Chapter 4 - What I Heard Without Knowing

Dante didn't touch the photograph.
Neither did Elena.
Marcus stared at it.
"They're watching us."
"No," Dante said.
"They're directing us."
He looked down the corridor.
People moved normally.
Commuters.
Workers.
Travelers.
Anyone could have placed it there.
Dante picked up the envelope from 417.
"We leave."
Outside, Elena finally asked, "Where?"
"Somewhere they don't expect."
"Apparently they expect everywhere."
Dante couldn't argue.
Marcus suggested his sister's empty townhouse in Brooklyn.
Dante rejected it immediately.
"They know Marcus."
Elena said, "My parents have a cabin."
Both men looked at her.
"Upstate. Nobody knows about it because I barely go."
"How far?"
"Two hours."
Dante nodded.
They changed cars twice.
By sunrise, Manhattan disappeared behind them.
At the cabin, Marcus found an old charger that fit Luca's recorder.
They waited.
Elena sat by the kitchen table.
Dante stood near the window.
"Do you always stand like you're expecting somebody to attack?"
"Mostly."
"Sounds exhausting."
"It is."
She studied him.
"Why didn't Luca trust you?"
Dante remained silent for several seconds.
"Because I spent years protecting the wrong people."
Elena waited.
"My father built businesses with men who believed fear was useful. I inherited relationships I should have ended."
"Illegal relationships?"
"Some."
"You were involved?"
"I looked away."
The answer was quieter than she expected.
"That's not the same as innocence."
"I know."
For the first time, Elena understood why Dante never defended himself with grand speeches.
He knew exactly what he had been.
"Luca wanted out?"
"Luca wanted everything clean."
"And you?"
"I wanted him alive."
The recorder light turned green.
Marcus pressed play.
Luca's voice returned.
"And Elena, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry."
She swallowed.
"You became involved because of something you heard at Vespers."
A recording followed.
Two male voices.
Elena recognized them.
Booth six.
One said, "Shaw gets the files Friday."
The second replied, "Then Rossi's brother won't make Saturday."
Elena's skin went cold.
She had heard that sentence.
But she hadn't understood it.
Luca continued.
"You were behind them when they said it. One of them saw you in the mirror."
Elena remembered the man with the scar watching her.
She had thought he wanted another drink.
"He believes you heard enough to identify him."
Marcus lowered his head.
The recorder continued.
"His name is Victor Hale."
Dante's jaw tightened.
Elena noticed.
"You know him."
"Yes."
"Who is he?"
"My father's former business partner."
Luca continued.
"Victor has spent years presenting himself as a legitimate investor. He isn't the only person involved. The ledger identifies the network."
Elena opened the envelope.
Names filled several pages.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Accountants.
One city official.
And—
Marcus.
Elena stopped.
She looked up.
Marcus saw the page.
His face changed.
"Elena."
She stepped backward.
"Your name is here."
"It's not what you think."
Dante moved between them.
Marcus raised his hands.
"I helped Luca."
"Then why are there payments beside your name?" Elena demanded.
Marcus swallowed.
"Because I was laundering money."
Silence.
Elena felt betrayed.
"For them?"
"At first."
Marcus sat heavily.
"Years ago, Vespers was failing. Victor offered financing. I accepted. Then I discovered what his people were using the accounts for."
"Why didn't you stop?"
"Because I was scared."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying they were scared."
"I was."
Marcus looked at her.
"Then Luca came to me. He offered a way out."
"You could have warned me."
"I thought hiding the recorder protected you."
"It nearly got me killed."
Marcus had no answer.
Dante examined the ledger.
"This isn't enough."
"What?"
"Names and transfers establish financial crimes, but Hale can claim ignorance. We need the drive Luca mentioned."
The envelope contained no drive.
Elena searched again.
Nothing.
Then she noticed the recorder's battery compartment was unusually thick.
She opened it.
Behind the battery sat a microSD card.
Marcus exhaled.
Dante stared.
"Luca always did like hiding things in plain sight."
They inserted it into Marcus's laptop.
Encrypted.
Password required.
Elena tried 417.
Wrong.
Luca.
Wrong.
Dante tried their mother's birthday.
Wrong.
One attempt remained before automatic deletion.
"Stop," Elena said.
She thought about Luca's message.
People like you.
Returning money.
Doing the right thing when nobody watched.
She typed one word.
INTEGRITY.
The screen unlocked.
Folders appeared.
Dozens.
Videos.
Documents.
Audio.
Dante opened the first.
Victor Hale appeared in a restaurant.
The second showed financial transfers.
The third contained conversations.
Then Elena saw a folder named DANTE.
Dante stopped.
"Open it," he said.
She did.
One video.
Luca appeared alone.
"Dante, if you ever see this, there's something I never told you."
Dante leaned closer.
"The night Dad died, Victor wasn't there by accident."
Dante's face hardened.
"He arranged it."
Elena covered her mouth.
Luca continued.
"And there's something worse."
The video glitched.
Recovered.
"He didn't do it for money."
Dante whispered, "Then why?"
Luca looked directly into the camera.
"He did it because Dad discovered who Victor really worked for."
The screen froze.
Marcus tapped the keyboard.
Nothing.
Then another file automatically opened.
A security photograph.
Victor Hale entering Vespers.
Beside him walked Detective Bell.
May you like
And between them was someone Elena recognized immediately.
Tasha.
