Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Return

The voice came from behind us.

"Elias."

I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it recently.

Because I had spent twelve years trying to forget it.

The lights flickered once.

Then came back.

Grace was standing beside me, frozen.

Claire had stepped backward, her face completely pale.

And I was staring at the person standing near the bedroom doorway.

A person who shouldn't have existed.

A person who was supposed to be buried in my memories.

Adrian.

My brother.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The human brain has a strange way of protecting itself.

Sometimes it creates a thousand explanations before accepting the truth.

A stranger.

A look-alike.

A hallucination caused by exhaustion.

Anything.

Anything except the impossible.

But Adrian was standing there.

Older.

Different.

But still Adrian.

The same eyes.

The same scar near his eyebrow.

The same expression he used to have when he knew something I didn't.

Grace whispered my name.

"Elias..."

I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

Because the last time I saw my brother, he was lying inside a hospital room after the accident that supposedly ended his life.

I remembered holding his hand.

I remembered the doctors telling me there was nothing they could do.

I remembered Daniel standing beside me.

The same Daniel who told me to let go.

The same Daniel who told me Adrian was gone.

But now Adrian was here.

Alive.

Standing inside my house.

"You look exactly the same," Adrian said quietly.

My anger arrived before my emotions could catch up.

I stepped forward.

"Where have you been?"

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"That's the first question you ask me?"

I stared at him.

"You disappeared."

A silence filled the room.

Then Adrian looked at Grace.

"You never told him."

Grace looked down.

"I tried."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"You waited."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because a part of me had been asking the same question.

Why?

Why had my wife hidden this?

Why had she allowed me to believe my brother was dead?

I turned toward Grace.

"How long?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Elias..."

"How long did you know?"

She couldn't answer.

That was enough.

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes betrayal hurts so much that anger doesn't come immediately.

It arrives later.

After the shock.

After the disbelief.

After you realize the people closest to you were standing beside a secret for years.

"Everyone knew except me."

Grace stepped closer.

"No."

I looked at her.

"Then explain."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian answered.

"Because I asked them not to."

I turned toward him.

"You asked my wife to lie to me?"

"I asked her to protect you."

I almost couldn't believe what I heard.

"Protect me?"

My voice became colder.

"From what?"

Adrian looked at the folder in my hand.

Then at the photograph.

"From the people who wanted me dead."

The room became silent.

I looked at the photograph again.

The image showed Adrian standing beside Daniel.

But there was another person behind them.

Someone whose face was partially hidden.

"Who is that?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

That worried me more than anything.

"Adrian."

He looked at me.

"That person is the reason I disappeared."

I stepped closer.

"Tell me."

He looked toward the hallway.

Like he expected someone else to appear.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Not here."

My patience broke.

"No."

Everyone froze.

"I spent twelve years believing my brother was dead."

I pointed at the photograph.

"I spent twelve years trusting the man who helped create that lie."

I looked at Grace.

"And I spent years sleeping beside someone who knew the truth."

My voice became quieter.

"So no one leaves this room until I understand everything."

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Grace sat down.

The strength disappeared from her face.

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

She looked at me.

"Many times."

"But you didn't."

She closed her eyes.

"Because every time I tried, something happened."

"What does that mean?"

She looked at Adrian.

And I saw fear.

Real fear.

Not the kind someone pretends to have.

The kind that comes from knowing exactly what someone is capable of.

"Every person who tried to help Adrian disappeared."

The room went cold.

Claire whispered:

"That's why I stayed away."

I looked at her.

"You knew too?"

She nodded slowly.

"I found out three years ago."

I stared at her.

"Three years?"

She looked ashamed.

"I was trying to find proof."

"Proof of what?"

She reached into her bag.

This time, she pulled out a small USB drive.

"I found this in Daniel's private office."

My attention moved to it.

"What is it?"

"Security footage."

"From where?"

Claire hesitated.

"From the night Adrian disappeared."

Nobody moved.

Because everyone knew what that meant.

The night that destroyed my family.

The night that changed everything.

I took the USB drive.

My hands were steady.

But inside, everything was falling apart.

"Where is Daniel now?"

Nobody answered.

That was when I knew.

Something had changed.

"What?"

Grace looked at me.

"He knows Adrian came back."

My eyes narrowed.

"How?"

Adrian looked toward the window.

"Because he was watching us."

I walked to the security panel.

My house.

My cameras.

My system.

Everything I controlled.

I accessed the footage.

The screen loaded.

The hallway appeared.

The entrance.

The living room.

The bedroom.

Then I stopped.

There was footage from earlier.

Before I arrived home.

Daniel was inside my house.

Not today.

Yesterday.

He had walked through my front door like he owned the place.

He had gone straight to my office.

Then the footage changed.

Another person entered.

Someone wearing a hood.

They met Daniel.

I paused the video.

"Who is that?"

Adrian stepped closer.

His face changed.

"I don't know."

That answer surprised me.

"You don't know?"

"No."

He looked at the screen.

"But Daniel does."

I replayed the footage.

The hooded person removed something from their pocket.

A document.

Daniel looked at it.

Then immediately burned it.

My stomach tightened.

"What was on that paper?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian said something quietly.

"Your father's signature."

I turned toward him.

"My father died before Adrian disappeared."

"I know."

"Then how was his signature on a document from that night?"

Adrian looked at me.

"Because your father wasn't dead."

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

"What?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"The night I disappeared wasn't an accident."

My hands formed fists.

"Then what was it?"

He looked directly into my eyes.

"It was a warning."

A notification suddenly appeared on the security screen.

A live connection.

Someone had accessed my cameras.

From outside.

I looked at the monitor.

A video feed opened.

A man appeared.

Older.

Gray hair.

A face I had seen in photographs my entire childhood.

My father.

My heart stopped.

Because the man on the screen looked directly into the camera.

And whispered:

May you like

"Elias... if you are watching this, Daniel has already found you."

Then the video went black.
