Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Who Stopped the Mafia Boss

A little girl grabbed my sleeve outside the mansion and whispered: "Don’t leave. You need to see what’s upstairs."
When Mafia boss Adrian Vale canceled his million-dollar meeting, he discovered a locked black envelope carried by a man inside his own home.
Four words were scratched on the back: "Six years. Still hidden."
Adrian realized this wasn't a random secret.
The little girl's fingers were trembling around my sleeve as my driver held the car door open.
I had already checked my watch twice.
The meeting in downtown Manhattan was worth more than most people earned in a lifetime. Three companies were waiting for my signature. My lawyers were waiting. My enemies were waiting.
Everyone waited for Adrian Vale.
No one expected me to stop because of an eight-year-old girl wearing a simple black-and-white maid uniform.
"Mr. Vale," she whispered again, looking toward the mansion doors, "you can't go."
I looked down at her.
Her name was Lily Bennett.
Her mother, Clara, had worked as a maid in my mansion for almost seven years. She was quiet, loyal, and never caused problems. Lily was the same way.
Except today, she looked terrified.
"Why?" I asked.
The little girl glanced around before stepping closer.
"Because someone inside is taking something that belongs to you."
My driver looked uncomfortable.
He had worked for me for ten years. He knew I didn't like surprises.
Especially not from children.
"Lily," I said calmly, "what are you talking about?"
She swallowed.
"My mom told me never to say anything. But she disappeared after she found it."
The words changed the air around us.
I studied her face carefully.
Children could misunderstand things.
They could imagine things.
But fear like that was difficult to fake.
"What did your mother find?"
Lily looked toward the second floor windows.
"The envelope."
My expression changed slightly.
"What envelope?"
She grabbed my hand.
"The one everyone thinks is gone."
For six years, I had lived with one unanswered question.
Six years earlier, my closest friend and business partner, Marcus Reed, had died in what police called an accident.
Before his death, Marcus had been preparing documents that could expose a betrayal inside my organization.
An envelope containing those documents disappeared the same night.
Everyone told me it was destroyed.
Everyone told me I should move on.
I never believed them.
But I never found proof.
Until now.
I closed the car door.
My driver immediately stepped forward.
"Sir?"
"Cancel the meeting."
His eyes widened.
"The one today?"
"All of it."
I turned toward Lily.
"Show me."
The little girl nodded.
We walked back into the mansion.
The place I had considered my safest location suddenly felt different.
Every hallway.
Every locked door.
Every person who worked for me.
Everything looked suspicious.
Lily moved quickly through the marble hallway.
She knew exactly where she was going.
That bothered me more than anything.
A child should not know the hidden corners of my home.
We reached the grand staircase.
She stopped.
"Up there."
I looked toward the second floor.
"What is upstairs?"
She lowered her voice.
"The room nobody uses."
I followed her.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Then I heard it.
A slow dragging sound.
A shoe moving across the floor.
Someone was there.
I raised my hand, telling Lily to stay behind me.
The footsteps stopped.
A shadow moved near the end of the hallway.
A man holding something black stepped into view.
An envelope.
My eyes narrowed.
The same type of envelope I had searched for six years.
The man froze when he saw me.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then he ran.
I followed.
He reached the locked office door.
He pulled the handle.
Nothing happened.
Because the door was locked.
From the inside.
May you like
He looked back at me with panic in his eyes.
And then the lights inside the office turned on.
