Chapter 7 - The Marriage That Became Real

I stared at the message on my phone.

"Ask Cesare why he killed me."

My father's words.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who had been hiding in the shadows of my entire life.

Adrian Bellante.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Cesare looked at my phone.

Then he looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Pain.

"Elena..."

I stepped back.

"Tell me."

He didn't answer.

My heart sank.

Because after everything I had learned, there was still one question that remained.

The one question that could destroy everything.

"Did you kill him?"

The mansion became completely silent.

My mother closed her eyes.

Sofia looked away.

Everyone knew the answer mattered.

Cesare took a slow breath.

"No."

The answer came quietly.

But it wasn't enough.

"Then explain."

He nodded.

"I will."

For the first time since I met him, Cesare Bellante stopped trying to protect me from the truth.

He told me everything.

Fifteen years earlier, Adrian Bellante had discovered that my mother had uncovered his plans.

He had been using the Bellante name to build a criminal empire outside the family's control.

He wasn't protecting the family.

He was destroying it.

My mother had found documents proving what he had done.

Names.

Accounts.

Evidence.

Everything.

And she knew if Adrian discovered the truth, he would come after her.

And after me.

"So you helped her disappear," I whispered.

Cesare nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

His eyes met mine.

"Because she asked me to save her daughter."

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

"I thought I would come back for you," she said.

"But Adrian found out."

Her voice broke.

"He wanted Elena gone."

I felt cold.

"My own father wanted me dead."

My mother looked at me.

"He didn't see you as his daughter."

A tear fell down her face.

"He saw you as the one thing he couldn't control."

I looked at Cesare.

"And you?"

He didn't hesitate.

"I saw you as the person I promised to protect."

The words were simple.

But after everything we had been through, they meant more than any grand confession.

Before I could respond, the video screen in the hallway turned on again.

Adrian appeared.

Still smiling.

"You always were predictable, Cesare."

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked older now.

But his eyes were the same.

Cold.

Empty.

"You gathered them all together."

Cesare stepped forward.

"You lost."

Adrian laughed.

"No."

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Photos.

Records.

Evidence.

Then Adrian smiled.

"I spent fifteen years preparing for this moment."

My mother stepped forward.

"Adrian."

His expression changed when he saw her.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

"You should have stayed dead."

My blood ran cold.

Cesare looked at me.

"Stay here."

But I shook my head.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped forward.

"He's been controlling my life since before I understood anything."

I looked at the screen.

"I'm done hiding."

Adrian smiled.

"You sound like your mother."

"That's because she raised me."

The words surprised him.

And for the first time, I saw him lose control.

Because Adrian understood something.

He had spent fifteen years believing he owned my story.

But he didn't.

I did.

The confrontation ended before sunrise.

Cesare's security team had already traced the signal.

The old estate where Adrian was hiding was surrounded.

The evidence my mother had protected for years was finally released.

The truth about Adrian Bellante became public.

The powerful people who had helped him disappeared one by one.

The Bellante family survived.

But not because of power.

Because the truth finally came out.

Adrian was arrested.

And for the first time in fifteen years, my family could breathe.

Weeks passed.

The mansion changed.

It no longer felt like a place full of secrets.

My mother stayed.

At first, it was difficult.

We had fifteen years to make up for.

Fifteen birthdays.

Fifteen holidays.

Fifteen years of memories we couldn't get back.

But we tried.

Slowly.

One day at a time.

She told me stories about my childhood.

She showed me pictures she had hidden.

She apologized more times than I could count.

And eventually, I stopped seeing her as the woman who left.

I started seeing her as the woman who sacrificed everything to save me.

Sofia also stayed.

She and Cesare rebuilt their relationship.

The pain between them didn't disappear overnight.

But forgiveness started where honesty finally existed.

And Cesare...

Cesare was different.

The world still feared him.

People still whispered his name.

But I knew the man behind it.

The man who stayed awake all night when I had nightmares.

The man who learned how to cook because I hated eating alone.

The man who apologized when he was wrong.

The man who looked at me like I was not a responsibility.

Like I was a choice.

One evening, months after everything ended, I found him standing in the garden.

The same place where our wedding photographs had been taken.

I walked toward him.

"You know something?"

He turned.

"What?"

"When we got married, I thought I was temporary."

His expression softened.

"I know."

"I thought I was just part of a contract."

Cesare looked down.

"That was my mistake."

I smiled slightly.

"You know what the strange part is?"

"What?"

"You were the one person who never treated me like a contract."

He looked at me.

"I tried."

I laughed.

"You're terrible at pretending."

For the first time, I saw him smile.

Not the small polite expression he used in public.

A real smile.

The kind nobody else got to see.

He reached for my hand.

The same hand he held on our wedding day.

But this time, there was no arrangement.

No secret agreement.

No fear.

Just us.

"I should have told you the truth from the beginning."

"Yes."

"I should have trusted you."

"Yes."

He nodded.

"I am sorry."

I looked at him.

And I believed him.

Because love was not about finding someone without scars.

It was about finding someone who stayed while you healed.

A year later, we renewed our vows.

Not in a room filled with powerful people.

Not because of a family agreement.

Not because someone needed protection.

Just because we wanted to.

My mother sat in the front row.

Sofia stood beside her.

The people who once believed our marriage was fake watched as Cesare took my hand again.

This time, everyone knew the truth.

He hadn't bought a wife.

He had found a family.

When he looked at me, he whispered:

"Nothing was ever fake."

I smiled.

"Not even the beginning?"

He shook his head.

"Especially not the beginning."

Years earlier, I thought I was walking into a marriage where I would never belong.

I thought I was a temporary solution to a powerful man's problem.

But I was wrong.

I wasn't chosen because I was useful.

I wasn't protected because I was weak.

May you like

I was loved because I was me.

And the man everyone feared became the man who gave me the safest place I had ever known.
