Chapter 6 - The Basement That Was Never On The Blueprint

The basement door opened wider.
Slowly.
Almost like someone on the other side wanted me to see it.
Not a forced entrance.
Not an accident.
An invitation.
I stared at the darkness beyond the doorway.
For years, I had owned this house.
I knew every room.
Every hallway.
Every security camera.
Every hidden corner.
Or at least I thought I did.
Because I had never seen that door before.
Grace came down the stairs behind me.
"Elias."
Her voice was different.
Not afraid.
Terrified.
I turned toward her.
"You knew about this?"
She stopped.
That was the answer.
I didn't need words.
My chest tightened.
"How long?"
She looked away.
"Elias, please."
"No."
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
"How long has there been a basement under my house?"
Nobody spoke.
Adrian stepped forward.
"I didn't know about this."
I looked at him.
"You expect me to believe that?"
His expression hardened.
"Yes."
Something about his answer made me pause.
Because Adrian had always been terrible at lying.
Even as a child.
He couldn't hide disappointment.
He couldn't hide anger.
He couldn't hide pain.
And right now, he looked genuinely confused.
Which meant one thing.
Someone had hidden this from all of us.
I turned back toward the basement.
The air coming from inside was cold.
Not naturally cold.
The kind of cold that comes from a place untouched for years.
I grabbed a flashlight from the security cabinet.
Then I stepped inside.
"Elias, wait."
Grace's voice stopped me for half a second.
I didn't turn around.
Because if I did, I wasn't sure I could continue.
"I need the truth."
Then I walked down.
The stairs were old.
Older than the house itself.
That was impossible.
The walls were unfinished.
The construction didn't match the mansion above.
This wasn't part of the original design.
Someone had built it later.
Someone had hidden it.
At the bottom was a small hallway.
Three doors.
The first was empty.
The second contained old boxes.
The third was locked.
I walked toward it.
There was a name carved into the wood.
Adrian.
I froze.
Behind me, I heard footsteps.
Adrian came closer.
When he saw the door, his expression changed.
"I've never seen that before."
I looked at him.
"Someone built a hidden room under my house and put your name on it."
He didn't answer.
Because he knew how impossible that sounded.
I examined the lock.
No key.
Only a small electronic panel.
I touched it.
The screen turned on.
A fingerprint scanner.
Then words appeared.
"IDENTITY REQUIRED."
Below it was another line.
"CHOOSE THE BROTHER WHO RETURNED."
Nobody moved.
My eyes slowly lifted toward Adrian.
"What does that mean?"
He looked as confused as I was.
"I don't know."
But before I could respond, the system changed.
A new message appeared.
"ONE BROTHER WAS LOST."
Pause.
"ONE BROTHER WAS SAVED."
Grace covered her mouth.
"What is this?"
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know.
Then the screen showed another message.
"THE TRUTH BELONGS TO THE ONE WHO SURVIVED."
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a room.
Not a storage room.
Not a hiding place.
A control room.
There were monitors.
Documents.
Photographs.
Records.
Someone had been watching us.
For years.
I stepped inside.
The walls were covered with pictures.
My family.
My businesses.
My daily routine.
My marriage.
My entire life.
Someone had documented everything.
Grace walked in behind me.
Then stopped.
Because she saw something.
A photograph pinned to the wall.
A photograph of her.
But not with me.
With Daniel.
My entire body went still.
The image showed Grace and Daniel standing outside a building.
They looked serious.
Like they were discussing something important.
The date was written underneath.
Three months after Adrian disappeared.
I looked at Grace.
She immediately started crying.
"Elias..."
I raised the photo.
"Explain."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That hurt more than the picture.
Because silence was sometimes the loudest confession.
Adrian looked at the image.
Then shook his head.
"No."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He stepped closer.
"That's not what it looks like."
I laughed.
"Everyone says that."
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"Look at the background."
I looked again.
Behind Grace and Daniel was a building.
A warehouse.
I recognized it.
My father's old property.
The one that was sold after his death.
"Why were they there?"
Nobody answered.
Then I noticed something else.
A small mark in the corner of the photograph.
A symbol.
The same symbol from the documents hidden in Daniel's office.
I walked toward the desk.
There was a folder labeled:
HARRISON FAMILY PROJECT.
My stomach tightened.
Project?
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Birth records.
Financial records.
Medical files.
Then I saw something that made my hands shake.
A DNA report.
Between me and Adrian.
I looked at the result.
Then I stopped.
Because the report showed something impossible.
Adrian wasn't my biological brother.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
The room suddenly felt silent.
"You knew?"
I asked.
Adrian slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Then why is there a report?"
He looked at the papers.
"I don't know."
I kept searching.
More documents.
More secrets.
Then I found another folder.
This one had my name.
Inside was a letter.
From my father.
I opened it.
The handwriting was clear.
"Elias."
"If you are reading this, then the people I feared were successful."
My breathing slowed.
"My greatest mistake was believing blood was the only thing that created family."
I looked at Adrian.
Then continued reading.
"Adrian was never your enemy."
A pause.
"He was the person I trusted to protect you."
My eyes moved down.
"And Daniel was the person I trusted to protect both of you."
I stopped.
Because the sentence didn't make sense.
Daniel?
The man who betrayed us?
The letter continued.
"But Daniel discovered the truth before he was ready."
Another page.
Missing.
The rest had been ripped away.
I searched the desk.
Nothing.
Then Adrian pointed toward the monitor.
"There."
The screen was turning on.
A recording started automatically.
My father's face appeared again.
But this time he looked older.
Tired.
Afraid.
"Elias..."
The video shook slightly.
"If you found this room, then you already know Adrian survived."
He looked directly into the camera.
"But you don't know why."
The screen flickered.
My father leaned closer.
"Listen carefully."
"Daniel didn't betray our family because he wanted power."
A pause.
"He betrayed us because he found out who your real enemy was."
The video froze.
Then a final message appeared.
"THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS NOT DANIEL."
Everyone stared.
Because the next line appeared slowly.
"IT IS SOMEONE STANDING BESIDE YOU RIGHT NOW."
The lights in the basement suddenly went out.
A sound came from behind us.
A phone ringing.
Not mine.
Not Adrian's.
Grace slowly reached into her pocket.
Her face changed.
"Elias..."
I looked at her.
"Who is calling?"
She didn't answer.
Because she was staring at the screen.
May you like
The caller name appeared.
And it was the name of someone who had been dead for twelve years.
