Chapter 3 - The Night My Brother Disappeared

The door handle moved again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone wasn't trying to break in.
Someone already knew they belonged there.
Grace stood frozen beside the bed, holding the envelope in her hand.
I watched from the shadows near the closet.
My mind was moving faster than my body.
Daniel.
My brother.
The secret.
The warning.
Everything connected to the same night.
The night everyone told me to forget.
For years, I believed my brother's death was the one thing in my life I could never change.
His name was Adrian.
And he was the only person who knew me before the money, before the power, before people started whispering my name instead of saying it.
Adrian was different from me.
I built walls.
He opened doors.
I calculated every move.
He believed people deserved second chances.
Maybe that was why I loved him.
And maybe that was why someone wanted him gone.
The official story was simple.
Too simple.
A car accident.
A wet road.
A mistake.
That was what Daniel told me.
That was what the police report said.
That was what everyone expected me to accept.
But now my wife was standing in my bedroom holding a document about that exact night.
And Daniel was afraid I would find out.
The door handle stopped moving.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then the door opened.
I prepared myself.
But it wasn't Daniel.
It was Grace's assistant, Claire.
She stepped inside quickly and closed the door behind her.
Grace looked relieved.
"You scared me."
Claire didn't apologize.
She looked terrified.
"We need to leave."
Grace stared at her.
"What?"
"Now."
"Why?"
Claire looked toward the hallway.
"Because he knows."
My chest tightened.
"Who?"
Claire hesitated.
Then she said the name I already feared.
"Daniel."
Grace lowered her voice.
"How?"
Claire reached into her bag and pulled out a small black device.
A recording device.
My eyes narrowed.
"I found this inside the office."
Grace stared at it.
"When?"
"Today."
Claire placed it on the bed.
"Someone has been listening to your conversations."
Grace looked sick.
"How long?"
Claire didn't answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
I stepped closer from the shadows.
Not enough for them to see me.
Enough to hear every word.
Grace looked at the device.
Then whispered:
"He knows about the document."
Claire nodded.
"And he knows you were going to tell Elias."
My heart stopped.
Tell me what?
I wanted to walk out.
I wanted to demand answers.
But then Claire said something that made me stay.
"The document isn't the only thing you need to worry about."
Grace looked at her.
"What else?"
Claire reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a photograph.
A photograph that looked old.
She handed it to Grace.
Grace stared at it.
Then covered her mouth.
I couldn't see the picture clearly.
Only the back.
There was handwriting.
One sentence.
"Adrian trusted the wrong person."
My brother's name.
Again.
I moved slightly.
The floor made a quiet sound.
Both women froze.
I stopped breathing.
Grace turned toward the closet.
"Is someone there?"
I remained still.
Claire looked at her.
"Grace..."
The room was silent.
Then Grace slowly walked toward the closet.
Every step felt louder.
My hand tightened.
I could reveal myself.
I could end this.
But something inside me said wait.
Because if Grace was working with Daniel, I needed to know.
And if she wasn't...
I needed to know why she never trusted me with the truth.
She reached the closet.
Her hand moved toward the door.
Then her phone rang.
The sound broke the tension.
Grace stepped back.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed instantly.
Claire noticed.
"Who is it?"
Grace didn't answer.
Because the number on the screen had no name.
No contact.
Just a blocked number.
The same number from before.
She answered slowly.
"Hello?"
A distorted voice spoke.
I couldn't hear every word.
But I heard enough.
"You should have left the house when you had the chance."
Grace became pale.
"Who are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"You already know."
The call ended.
Grace lowered the phone.
Claire looked at her.
"What did they say?"
Grace didn't respond.
Instead, she looked directly at the closet.
At me.
For one terrifying second, I thought she knew.
But then she whispered:
"They're here."
Claire stepped backward.
"What?"
Grace looked toward the bedroom door.
"They're inside the house."
My entire body became alert.
I listened.
Nothing.
Then I heard it.
A quiet movement downstairs.
Not one person.
Several.
My home.
My security.
My staff.
Someone had entered without triggering anything.
That meant only one thing.
They had help.
Grace grabbed Claire's arm.
"We need to hide the document."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"That's what they want."
Grace looked confused.
Claire continued.
"They want you to move it. They want you to panic."
She looked around the room.
"Someone is watching."
I slowly reached for my phone.
I needed to call my security team.
But before I could unlock it, my screen lit up.
A message.
From an unknown number.
My blood went cold.
Because the message wasn't sent to Grace.
It was sent to me.
The first line read:
"I know you're under the bed."
I stared at the screen.
My entire body froze.
Someone knew.
Someone knew I was here.
Another message appeared.
"You should have listened to your wife."
I looked at Grace.
She was still standing near the door.
She had no idea.
A third message arrived.
This time, only four words.
"Look behind the mirror."
I slowly raised my eyes.
Across the room was the large antique mirror above the dresser.
A mirror I had owned for years.
A mirror I had never questioned.
My instincts screamed at me.
I stepped out from the shadows.
Grace gasped.
"Elias?"
Claire immediately moved between us.
But I wasn't looking at them.
I was looking at the mirror.
Grace's face filled with shock.
She realized everything.
"You were here?"
I didn't answer.
Because there was something behind the mirror.
Something that shouldn't have been there.
I walked toward it.
Slowly.
Every step felt heavier.
I placed my hand against the frame.
And pulled.
The mirror moved.
Not much.
Just enough.
Behind it was a small hidden compartment.
Inside was a folder.
Old.
Dusty.
Waiting.
I opened it.
The first thing I saw was a photograph.
A photograph of Adrian.
My brother.
Standing beside Daniel.
But Daniel wasn't the thing that caught my attention.
It was the person standing behind them.
Someone I thought had been dead for twelve years.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a date written on the back.
The same date my brother disappeared.
And beneath it were five words:
"He never died alone."
Then the lights in the bedroom suddenly went out.
May you like
Grace screamed.
And from the darkness behind us, a familiar voice whispered my name.
