Chapter 7 - The Recording They Would Kill to Bury

The hidden room beneath Vespers had no legal record.

No permit.

No utility account.

Nothing.

According to architectural plans Shaw uncovered, it had been sealed during renovations eighteen years earlier.

Yet thermal imaging showed someone inside.

Elena stared at the screen.

"Tasha?"

"Possibly," Shaw said.

Dante looked at the building schematic.

"Two entrances."

Marcus shook his head.

"I know only the stairs."

"There's a tunnel."

Dante pointed.

It connected to the neighboring building.

Federal agents entered through both.

Elena stayed in the command vehicle this time.

Dante remained beside her.

"You wanted to go in," she said.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

He looked at her.

"Because sometimes protecting someone means trusting other people to do their jobs."

Elena smiled slightly.

"You're learning."

"Slowly."

The radio crackled.

Room secured.

One civilian located.

Tasha.

No Alexander Vale.

But agents found something else.

An archive.

Hard drives.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

Twenty years of records.

Alexander Vale hadn't merely financed Victor.

He had built the entire network.

And he'd done it partly through businesses connected to Dante's father.

Dante stared at the evidence.

"My father knew?"

Luca, connected by video call from protective custody, answered.

"Eventually."

"What does that mean?"

"Dad helped Vale early on."

Dante closed his eyes.

"But he tried to expose him later."

Luca continued.

"That's why Vale arranged his death."

Dante looked toward Elena.

Everything he had inherited—money, influence, reputation—suddenly carried a different weight.

"What do I do with that?" he asked quietly.

Elena understood he wasn't asking about evidence.

"Whatever your father failed to do."

He looked at her.

"Finish it."

For the next twelve hours, federal teams processed the archive.

Vale remained missing.

Then Elena found the clue.

A photograph showed Vale standing beside a property sign.

Calder Hotel.

Room 417 hadn't been meaningless after all.

The locker had been one layer.

The hotel was another.

Shaw assembled a team.

This time, Dante and Elena were forbidden from joining.

They waited at a secure location.

An hour passed.

Then two.

Finally Shaw called.

"We found Vale."

Elena exhaled.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"In custody."

Dante closed his eyes.

It was over.

Almost.

Vale requested to speak with Elena.

Shaw refused.

Elena surprised everyone.

"I'll do it."

"No," Dante said.

She looked at him.

"He spent days making decisions about my life without asking me. I want him to see that he failed."

The interview occurred through reinforced glass with agents present.

Vale looked ordinary.

That disturbed Elena most.

He smiled when she entered.

"Miss Voss."

"Mr. Vale."

"You've been troublesome."

"So I've heard."

"You believe you've won?"

Elena said nothing.

Vale leaned closer.

"Men like Dante Rossi don't become harmless because a bartender believes in them."

"I don't believe he's harmless."

Dante, watching from another room, heard every word.

Elena continued.

"I believe he gets to decide what kind of man he becomes next."

Vale's smile faded.

"And you?"

"I already decided."

"What?"

"That I'm done being afraid of people who mistake fear for power."

Vale stared at her.

Elena stood.

There would be no dramatic confession.

She didn't need one.

The evidence was enough.

As she reached the door, Vale spoke.

"Luca's recording isn't complete."

Elena stopped.

Vale smiled.

"Ask Dante what he deleted."

She turned.

"What?"

"Dante found Luca's first recording months before you did."

Elena's pulse changed.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

Elena left without answering.

Dante waited outside.

She looked at him.

"Did you find one of Luca's recordings before the night at Vespers?"

Silence.

That was her answer.

"Dante."

"Yes."

Her stomach dropped.

"What was on it?"

He looked at the floor.

"Something about you."

Elena stepped backward.

"You knew my name before that night."

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Three months."

She stared at him.

Every moment replayed differently.

His arrival at her apartment.

His certainty.

His promise.

"Why?"

Dante reached inside his coat.

Slowly.

He removed an envelope.

"I've been carrying this since Luca disappeared."

Elena didn't take it.

"What is it?"

"A letter."

"To whom?"

Dante's eyes met hers.

"You."

Elena finally reached for it.

Her name was written across the front in Luca's handwriting.

She opened the envelope.

One sentence appeared at the top.

ELENA VOSS IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN TELL DANTE WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO OUR MOTHER.
