Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Locked Door

The door handle stopped moving.

For one second, nobody breathed.

Daniel stood beside me with his hand near the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.

Clara pulled Lily behind her.

I stared at the office entrance.

Someone knew we were here.

Someone knew what we had found.

And someone was standing on the other side of the door.

"Adrian..."

The voice came again.

Soft.

Almost familiar.

My entire body went still.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from recently.

From years ago.

Before Marcus died.

Before Richard disappeared.

Before everyone I trusted started lying.

Daniel looked at me.

"You know that voice."

I didn't answer.

The door slowly opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She wasn't holding a weapon.

She wasn't afraid.

She walked into the room like she belonged there.

Her eyes moved across everyone.

First Daniel.

Then Clara.

Then Lily.

Finally, me.

"You're alive," I whispered.

The woman looked at me sadly.

"I could say the same thing about you."

My fingers tightened.

Because the person standing in front of me was the last person I expected to see.

Victoria Hale.

My former financial advisor.

The woman who had handled every major investment in my empire.

The woman who knew every account.

Every company.

Every secret.

The woman who disappeared two weeks after Marcus died.

Everyone believed she ran away.

Everyone believed she betrayed us.

But nobody knew she had been watching from the shadows.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

Victoria looked at the files on the desk.

"You finally found it."

Her words confirmed something.

She knew.

She had always known.

Daniel moved forward.

"Victoria, you shouldn't be here."

She smiled slightly.

"Neither should you, Daniel."

The tension between them was immediate.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

History.

"You two know each other," I said.

Neither answered.

That was enough.

I picked up the file with Richard's photograph.

"Start talking."

Victoria looked at the picture.

Then at me.

"Your brother wasn't the traitor."

I laughed quietly.

"That's what everyone keeps saying."

"Because it's true."

"Then why did everyone let me believe he was dead?"

Her expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"Because Richard wanted you to believe it."

The room went silent.

My own brother wanted me to think he was dead.

The idea felt impossible.

"Why?"

Victoria walked toward the desk.

"Because he discovered someone was planning to take everything from you."

I looked at the files.

"Who?"

Victoria didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she picked up Marcus's letter.

She looked at the handwriting.

"He knew he was running out of time."

"You were with him?"

She nodded.

"The night before he died."

My eyes narrowed.

"Everyone said Marcus was alone."

"Everyone was wrong."

I stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Victoria looked at Daniel.

Then Clara.

Then Lily.

Like she was making sure everyone was ready to hear the truth.

"Marcus discovered that someone inside your organization was moving money through hidden accounts."

I listened.

"He followed the money."

"To where?"

Victoria looked at me.

"To someone you would never suspect."

My jaw tightened.

"Who?"

Before she could answer, the mansion lights suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Lily gasped.

Daniel immediately moved toward her.

I heard footsteps outside.

Not one person.

Several.

Someone had surrounded the office.

Victoria whispered:

"They found us."

I reached for the emergency light switch.

Nothing happened.

The backup system had been disabled.

That was impossible.

Only three people knew how to disable it.

Me.

Daniel.

And the person who designed my security system.

The person who had built every protection around my mansion.

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

He understood the same thing I did.

Someone had access.

Someone inside.

The office door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Someone was trying to force it open.

Clara held Lily tightly.

"Adrian, we have to leave."

"Not yet."

I looked at Victoria.

"You came here because you knew this would happen."

She didn't deny it.

"I came here because Marcus left something for you."

"What?"

She reached into her coat.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She removed a small key.

An old metal key.

Attached to it was a tag.

A single word was written on it.

"Basement."

My eyes moved toward the floor.

My mansion had a basement.

But not one that appeared on any official records.

A place built before I bought the property.

A place even my employees didn't know existed.

Marcus knew about it.

And apparently, he had hidden something there.

The door shook again.

Harder.

Wood cracked.

Daniel looked at me.

"We don't have much time."

I grabbed the key.

"Where is the entrance?"

Victoria pointed behind Marcus's old bookshelf.

"There."

I stared at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because I helped him build it."

Another shock.

Another piece of a puzzle I didn't know existed.

The bookshelf moved when Daniel pushed against it.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Cold air rushed out.

Dark.

Silent.

Waiting.

Lily looked inside.

"My mom knew about this place."

I turned.

"What?"

Clara looked terrified.

"I didn't want you to find out this way."

"Find out what?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"The basement wasn't built to hide things from enemies."

She paused.

"It was built to hide things from you."

The words hit me harder than any weapon.

Before I could ask another question, the office door exploded open.

Men rushed inside.

Daniel fired first.

Everyone moved.

Victoria grabbed Clara and Lily.

I ran toward the hidden passage.

Behind us, someone shouted my name.

Not Adrian.

Not Mr. Vale.

Something else.

A name only one person had ever called me.

A name from my childhood.

I stopped.

Because the voice belonged to someone who should have been dead for ten years.

May you like

I turned toward the doorway.

And standing there, surrounded by armed men, was my brother Richard.
