Chapter 3 - The Promise in the Police Lights

Marcus barely finished speaking before Dante turned.

"Marcus."

Marcus stopped.

Elena had never seen her boss frightened of anyone.

Tonight, she had seen it twice.

Marcus slipped the recorder into his coat.

Dante approached.

"You've had that since Tuesday."

Marcus said nothing.

"Why?"

"Because Luca gave it to me."

Dante froze.

Elena looked between them.

"You knew his brother?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Dante's voice dropped.

"Start talking."

Marcus sat.

What followed changed everything Elena thought she understood about Vespers.

Six months earlier, Luca Rossi had begun coming to the bar alone.

He always requested booth six.

He drank club soda.

He carried folders.

Marcus initially assumed he was conducting business.

Then Luca asked whether Vespers kept security footage.

Marcus became suspicious.

"Luca thought someone was using private clubs to arrange illegal financial transfers," Marcus explained.

Elena frowned.

"What kind?"

"Money moved through shell companies, fake property deals, charitable foundations."

Dante's expression remained unreadable.

"Luca discovered someone powerful was involved."

"Who?" Elena asked.

Marcus looked at Dante.

"He never told me."

"Why give you the recorder?"

"He didn't."

Marcus turned toward Elena.

"He left it for her."

Silence.

Elena laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

"He specifically described you."

"Why?"

"Because you were invisible."

Elena flinched.

Marcus corrected himself.

"Not literally. People didn't notice you listening. You worked. You kept your head down. You didn't gossip. Luca believed that made you safe."

"He used me?"

"He trusted you."

"He didn't know me."

"He watched how you treated people."

Elena stood.

"This is insane."

Marcus removed the recorder.

"I hid it because Luca told me not to give it to you unless someone came asking about room 417."

Dante stared.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Luca told me not to trust you."

That landed hard.

Dante's face became perfectly still.

Elena remembered the anonymous message.

ASK DANTE WHO KILLED HIS BROTHER.

Dante reached for the recorder.

Marcus pulled back.

"No."

"That's my brother's."

"No. It's Elena's."

Marcus handed it to her.

Dante didn't interfere.

That mattered.

Elena examined the recorder.

Cheap.

Black.

A scratch across one corner.

She pressed play.

Static.

Then Luca's voice.

"If you're hearing this, something went wrong."

Dante looked away.

The recording continued.

"My name is Luca Rossi. Elena, you don't know me, but I chose you because you once returned an envelope containing twelve thousand dollars that a customer left under a table."

Elena remembered.

Marcus had told her the envelope contained paperwork.

Apparently it hadn't.

"You didn't open it. You didn't take anything. You didn't even tell coworkers. You simply gave it to Marcus."

Elena stared at her boss.

Marcus nodded.

Luca continued.

"That told me something about you."

A pause.

"The people I'm investigating believe loyalty can always be purchased. They don't understand people like you."

Dante sat slowly.

"If Dante is with you, listen carefully."

Elena's eyes moved toward him.

Dante didn't breathe.

"My brother is not your enemy."

Dante closed his eyes.

"But he doesn't know everything."

Elena leaned closer to the recorder.

"There is someone inside his organization who has been feeding information to the people I'm investigating."

Dante opened his eyes.

"The evidence is in room 417."

The recording crackled.

"Not the hotel room."

Everyone looked at one another.

Marcus whispered, "What?"

Luca continued.

"Four-one-seven is a locker number."

Dante stood.

"Where?"

The recording answered.

"Grand Central."

Then static.

Elena's pulse accelerated.

"Locker 417 contains a ledger and a drive. Together they identify everyone involved."

Another pause.

"If I'm dead, don't take it to police."

Marcus looked toward Elena.

"Take it to federal prosecutor Rebecca Shaw."

Dante frowned.

"Rebecca?"

"You know her?" Elena asked.

"Yes."

The recorder continued.

"And Elena—"

The recording suddenly stopped.

Elena pressed play again.

Nothing.

Battery dead.

Marcus cursed.

Dante took out his phone.

"We move now."

Elena didn't argue.

Grand Central was twenty minutes away.

Dante's driver took side streets.

Marcus came with them.

They entered through Vanderbilt Avenue.

Morning commuters had begun appearing.

That helped.

Dante kept several feet from Elena rather than touching her.

He had apparently remembered her warning.

Locker 417 was in an older luggage-storage section connected to a private concierge facility.

Dante entered the number.

Locked.

"Key?" Elena asked.

Marcus shook his head.

Dante stared at the lock.

Then Elena remembered the brass plaque.

The scratched number.

She reached into her coat.

Earlier, without thinking, she'd pocketed a small piece of metal from Vespers.

Marcus stared.

"The reservation plaque."

Elena turned it over.

A tiny key had been taped beneath it.

Dante almost smiled.

"Luca."

She inserted it.

Click.

The locker opened.

Inside sat a brown envelope.

Nothing else.

Dante removed it.

Elena opened the flap.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Names.

Dates.

And one picture that made Dante stop breathing.

Luca.

Standing beside Detective Aaron Bell.

Elena's stomach tightened.

On the back, Luca had written:

BELL KNOWS.

Marcus whispered, "That could mean anything."

Dante turned to another photograph.

Bell meeting one of the men Elena remembered from booth six.

Now it meant something.

Elena's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She almost didn't look.

Then she did.

YOU OPENED THE WRONG LOCKER.

Her head snapped upward.

Dante saw her expression.

"What?"

A metallic sound came from behind them.

Another locker opened.

Number 418.

Slowly.

From inside came the ringing of a phone.

Dante stepped toward it.

Elena whispered, "Don't."

The locker door swung fully open.

There was no phone inside.

Only a photograph.

A photograph taken minutes earlier.

Elena sitting on Dante's lap in the hotel lounge.

May you like

On the back were three handwritten words.

WE SEE EVERYTHING.
