.

She opened the door.

"You knocked."

"I've learned boundaries."

"Impressive."

He held two coffees.

She let him in.

They talked for two hours.

Not about Vale.

Not about Luca.

Not about danger.

Movies.

Food.

Dante's terrible taste in music.

Elena's secret obsession with cooking shows.

It felt strange.

Then good.

When he left, he paused.

"I meant what I said."

"Which thing?"

"That night."

She knew.

I'll keep you safe.

Elena smiled.

"I don't need you to keep me safe."

Dante nodded.

"I know."

"But you can walk me to work tomorrow."

His smile returned.

"I'd like that."

The next morning, Elena received a call from Rebecca Shaw.

She expected another update.

Instead Shaw said, "We have a problem."

Elena's stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Bell disappeared before we could arrest him."

Elena looked toward her window.

"How long ago?"

"Three hours."

"Does Dante know?"

"I'm calling him next."

Then someone slid an envelope beneath Elena's apartment door.

She stared.

Shaw was still talking.

"Elena?"

She approached slowly.

The envelope had no return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Dante walking toward her building.

Taken five minutes earlier.

On the back:

HE WON'T REACH YOUR DOOR.

Then the hallway lights went out.
