Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden in the Recording

The video ended.

But nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes silence reveals more than words ever could.

I stared at the black screen in front of me.

My father's face was gone.

His warning remained.

Daniel has already found you.

For twelve years, I believed my father died before Adrian disappeared.

For twelve years, I carried two losses.

My father.

My brother.

Now, in a matter of minutes, I had discovered that one of them was alive.

And the other one might have never been gone.

I looked at Adrian.

"How long have you known?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That was becoming a habit.

A dangerous one.

"Adrian."

He looked at me.

"Since the night I disappeared."

My jaw tightened.

"You saw him?"

He nodded.

"My father?"

"Yes."

The room felt smaller.

I stepped away from the monitor.

"Start talking."

Adrian looked at Grace.

She looked down.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because even now, after everything, part of me still wanted her to look at me and say she had a reason.

A good reason.

Something that would make all of this make sense.

But she didn't.

She looked guilty.

"I need to hear everything," I said.

Adrian took a breath.

"The night of the accident wasn't an accident."

I crossed my arms.

"I already know that."

"No."

His voice became serious.

"You don't."

A pause.

"Because you don't know what Daniel did before the crash."

My eyes narrowed.

"What did he do?"

Adrian walked toward the table and placed another item beside the USB drive.

A small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

My name was written across the front.

Elias.

My handwriting.

I stared at it.

"I wrote this?"

Adrian nodded.

"No."

I picked it up.

"Then why does it have my name?"

"Because someone wanted you to think you wrote it."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three lines.

Three sentences.

My blood went cold.

Because the handwriting looked exactly like mine.

"Adrian is not your enemy."

"Trust nobody around you."

"Daniel knows the truth."

I read it again.

Then looked at Adrian.

"Who made this?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he asked:

"Do you remember the night before I disappeared?"

I thought back.

Twelve years.

A lifetime.

"I remember you came to my office."

He nodded.

"What did I tell you?"

I closed my eyes.

Because I remembered.

Adrian had looked nervous.

More nervous than I had ever seen him.

He told me someone inside my organization was stealing money.

Someone close.

Someone I trusted.

I thought he was talking about business.

I thought he was angry.

I told him I would handle it.

Then the next morning...

The accident happened.

I opened my eyes.

"You knew about Daniel."

Adrian nodded.

"He wasn't just stealing."

The room went silent.

"He was building something."

"What?"

"A second operation."

I stared at him.

"Behind my back?"

"Behind everyone's back."

I laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

"Daniel spent years beside me."

"I know."

"He knew everything."

"That's why he was dangerous."

I looked toward Grace.

"And you knew."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I knew part of it."

"Part?"

She stepped closer.

"I knew Adrian was alive."

My expression changed.

"But I didn't know where he was."

"How convenient."

The words came out colder than I intended.

Grace flinched.

Immediately.

And I hated that I noticed.

Because despite everything, hurting her still hurt me.

"I wanted to tell you."

"When?"

She swallowed.

"The first year."

I looked away.

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because someone sent me a photograph."

I turned back.

"What photograph?"

Grace walked to the dresser.

She opened a drawer.

From beneath a stack of documents, she pulled out a picture.

She handed it to me.

My fingers tightened around it.

The image showed Grace standing outside a building.

Alone.

But behind her was a man.

Watching.

Daniel.

The date was written below.

Two years after Adrian disappeared.

"What was this?"

Grace's voice shook.

"The message attached said if I contacted you, they would release information that would destroy you."

I looked at her.

"What information?"

She looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

"Information about what happened before your father died."

I froze.

"My father?"

Adrian nodded.

"This is bigger than my disappearance."

I stared at the photograph.

Everything I knew about my family was collapsing.

My father.

My brother.

My wife.

My closest friend.

All connected by secrets.

I turned toward Claire.

"You said you found this recording."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Where exactly?"

She hesitated.

"Daniel's private office."

"Why were you there?"

Her expression changed.

"I was looking for evidence."

"Against Daniel?"

She nodded.

"Because I knew something was wrong."

I studied her.

"And you didn't think I deserved to know?"

She looked down.

"I was afraid."

That answer bothered me.

Because everyone was afraid.

Everyone except me.

And maybe that was the problem.

I had spent years believing fear protected me.

Maybe it had only made people hide things from me.

Suddenly, the security alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

The mansion went silent.

Then the security panel flashed.

Motion detected.

Lower level.

I looked at the screen.

"Who is in the house?"

Nobody answered.

I grabbed my phone.

No signal.

That was impossible.

My security system had multiple backups.

Someone had disabled them.

Adrian looked at me.

"He's here."

I looked at him.

"Daniel?"

He nodded.

"We need to leave."

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

I walked toward the stairs.

"Elias."

Grace grabbed my arm.

"Please."

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

For a moment, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who had cried alone.

The woman who had been afraid.

But I also saw the secret she kept from me.

"I need answers."

Then I walked downstairs.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

My security team should have been everywhere.

But nobody appeared.

That meant whoever entered had planned this.

I reached the living room.

Nothing.

No movement.

No sound.

Then I noticed something.

The front door was open.

Slowly.

I approached.

Outside was a black car.

Empty.

On the ground beside it was an envelope.

I picked it up.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Inside was a single photograph.

I looked at it.

And my heart stopped.

It was a picture of me.

Taken earlier that night.

From inside my own bedroom.

From the exact angle beneath the bed.

Someone had been there.

Someone had been watching me hide.

I flipped the photo over.

A message was written on the back.

"You still don't know what your wife did."

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Nobody.

Then my phone finally received a signal.

One message appeared.

From Daniel.

Only five words.

"Come alone. Bring Adrian."

May you like

I looked toward the hallway.

Because behind me, the basement door slowly opened.
