Chapter 2 - The Room That Was Never Supposed to Open

The lights inside the locked office flickered once.
Then they stayed on.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The man holding the black envelope stood frozen near the door, his hand still wrapped around the handle.
Lily stood behind me, gripping the edge of my jacket.
My instincts told me one thing.
Someone was inside that room.
Someone who had been waiting.
I slowly stepped forward.
"Who is in there?"
The man in front of me didn't answer.
That was the first mistake.
People who were innocent usually explained.
People who were afraid usually lied.
But people who knew they were caught stayed silent.
I had spent half my life learning the difference.
"Turn around," I said.
The man slowly faced me.
I recognized him immediately.
Daniel Cross.
My family's head of security.
The man who had protected my mansion for eight years.
The man who knew every camera angle, every entrance, every hidden passage.
The one person I trusted to keep danger outside my walls.
And now he was standing inside them.
Holding the one thing I had spent six years trying to find.
The envelope.
"Daniel," I said quietly.
His face lost color.
"Mr. Vale..."
"Explain."
He looked at Lily.
That small movement told me everything.
He wasn't worried about himself.
He was worried that she knew.
"What is she doing here?" Daniel asked.
I took another step closer.
"Answer my question."
His fingers tightened around the envelope.
"I can explain."
"Then explain."
Daniel looked toward the locked office door.
For a moment, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not the fear of losing his job.
Not the fear of disappointing me.
Real fear.
Someone had scared Daniel Cross.
Someone powerful enough that even my head of security was afraid.
"Lily," I said without looking away from him, "go downstairs."
The little girl shook her head.
"No."
I turned slightly.
"Lily."
"My mom told me if you ever found the envelope, I had to stay."
Those words hit harder than I expected.
"Your mother said that?"
She nodded.
"Before she disappeared."
The hallway became colder.
I looked at Daniel.
"You knew about Clara."
His eyes dropped.
That was another answer.
I had known something was wrong six years ago.
Clara Bennett had worked quietly in my house.
She had never stolen anything.
Never caused problems.
Never broken a rule.
Then one night, she vanished.
The official story was that she quit.
I never believed it.
But I had no proof.
Until now.
"What happened to her?" I asked.
Daniel remained silent.
I stepped closer.
"What happened to my maid?"
His voice finally came out.
"She found something she shouldn't have."
"What?"
He looked at the envelope.
"That."
I stared at the black paper.
Six years.
Six years of unanswered questions.
Six years of people telling me I was chasing a ghost.
And now the ghost was standing in my hallway.
"Give it to me."
Daniel didn't move.
"Mr. Vale..."
"Give. It. To. Me."
His hand slowly moved forward.
But before he could place it in mine, the office door behind him opened.
Everyone stopped.
A woman stepped out.
My heart almost stopped.
Because I knew her.
Not because I had seen her recently.
Because I had spent six years believing I would never see her again.
"Adrian..."
The voice was older.
Weaker.
But familiar.
Lily gasped.
I stared into the room.
"That's impossible."
The woman standing there looked at me with tears in her eyes.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face had changed.
But I knew those eyes.
I knew that voice.
It was Clara Bennett.
The woman everyone said had disappeared.
The woman who was supposed to have left my life forever.
The woman who had been connected to the missing envelope.
She looked at Lily first.
Then at me.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
My entire body went still.
I had prepared myself for enemies.
For betrayal.
For lies.
I had never prepared myself for someone I thought was gone.
"Where have you been?" I asked.
Clara looked down.
"I was hiding."
"From who?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Daniel.
That was when I understood.
Daniel wasn't the person she was afraid of.
He was protecting her.
But why?
I walked into the office.
The room was exactly as I remembered it.
A place I had stopped using after Marcus died.
His old desk remained in the corner.
His books were still arranged on the shelves.
Even the photograph of us from years ago was still there.
Except one thing had changed.
The wall behind the desk.
There was a hidden compartment.
And inside it were dozens of files.
My name was written on every single one.
I looked at Clara.
"What is this?"
She wiped her tears.
"Everything Marcus discovered before he died."
My chest tightened.
Marcus.
The name nobody had spoken in years.
The man who had built my empire beside me.
The man who had died with secrets in his hands.
I opened the first file.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Bank records.
Names.
People I knew.
People I trusted.
The first page had a date.
Six years ago.
The night Marcus died.
I turned another page.
Then another.
Every document pointed toward the same truth.
Someone inside my organization had planned everything.
Someone had framed Marcus.
Someone had made sure the evidence disappeared.
Someone had spent years making sure I never found the truth.
"Why didn't you come to me?" I asked Clara.
She looked at Lily.
"Because they were watching us."
"Who?"
Her lips trembled.
"Your closest people."
The words were barely audible.
But they cut deeper than any threat.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
"You knew."
He nodded slowly.
"I knew enough to understand you couldn't trust anyone."
"Not even you?"
His silence was painful.
Then Clara reached for another folder.
"This is the reason I stayed hidden."
She placed it on the desk.
The folder was older than the others.
Different.
On the front was one name.
A name I had not heard in six years.
Marcus Reed.
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The ink was faded.
But the handwriting was unmistakable.
Marcus had written it.
The first line made my blood run cold.
"Adrian, if you are reading this, then the person who betrayed me is still close to you."
I stopped breathing.
Clara watched my reaction.
I continued.
The next sentence was only seven words.
Seven words that changed everything.
"Do not trust the man beside you."
Slowly, I looked up.
Daniel was standing next to me.
And his face had gone completely pale.
Then his phone rang.
May you like
He looked at the screen.
And the name appearing on it was one I never expected to see again.
